(AP) ? Former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, the outspoken Pennsylvania centrist whose switch from Republican to Democrat ended a 30-year career in which he played a pivotal role in several Supreme Court nominations, died Sunday. He was 82.

Specter, who announced in late August that he was battling cancer, died at his home in Philadelphia from complications of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, said his son Shanin. Over the years, Arlen Specter had fought two previous bouts with Hodgkin's disease, overcome a brain tumor and survived cardiac arrest following bypass surgery.

Specter rose to prominence in the 1960s as an aggressive Philadelphia prosecutor and as an assistant counsel to the Warren Commission, developing the single-bullet theory that posited just one bullet struck both President Kennedy and Texas Gov. John Connally ? an assumption critical to the argument that presidential assassin Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. The theory remains controversial and was the focus of Oliver Stone's 1991 movie "JFK."

In 1987, Specter helped thwart the Supreme Court nomination of former federal appeals Judge Robert H. Bork ? earning him conservative enemies who still bitterly refer to such rejections as being "borked."

But four years later, Specter was criticized by liberals for his tough questioning of Anita Hill at Clarence Thomas' Supreme Court nomination hearings and for accusing her of committing "flat-out perjury." The nationally televised interrogation incensed women's groups and nearly cost him his seat in 1992.

Specter, who had battled cancer, was Pennsylvania's longest-serving senator when Democrats picked then-U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak over him in the 2010 primary, despite Specter's endorsements by President Barack Obama and other Democratic leaders. Sestak lost Specter's seat to conservative Republican Rep. Pat Toomey by 2 percentage points.

A political moderate, Specter was swept into the Senate in the Reagan landslide of 1980.

He took credit for helping to defeat President Clinton's national health care plan ? the complexities of which he highlighted in a gigantic chart that hung on his office wall for years afterward ? and helped lead the investigation into Gulf War syndrome. Following the Iran-Contra scandal, he pushed legislation that created the inspectors general of the CIA.

As a senior member of the powerful Appropriations Committee, Specter pushed for increased funding for stem-cell research, breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease, and supported several labor-backed initiatives in a GOP-led Congress. He also doggedly sought federal funds for local projects in his home state.

The former Democrat was not shy about bucking fellow Republicans.

In 1995, he launched a presidential bid, denouncing religious conservatives as the "fringe" that plays too large a role in setting the party's agenda. Specter, who was Jewish, bowed out before the first primary because of lackluster fundraising.

Despite his tireless campaigning, Specter's irascible independence caught up with him in 2004. Specter barely survived a GOP primary challenge by Toomey by 17,000 votes of more than 1.4 million cast. He went on to easily win the general election with the help of organized labor, a traditionally Democratic constituency.

Specter startled fellow senators in April 2009 when he announced he was switching to the Democratic side, saying he found himself "increasingly at odds with the Republican philosophy." Earlier in the year, he had been one of only three Republicans in Congress ? and the only one facing re-election in 2010 ? who voted for President Barack Obama's economic stimulus bill.

He also said he had concluded that his chance of defeating a GOP challenger in the 2010 party primary was bleak. But he said the Democrats couldn't count on him to be "an automatic 60th vote" to give the party a filibuster-proof majority.

Specter outspent Sestak, a retired Navy vice admiral, but Sestak attacked him as a political opportunist who switched parties to save his job. A memorable campaign ad used Specter's own words against him: "My change in party will enable me to be re-elected."

Specter was diagnosed in February 2005 with stage IV Hodgkin's disease, a cancer of the lymphatic system. Announcing the diagnosis with his trademark doggedness, Specter said: "I have beaten a brain tumor, bypass heart surgery and many tough political opponents and I'm going to beat this, too."

He wrote of his struggle in a 2008 book, "Never Give In: Battling Cancer in the Senate," saying he wanted to let others facing similar crises "ought to know they are not alone."

Cancer handed him "a stark look at mortality" and an "added sense of humility," Specter told The Associated Press.

Intellectual and stubborn, Specter played squash nearly every day into his mid-70s and liked to unwind with a martini or two at night. He took the lead on a wide spectrum of issues and was no stranger to controversy.

