Foul play suspected in Maine girl's disappearance (AP)

PORTLAND, Maine ? Crime scene investigators returned to the central Maine home from which a 20-month-old girl disappeared as police announced that they believe foul play was involved.

Two weeks after Ayla Reynolds went missing, evidence technicians from Massachusetts joined Maine State Police crime scene investigators on Friday at the Waterville home where the girl was last seen by her father. The home 75 miles north of Portland now sits empty, surrounded by yellow crime scene tape.

Hours later, Waterville police Chief Joseph Massey announced Friday night that the case "has evolved from the search for a missing child to a criminal investigation."

In a statement, the chief said the conclusion was based on evidence that has been gathered over the past two weeks, but he didn't elaborate. He said state police would take the lead on the investigation.

"All of our efforts continue to locate Ayla. Although this is beginning the third week, we remain hopeful," Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said.

Ayla's father, Justin DiPietro, told police he last saw her when he put her to bed the night of Dec. 16. He reported her missing when she was nowhere to be found the following morning.

Before she vanished, Ayla was wearing green polka dot pajamas with the words "Daddy's Princess" on them and had a soft cast on her broken left arm. Extensive searches of woods, waterways, fields and private properties around Waterville, a city of 16,000 residents, have failed to turn up anything.

The day after Christmas, investigators announced a $30,000 reward, the largest ever for a missing person case in Maine, for information leading to Ayla's whereabouts.

McCausland on Friday declined to discuss whether any of the 300-plus leads had borne fruit for investigators. He also declined to talk about suspects or evidence that has been gathered. He said DiPietro and Ayla's mother, Trista Reynolds, of Portland, were cooperating with investigators.

There were news reports Friday that two cars seized from the Waterville home were returned to DiPietro and an unidentified woman. McCausland declined to confirm those reports.

Investigators put up crime scene tape at the father's home last week. Outside the home, teddy bears and stuffed animals were piled at a makeshift shrine.

Ayla was placed in her father's care while her mother was in a substance abuse rehabilitation program, which she completed.

Trista Reynolds, making an appeal on national television on Thursday, said that she had questions for DiPietro but that he had not returned her calls since their daughter went missing. She previously raised concerns about Ayla's treatment while in her father's care after the girl broke her arm, an incident described by police as an accident. She had no further comment Friday night, her sister said.

DiPietro couldn't be reached for comment. The Associated Press has been unable to find a telephone listing for him, and the house where he stayed is now empty.

A few days before Christmas, DiPietro, addressing the public for the first time, said in a statement he had "no idea what happened to Ayla or who is responsible." Later, in another statement, he said, "I would never do anything to hurt my child."

Former FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt said Friday that the odds of finding a child lessen if he or she isn't found within the first day or two of disappearing. But he said there's always reason for optimism, noting that there are even rare cases of missing children who turn up years later in someone's care.

"If you don't get this child back real quickly, you know that it gets harder and harder," he said. "But you can't give up hope."

Scott Bernstein, founder of Child Recovery International, a New York City-based organization that helps find missing children, agreed the first hours of an investigation are key in tracking down missing children as young as Ayla. Although the situation looks bleak, there's still room for hope, he said.

"One percent hope ? but I'll go for that 1 percent hope," he said.

After Ayla went missing, law enforcement officials likely divided their investigation into two parts, one team looking at people with access to her, such as relatives and family friends, and another group looking at the potential for an abduction by an outsider or stranger, Van Zandt said. Under both scenarios, he said, the odds are that the person who took Ayla knew something about her or her family.

Strangers' abductions of children do occur, but they're rare, accounting for only 105 to 115 children out of 750,000 to 900,000 missing-persons cases each year in the United States, Van Zandt said.

Van Zandt, who has worked similar cases, said Ayla's disappearance, which once had more than 80 searchers and law enforcement officers involved, has been difficult for law enforcers as well as for distraught family members.

"As an FBI agent working these cases, you never turn off the emotional porch light," he said. "You always leave on the light with the hope that the child will come home again."

Catherine Ann "Kate" Bosworth (born January 2, 1983) is an American actress. Bosworth starred in the television series Young Americans, in which she played Bella Banks. She became known with a leading role in 2002's Blue Crush. The following year, Bosworth played the teenage girlfriend of porn star John Holmes in Wonderland opposite Val Kilmer. In 2004, she portrayed Sandra Dee in Kevin Spacey's Beyond the Sea. Bosworth since appeared in several notable films, including Superman Returns (2006), where she played Lois Lane, and 2008's blackjack drama film 21. In 2008, she became both Calvin Klein Jeans newest model and spokeswoman for Coach newest luxury bags.

Early life

Bosworth was born January 2, 1983 in Los Angeles, California, the only child of Patricia (n?e Potter), a homemaker, and Harold Bosworth, a former executive for Talbots. After leaving San Francisco at the age of six, Bosworth's family frequently moved around the country because of her father's job. She grew up mainly on the East Coast, spending the rest of her youth in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Bosworth has always been interested in a professional career as a competitive horse racer and, by the age of fourteen, she was a champion equestrian. While attending Cohasset High School from which she graduated in 2001, Bosworth learned to speak French and was a member of the National Honor Society; she also played varsity soccer and lacrosse.

Bosworth, born with heterochromia iridum, has a hazel eye and a blue eye.

Career

Early work

Bosworth's first film role came after an open casting call in New York for the supporting part of Judith in the 1998 film, The Horse Whisperer. The film's producers needed someone who was already an experienced horse rider, leading to Bosworth's successful audition for the role. The film received positive reception from film critics. In 2000, she starred in the television series drama Young Americans, in which she played Bella Banks, a well-adjusted small town girl working at a gas station near an elite prep school. The series, however, was canceled. That same year, she had a small part in the film Remember the Titans. In 2001, Bosworth moved to Los Angeles in hopes of obtaining easier access to auditions and better film parts.

Critical success

The breakthrough role in Bosworth's career came in the 2002 surfing movie Blue Crush, which she prepared for by working out with two separate trainers six hours a day for months in order to add fifteen pounds of muscle to her frame. In his review of the film, Rolling Stone'sPeter Travers wrote: "Bosworth is a star in the making, but even she can't outshine the surfing footage, which is flat-out spectacular." The film received positive reviews and grossed $40?million at the United States box office. Following the success of Blue Crush, Bosworth took on roles in the indie films The Rules of Attraction (2002), and a darker turn in Wonderland (2003) opposite Val Kilmer, where she played the teenage girlfriend of porn star John Holmes.

In 2004, she played the lead role in Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!, opposite Topher Grace. The film was critically and financially unsuccessful. Also in 2004, Bosworth depicted actress Sandra Dee in Beyond the Sea. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle, in review of the film, commented that Kevin Spacey, who played actor Bobby Darin, and Bosworth's courting is "unsettling". The movie received mixed reception, and was a box office disappointment. The following year, Bosworth portrayed Chali, a Hare Krishna, in the film adaptation of Myla Goldberg's novel Bee Season (2005), about a dysfunctional Jewish family. She has appeared in several Revlon ads and ranked as number 60 in FHM's "100 Sexiest Women in the World 2005" list. For two years running, she has placed on the Maxim Hot 100 List ? number 38 in 2005 and number 8 in 2006.

Current projects

She has a jewelry line designed with friend and celebrity stylist, Cher Coulter, called JewelMint, which launched in October 2010. JewelMint, the first vertical of MySpace co-founder, Josh Berman, and Diego Berdakin?s social commerce company, BeachMint, is a new jewelry site with designs exclusively by Coulter and Bosworth. The two paired with the company to create a line of affordable fashion jewelry. The premise of the site is that members receive a new piece of jewelry each month out of the personalized choices recommended to them by their JewelMint Style Quiz results. JewelMint has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, InStyle magazine, Teen Vogue, C Magazine, People StyleWatch, InTouch Weekly, "Lucky Magazine" and OK! magazine. In the summer of 2011, Bosworth made her singing debut with a television jingle for Cotton's Fabric of our Lives campaign (the song she performs is downloadable on the Cotton site).

Worldwide recognition

After going through many screen tests and competing with other actresses for the role, she was cast as reporter Lois Lane in Bryan Singer's superhero film Superman Returns (2006). She starred along with her Beyond the Sea co-star Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor, as well as newcomer Brandon Routh as Superman. The film was a box office success and received mostly positive reviews. Bosworth's performance however, was not well-received among critics; Anthony Lane of The New Yorker, in his review of the film noted, "The new Lois Lane, Kate Bosworth, is not a patch on Margot Kidder, or, for that matter, on Teri Hatcher, in the TV series." San Francisco Chronicle film critic Mick LaSalle felt that Bosworth, at 22-years-old, was too young to portray Lois Lane, and the climax did not "match the potential of the tiring 154 minute long film". Although Bosworth's performance was ambivalently received, she herself loved the experience of working on the movie. As she told Teen Vogue in August 2006, "You know how you have an experience, a time in your life when you feel you've come into your own? When you grow up a bit, and think, Now I get it? [...] That's how I feel. I feel a little bit more complete." Superman Returns was a commercial and critical success. The movie grossed $52?million during its opening weekend in North America and went on to earn $391?million worldwide.