Born in Wichita, Kan., on Feb. 12, 1930, Specter spent summers toiling in his father's junkyard in Russell, Kan., where he knew another future senator ? Bob Dole. The junkyard thrived during World War II, allowing Specter's father to send his four children to college.

Specter left Kansas for college in 1947 because the University of Kansas, where his best friends were headed, did not have Jewish fraternities. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1951 and Yale law school in 1956. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1953.

Friends say his childhood circumstances made him determined, tough and independent-minded. Specter considered his father's triumphs the embodiment of the American dream, a fulfillment that friends say drove him to a career in public life.

He entered politics as a Democrat in Philadelphia in the early 1960s, when he was an assistant district attorney who sent six Teamsters officials to jail for union corruption.

After working on the Warren Commission, he returned to Philadelphia and challenged his boss, James Crumlish, for district attorney in 1965. Specter ran as a Republican and was derided by Crumlish as "Benedict Arlen." But Crumlish lost to his protege by 36,000 votes.

It was to be the last time until 1980 that Specter would win an election to higher office, despite three attempts ? a 1967 bid for Philadelphia mayor, a 1976 loss to John Heinz for Senate and a 1978 defeat by Dick Thornburgh for governor.

Specter lost re-election as district attorney in 1973 and went into private practice. Among his most notorious clients as a private attorney was Ira Einhorn, a Philadelphia counterculture celebrity who killed his girlfriend in 1977.

Finally, in 1980, Specter won the Senate seat vacated by retiring Republican Richard Schweiker, defeating former Pittsburgh Mayor Pete Flaherty.

After leaving the Senate in January 2011, the University of Pennsylvania Law School announced Specter would teach a course about Congress' relationship with the Supreme Court, and Maryland Public Television launched a political-affairs show hosted by the former senator.

A funeral was scheduled for Tuesday in Penn Valley, Pa., and will be open to the public, followed by burial in Huntingdon Valley, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, and two sons, Shanin and Steve, and four granddaughters.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
OPEN LETTER

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn
Federal DemocraticRepublic of Ethiopia
Office of the Prime Minister
P.O. Box1031
Addis Ababa,Ethiopia

Re: Restrictions on Civil Society and Media

Dear Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn,

As you assume the Premiership of Ethiopia, we, the undersigned organisations and individuals, would like to take the opportunity to raise with you a number of issues which we urge you to address as a matter of priority. We believe that you now have the opportunity to set a new standard of responsible and accountable leadership and to usher in a new era of promotion of human rights and respect for the rule of law. We call upon your government to take steps immediately to begin this process, in accordance with the Ethiopian Constitution and Ethiopia?s obligations under international human rights law and standards. This should begin with the release from prison of journalists, political opposition party members and other dissidents detained for the peaceful expression of their political views. We urge you to acknowledge and respect the role of civil society and a press corps free of unnecessary or excessive state control, as essential, if sometimes adversarial, partners to the attainment of Ethiopia?s human rights and development goals.

Mr. Prime Minister, Ethiopia faces serious challenges in food security, poverty, climate change and regional stability. Civil society organisations and independent media practitioners not only have full rights to freedom of expression and association, but are also important stakeholders in responding to these challenges. We urge your government to enable and protect the ability of all segments of society to participate in the public affairs of the country and freely contribute ideas and work, and we urge you to allow the unfettered expression of the natural diversity of views allowed by the Constitution and international law. We note that the Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia gives due precedence to the enjoyment of fundamental rights and freedoms and their interpretation in a manner consistent with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and international human rights treaties ratified by Ethiopia.

Over the past few years, many civil society organisations, journalists and political dissidents have faced harassment and prosecution while peacefully exercising such freedoms. Several journalists remain in prison on terrorism and anti-state charges that were based on their peaceful activities including voicing criticism of the government, calling for reform and reporting on opposition movements.