Bosworth starred in the psychological drama called The Girl in the Park with Sigourney Weaver, Alessandro Nivola and Keri Russell. She plays Louise, a troubled young girl taken under Weaver's character's wing. The Girl in the Park was written and directed by Pulitzer Prize winner David Auburn in his directorial debut. The film premiered at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival, it has since been picked up by The Weinstein Company. Alissa Simon of Variety wrote that Bosworth "tries her best, but her character's too extremely drawn." Bosworth also filmed 21, an adaptation of the book Bringing Down the House, in early 2007 in Boston, Massachusetts and Las Vegas, Nevada. This film reunites her with co-star Kevin Spacey and director Robert Luketic. 21 garnered mixed reviews, with Joanne Kaufman of the Wall Street Journal concluding, "Very little adds up in 21."

Her next film is the epic The Warrior's Way which she shot in New Zealand alongside Korean star Jang Dong-gun and Geoffrey Rush. She has also optioned the film rights to Catherine Hanrahan's novel Lost Girls and Love Hotels, about a young woman looking to escape in Tokyo's seedy nightlife. She will produce the project alongside filmmaker Nadia Connors. She has said about her roles, "I just don't do comfort zones." In January 2008, Bosworth was named the new face for Calvin Klein Jeans and will be featured in the Calvin Klein Jeans campaign. She also takes on the role of spokesperson for American luxury bag brand Coach in Asia.

Personal life

Bosworth was accepted to Princeton University in late 2000, but because of continual deferral of her attendance, her acceptance was later revoked. She is a member of the Appalachia Service Project. In late 2002, she began dating actor Orlando Bloom. The two met outside a coffee shop and were introduced to each other by a friend, before meeting again at the premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Bosworth and Bloom separated in 2006. Bosworth dated British model James Rousseau beginning September 2006 after meeting him at a Marc Jacobs after party. An aspiring musician, Rousseau wrote the song "To Make You Mine" for her.

Bosworth has previously dated actor Alexander Skarsg?rd.

Dear Escalator? Latest Kim Jong-il shrine is an escalator (video)

North Koreans are mourning the death of Kim Jong-il, but the oddest sign of the cult of personality is a shrine at a supermarket escalator.

The North Korean government propaganda machine is delivering a steady diet of images of North Koreans mourning the death of Kim Jong-il

We've seen North Koreans wailing, sobbing, and quietly weeping in public plazas, schools, and factories. And, of course, there are the predictable long lines of people waiting to pay their respects at the Dear Leader's see-through coffin on display in Pyongyang.

But perhaps the most unusual expression of the North Korean cult of personality is a "shrine" at a supermarket escalator.

    Yes, really.

The North Korean government media released a still photo of what is believed to have been Kim Jong-il?s last public appearance before he died on Saturday. He's riding an escalator into a new supermarket in Pyongyang. The photo is undated, but the Korean Central News Agency reported separately that Kim had visited a supermarket on Dec. 15, 2011 ? two days before his reported death.

North Korean mourners are now gathering at the escalator to pay their respects (video below).

?I can?t imagine how happy it would make us and our fellow citizens if he could ride on this escalator again,? said one North Korean woman, amid a group of mourners, weeping around the moving staircase, according to Euronews story. ?I still feel that he is alive, with his bright smile. I can also hear his voice.?

Britian's Daily Mail was so amused by the photo that they had a photo caption contest for readers.Their own headline: "Kim Jong II clearly didn't enjoy grocery shopping ..."

But The Guardian of London took a more revealing look at who else is shown in the photo riding the escalator with Kim Jong-il. The image offers a sneak preview of the coming North Korean power players.

"Standing behind him, and in front of the officials, are his son [Kim Jong-un] and two people who could determine the course of the country's leadership in these delicate, early days of transition.