For instance, prominent ?journalist and human rights defender, Eskinder Nega, was arrested on 14 September 2011, just days after publishing an article questioning the imprisonment of eminent actor Debebe Eshetu as a terrorist suspect and participating in a meeting where the issue of the uprisings in the Middle East and North Africawas discussed. He was convicted of participation in a terrorism network on the basis of a video of this public political forum, in which he spoke about whether the popular uprisings could spread toEthiopia. ?He was sentenced to 18 years? imprisonment on 13 July 2012. Journalists Woubshet Taye and Reyot Alemu have also been sentenced to lengthy prison terms based on their involvement in and reporting on criticism of the government. The African Commission on Human and Peoples? Rights and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights have expressed alarm concerning the cases of journalists and other dissidents convicted of terrorism offences, and have called on the government to review the Anti-Terrorism law to ensure it complies with international human rights standards.

We thus urge your government, at this opportune moment, to consider and protect the vital role that independent journalists, civil society organisations and political dissidents play in holding the government to account for its performance on its domestic and international human rights obligations.

We appeal to you to restore the faith of the Ethiopian people and the international community in the Ethiopian state and lead a government which draws its strength and legitimacy from the pluralistic inclusion of different voices from all segments of society.

We believe the following measures would show your strong leadership in upholding human rights and civil society freedoms: (i) order the immediate and unconditional release of imprisoned dissidents and journalists, (ii) amend provisions of the 2009 ?Anti-Terrorism Proclamation which are over broad to the extent that they encompass and therefore criminalize ?the peaceful exercise of fundamental rights, (iii) amend the 2009 Charities and Societies Proclamation to remove restrictions on civil society activities and funding of human rights organisations, (iv) cooperate with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to review the Charities and Societies Proclamation (2009) and the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation (2009), and (v) extend an open invitation to UN Special Procedures mandate holders to visit Ethiopia. As Ethiopia is standing as a candidate for the UN Human Rights Council, we encourage your government to include these measures in its election pledges.

We would be pleased to discuss these matters with you further.

Sincerely,

Internet Promotion Is Good For Your Business. Learn Why. | Eric - First

Website marketing is a good way to grow any business. An advantage to Affiliate marketing is the greater volume of potential customers you can market to. There are some tricks, however, to market your business more effectively. This article will give you some valuable tips.

Avoid spamming people at all costs. People hate it when they see spam, so avoid making yourself unlikeable and don?t spam your followers. By not placing a personal touch in your advertising, it can turn people away.

Look at your website from the customer?s point of view. Are you able to make your way around the site with ease? Is your content fun and interesting? Is the ordering process quick and effective? It?s pointless to do all the SEO strategies and leg work necessary to bring in the customers, then lose them with a confusing and sub-par website.

TIP! Make several different links throughout a site, but then create a central hub. Balance the need for variety on your site with the need to keep it structured.

When making your website, try to make it visibly appealing with as much interesting content as possible. You must focus on being able to give your customer knowledge in a short amount of time for them to know the product that they are buying. Don?t pad your descriptions or provide irrelevant information that will just bore your customers.

Compiling a mailing list with all relevant client information is vital. You can offer customers the option to provide their information, or you can make it mandatory for purchases. Later, you can incorporate this information to market to your customers, as well as send them promotional materials or inquire about customer feedback.

Successful Internet marketers are enthusiastic about what it is they?re trying to do. Unless you can show just how much you love your product, nobody else is going to enjoy what you?re selling. If your own enthusiasm is convincing, it will rub off on potential customers. This can boost sales and profits for your business.

TIP! Make your customers aware of your privacy policy and let them know how you will protect their confidential information. Many online users are reluctant to provide personal or financial details over the Internet, so it is important to assuage them with guarantees that this information is truly safe.

Attaching your keyword to internal links is very useful. The longer people stay on your website, the more likely they are to buy something, so make sure interesting, older content is easy to find. Internal links are a free way to advertise to current customers and to help get you more hits from other advertising avenues.

If your potential or current customers seem interested in making donations to charity, offer to give profits to that charity every time they buy. Always state clearly what percentage of sales will be donated. You do not give a large percentage of your profits to a charity for this to be a good marketing strategy.

TIP! Your site needs to offer something unique. This can attract a lot of individuals to your site.

You can use tools to see how many people are visiting your site versus how many people are ordering from your site. Analyze the information, and you can get quick feedback on whether your online marketing is effective or not. Most companies have add-ons and tools that will help you track all of your activity.

One way to market online is to encourage visitors to buy by using discount prices. You can easily do this by listing the discounted price and the original price together next to a certain item. Perhaps you might say something like, ?Buy now and save $20 dollars on the purchase?.

Create a unique quality website and you will get more visitors. E-books filled with tips or a humorous article or cartoon can also bring traffic to your site. Giving your customers something they can only get through you is a great marketing tool.

TIP! Finding customers who want your products now is the best way to get a sale. Leads that occur in real time are fantastic because the customer wants your product now.

To gain potential customers, think of having a $1 promotional sale for new clients. This helps with promotion, builds exposure and encourages new traffic to your site. People are also likely to purchase additional, non-sale items. Make sure you are confident.

Advertising is necessary to sell anything, whether online or not. Although the up-front expenses can be high, the traffic and leads that ads generate make the investment worthwhile. This will allow you to reach customers that you may not have discovered in other ways.

It is optimal to be able to run pages on numerous social networking sites, but consider the time that would need to be invested to keep them up-to-date and functioning. If you have a profile that does not have fresh content people will think it is spam.

TIP! Even if you are not aware of it, you already have what you need to be a successful internet marketing businessperson. You don?t need any special software or tools that promise overnight success; you just need your own hands and mind to succeed.

You will want to include a customer testimonial page on your site. Many people are interested to read what other users have experienced while using a particular product or service. By feeling comfortable with your business, they will likely spend more money.

Try to avoid thinking of Online marketing as a job replacement, but rather as a hobby, especially at first. If you realize this is something you are good at you might consider it as a career, but initially try thinking of it as something fun rather than a money making endeavor.

You are now much more educated about the techniques for evolving internet businesses. Your next move is to put that knowledge to work for you and adapt it to your own professional needs. One approach won?t fit all, so make sure to stay flexible and make adjustments if necessary. The important thing is to keep your knowledge growing and not fear change

TIP! It is essential to know your target audience when you are trying to grow your Internet business. You will have a difficult time selling something to someone that shows absolutely no interest in what you are offering.

Focus on space debris: Envisat

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? Space debris came into focus last week at the International Astronautical Congress in Naples, Italy. Envisat, The European Space Agency's largest Earth observation satellite, ended its mission last spring and was a subject of major interest in the Space Debris and Legal session.

Envisat was planned and designed in 1987-1990, a time when space debris was not considered to be a serious problem and before the existence of mitigation guidelines, established by the UN in 2007 and adopted the next year by ESA for all of its projects.

Only later, during the post-launch operational phase, did Envisat's orbit of about 780 km become a risky debris environment, particularly following the Chinese antisatellite missile test in 2007 and the collision between the Iridium and the Cosmos satellites in 2009.

Lowering Envisat to an orbit that would allow reentry within 25 years, however, was never an option because of its design and limited amount of fuel.

Even if controllers had lowered the satellite immediately after launch in 2002, there would not have been enough fuel to bring it down low enough -- to around 600 km -- where it could reenter within 25 years.

In 2010, part of the remaining fuel was used to lower the satellite slightly into a less crowded orbit at 768 km, while keeping enough reserve to provide collision avoidance for several years.

The lower orbit also ensured continuity of crucial Earth-observation data until the next generation of satellites -- the Sentinels -- are fully operational in 2013.

In April 2012, however, contact with Envisat was suddenly lost, preventing ESA from controlling the spacecraft and disrupting data provision to the international Earth observation user community.

ESA is strongly committed to reducing space debris. Today, the deorbiting of missions is taken into consideration during the development of future satellites, and during the operations of current satellites when technically feasible.

Indeed, ESA decided to terminate operations of the 16-year-old ERS-2 satellite in 2011 because there was still enough fuel to lower its orbit to about 570 km, allowing it to reenter well within 25 years.

During the last years of Envisat, ESA began to investigate new technology to deorbit space debris in a controlled fashion.