The woman is Kim Kyong-hui, Kim Jong-il's younger sister and a regular companion in the last years of his life. Behind them is her husband Jang Song-thaek, the most powerful adviser in the new leadership, who is expected to guide the "young general" during his formative days in power."

Egyptian Women Get Another Win with 'Virginity Test' Ban (The Atlantic Wire)

Woman today in Egypt won a right that they obviously should have had all along after an Egyptian court banned the administration of "virginity tests" on female prisoners, reports MSNBC and CNN. The officially given reason why?the government needs to know whether or not its detainees have had sex is beyond our comprehension, ostensively to "safeguard against the women accusing authorities of sexual assault," according to CNN. But the real motive seems obvious to us, and to Samira?Ibrahim, a 25-year-old Egyptian?pictured to the right above who sued the government after she was forced to have a virginity test after being arrested in March: "degrade the protesters."?

Today, though, we're happy with the refreshing feminist voice heard in the new unrest in Egyptian, a region where women often don't have much of a chance to make themselves heard. Last week thousands of Egyptian women took to the streets?after the now-famous blue-bra-woman beating. Consider this another win for Egyptian women.

Deep Frog Voice Signals His Chromosome Number

    60-Second Science60-Second Science | Evolution

Two related frog species differ by chromosome number, which deepened one species' calls and tells the females who's who.

    More 60-Second Science

The eastern grey tree frog [sound] looks exactly like the closely related Cope?s grey tree frog [sound]. The big difference between the two species is beneath the surface?the eastern has twice the number of chromosomes as does the Cope?s.

Having more sets of chromosomes makes the cells of the eastern frog larger than the cells found in the Cope?s. And those bigger cells makes the eastern?s song just a little deeper.

Now University of Missouri researcher Carl Gerhardt and his student Mitch Tucker have determined that the slight difference in the calls?here?s the eastern again [sound] and here?s the Cope?s [sound]?is how the females know which species? males to buddy up with: the ones with the same chromosome number that they have. The work is in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B-Biological Sciences. [Mitch A. Tucker and H.C. Gerhardt, Parallel changes in mate-attracting calls and female preferences in autotriploid tree frogs]

Speciation is often caused by a geographic barrier that keeps populations from mating. But the tree frog situation may be a rare case in which chromosome duplication, and its subsequent effects, presented a reproductive barrier. As in humans, it comes down to whether he calls.

    ?Steve Mirsky

Mexican army: Ally's arrest is blow to 'El Chapo' (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexican authorities said Monday that they had dealt a blow to the country's most powerful drug cartel with the capture of a top lieutenant ? but didn't say if they were any closer to capturing the gang's elusive leader.

Felipe Cabrera Sarabia, known as "The Engineer," allegedly ran operations for the Sinaloa drug cartel, Mexico's most powerful, in the northern state of Durango and in part of the northern state of Chihuahua, Chief Army spokesman Gen. Ricardo Trevilla told a news conference. Cabrera, wearing a bulletproof vest, was paraded before the news media in what has become a common practice for law enforcement authorities following major arrests.

Many experts and law-enforcement officials believe the reputed leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, has been hiding in the mountains of Durango. Authorities say Guzman is Mexico's top drug lord, while Forbes magazine has included him on its list of the world's richest men, reportedly worth more than $1 billion. He has eluded authorities since his 2001 escape from prison in a laundry truck, and has a $7 million bounty on his head.

Trevilla offered no information about the hunt for Guzman. He only said that Cabrera's capture "will affect the structure and leadership of the Sinaloa cartel."

At the time of Cabrera's arrest, army special forces also seized documents and computer equipment, he said.

Cabrera was nabbed without a shot being fired Friday in the capital of Sinaloa state, headquarters of the cartel, army officials first announced Sunday night.

He will be held for at least 40 days on suspicion of participating in organized crime and drug trafficking. Mexican law allows organized-crime suspects to be held that long before prosecutors bring formal charges before a judge.

Trevilla said Cabrera and three of his brothers began as marijuana growers and that Cabrera rose through the Sinaloa ranks by using violence against his rivals.

In recent months, Cabrera waged war against a rival faction of the Sinaloa cartel known as the "Ms", leading to a surge in violence around Durango, he said.

Federal forces have found 14 mass graves containing 287 bodies in Durango state since April.

Separately, Mexican authorities said they had seized 21 metric tons of precursor chemicals used to make methamphetamine from a boat that stopped in the port of Manzanillo on the way from Peru to Guatemala.