The problem of debris in low orbits is of paramount importance. ESA space debris represents about 0.5% of the more than 16 000 objects catalogued by the US surveillance network.

ESA is working together with other agencies to reinforce international cooperation in monitoring space debris and to study mitigation and remediation measures that will ensure the future of space endeavours.

During its extended operational lifetime, Envisat provided crucial Earth observation data not only to scientists, but also to many operational services, such as monitoring floods and oil spills.

Its data supported civil protection authorities in managing natural and human-made disasters.

An estimated 2500 scientific publications so far have been based on the data provided by the satellite during its ten-year life.

Follow the leader for less stressed pets | World Veterinary Association

Source:

International animal behaviour expert Dr Sophia Yin will discuss the latest techniques for owners and vets in reducing stress in pets, at the Australian Veterinary Association?s behaviour conference in Melbourne this month.

Dr Yin said that humans play a huge role in modifying behaviour in fearful and aggressive animals.

?Pets are less likely to be stressed when they have owners who can lead, not like a dictator, but more like a partner in a dance. This is someone who gives clear signals, rewards desirable behaviour as it occurs, removes rewards for inappropriate behaviour immediately and sticks to the plan consistently until the new, good behaviour is a habit.?

Where's the Discussion of Trojan Horses? - NYTimes.com

The Mykonos Vase, discovered in 1961 in the Cyclades, is one of the earliest accounts of the Trojan Horse, used as a subterfuge by the Greeks to enter the city of Troy during the Trojan War. Odysseus and a platoon of 30 soldiers hid in a wooden horse that was presented to Troy, and thus were able to gain access to the heavily defended city.

Thousands of years later, it remains a thoroughly modern concept that can increasingly be found at the heart of modern warfare strategies. Find your way into the computers and networks of your enemy?s weapons and military and you can render them useless in the face of an attack.

Modern Trojan horses are computer code or vulnerabilities hidden in software or hardware that would allow a spy or an attacker to gain access to an adversary?s computers and networks.

Thus it was striking that the word ?Trojan? was not mentioned in a 52-page report issued Monday by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence focusing on the activities of two giant Chinese telecommunications firms, Huawei and ZTE, which have long been suspected of having links to the Chinese government.

Recently, for example, Stuxnet, a surreptitious program that was reportedly designed by United States and Israeli intelligence agencies to target the Iranian nuclear program, had many of the properties of a highly sophisticated Trojan. The program was at the heart of a concerted effort to delay or destroy the Iranian Natanz nuclear fuel facility. The attack damaged centrifuges and may have provided a surveillance window into Iranian nuclear activities by giving Western intelligence agencies unfettered access to the desktop computers of Iranian project managers.

A striking map of the paths followed by Stuxnet infection created by researchers at Symantec, the Silicon Valley computer security firm, indicates that Stuxnet actually broke out of Natanz, rather than breaking in. The program acted as a Trojan horse, perhaps delivered first on a USB memory stick, that then spread through computer networks inside the secret facility before spreading to the outside world.

Possibly that is why the term Trojan ? if it exists in the House report on Huawei and ZTE ? is found only in what is reportedly a classified annex that has not been made openly available.

The report consists of a series of allegations about the activities of the companies, including bribery and surveillance, but little hard evidence. Reports of ?suspicious? incidents including a supposed case of ?beaconing? from Cricket, a Texas wireless operator that uses Huawei equipment, have been heatedly denied by Huawei.

?This is the problem with the issue for the last two or three years,? said Richard A. Clarke, who served at the nation?s counterterrorism czar in both the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. ?There is a government-sponsored whispering campaign against Huawei, which we are all being asked to take on faith because the government alleges it has information but it can?t find a way of revealing that.?

If this issue is important enough, he said, there should be ways of declassifying the information. ?They?re making important accusations,? he said. ?Important accusations require important proof.?

According to several former government officials, the real issue may not be what has happened in the past but rather what might happen if Huawei gear were widely used in American telecommunications networks. Wide use of its equipment would mean that the company would have to service and fix the network, requiring extensive access for its technical personnel to telecommunications networks in the United States.