It was the fourth large seizure this month of precursor chemicals headed for Guatemala.

It brings to more than 555 tons the amount of meth chemicals detected at Mexican ports in less than a month.

Authorities announced on Dec. 19 that they had found almost 100 metric tons of methylamine at the port of Lazaro Cardenas, and earlier said that 205 tons of the chemical had been found there over several days in early December. Mexico said Friday that it seized 229 metric tons of precursor chemicals at the port.

Experts familiar with meth production call it a huge amount of raw material, noting that under some production methods, precursor chemicals can yield about half their weight in uncut meth.

Device warns of catastrophic failure in lithium-ion batteries, robots celebrate

"Catastrophic lithium-ion battery failure" are five words Malfunctioning Eddie never wants to hear, and may not have to, thanks to a new sensor developed by the folks at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Despite the popularity of lithium-ion batteries in everything from consumer electronics to hybrid and electric vehicles, they have been associated with a phenomenon called "thermal runaway" -- known to cause overheating and potentially, fire. The newly developed device measures the electrical parameter of the cell, which is an indicator of whether the internal layer temperatures are getting too toasty. The best part? The warning comes before the heat can reach the surface and cause catastrophic failure, perhaps saving our electronics from a fate like the one in the video after the break.

Rosneft passes ExxonMobil to become world's top oil producer

Russia's state-run Rosneft oil company has become the world's largest producer after surpassing U.S. giant ExxonMobil, Voice of Russia radio reported Thursday (Dec. 22). The difference in their volumes of production is about 1 million tons, a small amount compared with their total production. Not only is the Russian company planning to preserve its position, it also intends to improve its key indicators.

Rosneft boasts oil production facilities in northern Russia, Siberia and the Far East, as well as seven refineries. Since 2004, it has been working at the world's largest oil deposits. In the past nine months, it has produced almost 90 million metric tons of oil, leaving the American company behind. At the same time, Rosneft has huge potential, said Natalya Shulyar, an expert in the fuel and energy sector.

"Considering that Russia is the world's largest oil producer, it's no surprise that Rosneft has reached the world's top position in production. The company is developing fast and is investing in new projects, that's why, it has good prospects," Shulyar said.

Rosneft projects include development of offshore oil fields and of the Vankor oil and gas field in East Siberia. The oil extracted from the Vankor field will fill the East Siberia-Pacific oil pipeline. Moreover, the company is involved in developing the Carabobo-2 oil field in Venezuela.

Despite its success in oil production the Russian company's overall production of hydrocarbons is half the amount extracted by its main competitor, ExxonMobil. Rosneft has set itself a target to improve its performance in other key areas by 2012 -- the production of natural gas and gas condensate. To this end, it needs to concentrate on expanding into new regions, an expert in energy issues, Sergei Pikin, told Voice of Russia in an interview.

"Unlike all the Russian oil and gas companies, ExxonMobil is a multinational company," Pikin said. "Consequently, the potential for Rosneft's development lies in the diversification of its regions of operation, which will help expand the resource base and bring it closer to major oil-consuming centers. This model would help the company to receive additional preferences."

Rosneft and ExxonMobil are partners as well as competitors. A few months ago, the companies agreed to conduct joint exploration of oil fields in the Arctic, while at the same time Russia will get an opportunity to extract oil from U.S. oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico and in Texas.

(AP) ? After a normal takeoff and a routine conversation with air traffic controllers about potential icing conditions, a small plane carrying two investment bankers and three others to Georgia headed off into the skies over New Jersey on Tuesday morning.

Minutes later, the high-performance Socata TBM-700 turboprop had spun out of control and crashed in a fireball on a busy highway, killing all five people aboard and narrowly avoiding dozens of cars and trucks speeding by.

Federal investigators were to resume searching the area for wreckage Wednesday morning. The debris was scattered over at least a half-mile, with one section found lodged in a tree a quarter-mile away. The crash closed both sides of busy Interstate 287 for hours on Tuesday.

The New York investment banking firm Greenhill & Co. said two of its managing directors, Jeffrey Buckalew, 45, and Rakesh Chawla, 36, as well as Buckalew's wife and two children, were on the plane. Buckalew was the registered owner of the single-engine plane and had a pilot's license.

National Transportation Safety Board officials said Tuesday the plane wasn't required to have a black box, which would have recorded flight data, but they said investigators would be searching for other memory devices, including GPS, collision avoidance systems or any device with a recordable chip that might yield more information.

The NTSB didn't say what role icing may have played in the crash. But an audio recording available online of the pilot speaking to air traffic controllers in the minutes before the crash offered some early clues.

The pilot was told to maintain an altitude of 10,000 feet as he headed southwest over northern New Jersey as a controller warned him about the conditions in the clouds above ? specifically accumulations of ice particles known as rime.

"There are reports of moderate rime. ... If it gets worse let me know and when center takes your handoff I'll climb you and maybe get you higher," one controller said.

The pilot responded: "We'll let you know what happens when we get in there. And, yeah, if we could go straight through it, that's no problem for us."

Seconds later, another controller is heard telling a different pilot about reports of severe icing at 14,000 feet.

Ice can form on airplanes when temperatures are near freezing and there is visible moisture, such as clouds or rain. The ice adds weight to an aircraft, and rough accumulations known as rime interrupt the flow of air over wings. In extreme cases, a plane can lose so much lift that it falls out of the sky.

Several eyewitnesses to Tuesday's crash described an out-of-control descent.

Will Keyser, who works in maintenance at the Spring Brook Country Club in Morristown, is used to hearing small planes fly over en route to nearby Morristown Memorial Airport. He was near the 13th hole Tuesday when he heard a loud plane overhead.

"It didn't sound quite right," Keyser said, recalling how he and his co-workers all looked up simultaneously. "We kind of lost it in the clouds, it came out of the clouds on the other side of the course, and it didn't look right, it didn't look like the pilot had control."

Keyser said the plane pitched back and forth, and for a moment he thought it was a stunt pilot.

"It was kind of rolling and making circles ? 'cause I've seen air shows before ? so I thought: 'Oh, OK;' but then he finally did a nosedive and we realized that was completely wrong."

Greenhill & Co. said Buckalew's wife, Corinne, and the couple's two children, Jackson and Meriwether, were traveling with him.

"The firm is in deep mourning over the tragic and untimely death of two of its esteemed colleagues and members of Jeff's family," the company said in a written statement.

A resident at Chawla's Manhattan apartment building remembered him as being constantly on the go, leaving early and getting home late. Arthur Yellin said that Chawla and his family were "wonderful people" and that the banker doted on his three children.

Authorities said a dog aboard the plane also was killed.

Storm, floods in south Philippines kill nearly 60 (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? Flash floods triggered by a tropical storm have killed nearly 60 people in the southern Philippines, with many more missing across vast regions, officials said Saturday.

Lemuel Gunda, head of a rescue team in Cagayan de Oro city, told The Associated Press that at least 40 bodies were recovered there.

Mayor Lawrence Cruz of nearby Iligan said that at least 15 people were killed in his city alone and that many more were missing.

Those missing included a radio broadcaster who was swept away while trying to save his neighbors, Cruz said.

The chief of the national disaster rescue agency, Benito Ramos, said that officials were still getting reports from the field and that casualties would likely rise.

The floods were triggered by Tropical Storm Washi, which dumped heavy rains over the southern Mindanao region overnight.

Ramos said the dead included at least nine people in a single village in Lanao del Norte province, with floodwaters surging in the middle of the night and quickly reaching rooftops, trapping many residents and causing them to drown.

"Massive flooding had been reported over the region, especially in Iligan city and Cagayan de Oro city," Ramos said, adding that tens of thousands of people sought shelter on high ground.

Back-to-back typhoons in September left more than 100 people dead in the northern Philippines.

Inside search engines' war on bad results

ANYONE can publish on the web, but it would be better if some people didn't; the world does not need another site that provides advice on how to unlock an iPhone or find cheap car insurance. Now new evidence shows that search engines have upped their game to make sure their results are not dominated by such low-quality sites.

Search engines are meant to pick out high-quality sites amid the sea of knock-offs, but even they get overwhelmed. As recently as March, for example, the first 10 results from a Google search for "how to organise your desktop" contained nine links to pages churned out by "content farms" - websites that publish reams of articles, often of dubious quality, that aim simply to attract clicks and advertising dollars.

That prompted New Scientist to ask computer scientistRichard McCreadie at the University of Glasgow, UK, to look into the issue. The results show that Google and Microsoft have won a major victory in the fight against such content farms. In the process they may have inflicted serious pain on two organisations often cited as providers of content farm material: Seed, a project from AOL, appears to have stopped commissioning content from freelance writers, though the firm declined to comment. And Santa Monica-based Demand Media has seen its stock price fall by over 50 per cent since it went public earlier this year for $1.5 billion.

Most of the credit for such changes has been given to Google, which this February announced that it had updated its search algorithm in a bid to prioritise sites that publish original and well-researched material. It won't provide details, but many site owners noticed that the update detected and penalised sites that publish multiple near-identical articles, a favourite tactic of content farms. For example, the traffic flowing from search engines to eHow, a Demand Media site, dropped 20 per cent after the update. Google has also enlisted users to keep up the fight - it says that it now demotes sites that people choose to exclude from search results.

To test how successful Google and Microsoft's Bing have been at fending off content-farmed results, McCreadie ran 50 search queries known to be a target of content farmers, such as "how to train for a marathon", in March and August this year. Then he paid people to examine the results for links to low-quality sites, where "low quality" was defined as uninformative sites whose primary function appears to be displaying adverts.

The results are striking. In the case of the marathon query, sites that contained lists of generic tips, such as "invest in a good pair of running shoes", were present in the top 10 in March but had disappeared by August, while high-quality sources, such as Runner's World magazine, now appear near the top. Similar trends were found throughout the 50 queries.

The story is far from over. Search engines play such a prominent role in our lives - Google alone handles over a billion queries a day - that companies constantly vie for the top places in the results. Sites can rank highly by producing authoritative material, but this is expensive, so there will always be those looking for a cheap short cut. Content farms may be out for now, but with billions of dollars hanging in the balance, it's just a matter of time before the next battle commences.

This DIY Solar Powered Robot Kit Is Your Creative Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

I hate being sick. I hate being sick on a Friday. Of all days, right! I hate being sick when the sun is out. Why not pound my head on a rainy day? I pretty much hate everything when I'm sick. So my solution is to make these foolish pacts with myself that I'm going to do everything when I get better. Like I'm going to be a different person. I'm going to go to the gym! To the museums! To volunteer! You just see, when I'm back on my feet, I'll be a better person! And well, that never happens. I just get better and forget about ever being sick. So being sick sucks. It makes you crazy. Having a 6-in-1 DIY Solar Powered Robot Kit for 10 bucks doesn't suck. -CC More »

Wade Davis' 6 favorite books about World War I (The Week)

New York ? National Geographic's explorer-in-residence recommends works by Robert Graves, Vera Brittain, and T.E. Lawrence

Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain (Penguin, $18). Brittain lost her fianc?, her two best friends, and her beloved brother to World War I. By the end of the fighting, she wrote, there was no one left to dance with. This heartrending memoir traces a journey from innocence to horror, from agony to revelation.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom by T.E. Lawrence (Wilder, $13). Lawrence was deeply conflicted about his public image as the hero of a war that had crushed the very notion of heroism. He began his first chapter: "Some of the evil of my tale may have been inherent in our circumstances." He goes on to describe how his men lay naked together, shamed, beneath "the innumerable silences of stars." If he had to be a war hero, British society would have to deal with the truth of his desires and compulsions.

SEE ALSO: Dagoberto Gilb's 6 favorite books

    ?

Good-Bye to All That by Robert Graves (Anchor, $16). At the Somme, in 1916, a severely wounded Graves was left among the dead, and lay delirious beneath the searing sun for days. In this stirring memoir, he also recalls the night the war ended: "The news sent me out walking...cursing and sobbing and thinking of the dead."

Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks (Vintage, $16). Throughout the war, 25,000 British coal miners lived underground, tunneling beneath enemy lines to lay charges of TNT. The Germans were doing the same. The climactic scene of Birdsong, in which both sides engage in combat in the darkness far underground, is the most harrowing in the vast literature on the war.

SEE ALSO: Jack Jacobs' 6 favorite books about war

    ?

Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden (Penguin, $15). Boyden's novel follows two Cree men recruited as snipers by the Canadian army. Spare in style, it reads as one long, haunted hallucination ? the Western Front as seen through the eyes of the shaman.

The Great War and Modern Memory by Paul Fussell (Oxford, $20). If the war shattered the last vestiges of the old order, peace heralded the birth of modern times. This is the seminal book for understanding what the war implied for a "lost generation," and for the world to come.

SEE ALSO: Ann Beattie's 6 favorite books

    ?

? Wade Davis' new book,?Into the Silence,?investigates how the trauma of war shaped George Mallory's 1920s expeditions to Mount Everest.