The potential consequences of such an arrangement have already demonstrated according to Mr. Clarke, who wrote in ?CyberWar: The Next Threat to National Security and What to Do About It,? that in 2007 Syrian anti-aircraft radar was rendered useless in the face of a remarkably sophisticated cyberattack by Israel. Israeli aircraft were able to destroy a Syrian nuclear reactor without any response from the country?s military.

He disputes a recent New Yorker article that asserted that the bombing attack was supported by conventional electronic warfare, which involves jamming or deceiving an enemies? radar with high-powered radio waves.

?Regular electronic warfare fills the frequencies with static and overpowers the frequencies,? he said. ?That wakes people up. That didn?t happen. The Syrians didn?t notice the jamming of their radars.?

In 2009, The New York Times reported that an American semiconductor industry executive who claimed to have direct knowledge of the operation said that technology for disabling the radars was supplied by Americans to the Israeli electronic intelligence agency, Unit 8200.

The disabling technology was given informally but with the knowledge of the American government, said the executive, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. His claim could not be independently verified, and American military, intelligence and contractors with classified clearance declined to discuss the attack.

If his account is true, it may be the real reason that the United States government has worked so hard to make sure that American computer networks are not made in China.

The Future for Smart! Forstars? | My Perfect Automobile

VN:F [1.9.20_1166]

Rating: 5.0/5 (1 vote cast)

Does the?Smart?Forstars concept at the 2012 Paris Motor Show give a hint at future design direction for the?Daimler?subsidiary?s compact Fortwo two seater? Head of Smart, Dr. Annette Winkler, gave an answer in her press conference speech: ?The Smart Forstars offers another glimpse into the future of Smart. Some design details of this car you will find in our upcoming Smart four-seater.?

The Forstars concept provides a different interpretation of the Smart two-seater formula, presenting a more contemporary shape. Comparing the dimensions with the current Fortwo, the Forstars concept is 855 mm (33.7 in) longer, 151 mm (5.9 in) wider, and up to 37 mm (1.5 in) lower. The wheelbase is some 603 mm (23.7 in) longer at 2470 mm (97.2 in). The track is some 193 mm (7.6 in) wider at the front at 1475 mm (58.1 in), remaining the same at the rear, making it 90 mm (3.5 in) wider than the current Fortwo. The Forstars? main body features are shared with those of the For-us concept seen at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

Smart refers to the Forstars as a sports utility coupe, with the extra length providing a stowage space behind the seats that is 900 mm (35.4 in) longer than that of the Fortwo. This is accessed through the glass tailgate at the rear, while the lower tailboard can be lowered electrically into a position parallel with the load floor, then retracted by 280 mm (11.0 in), improving access to the cargo area.

Inside, the seat shells incorporate an open section in the center, covered with a fabric throw, which can be switched for a change of color. The open section also allows for loading of long items through the passenger seat with the seat cover removed.

The Forstars name is a reference to the convex glass roof above the seats, potentially providing a nighttime view of the stars. The lighthearted theme is continued by the video projector integrated into the hood. This would be operated via Bluetooth from a smartphone, mounted in a bracket where the rear-view mirror would normally be sited. Using a rear-mounted video camera, the smartphone would double as a rear-view mirror, media source, and control system for the video projector, providing a personal drive-in movie service using a suitable wall. Cinema sound would be provided by speakers concealed in the ventilation openings in the side panels behind the doors.

The rhombic front lights incorporate an ?eyebrow? section, and a ring of LEDs around the headlamp provide the indicators and daytime running lamps. The rear lamps echo the rhombic shape of those at the front. Both rear lamps open. One can accommodate a drink can and the other the recharging point for the battery pack.

The Forstars is powered by the same 60-kW electric motor that powers the new Smart?Brabus?electric drive. The drive motor delivers 135 N?m (100 lb?ft) of torque to propel the car to a claimed top speed of over 130 km/h (81 mph). The lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 17.6 kW?h. Recharging would take up to 7 h from a 230-V domestic socket or 1 h from a rapid charging point.

Nice trailer:

Newly Moderate Mitt Romney Says He Won't Pursue Abortion Laws

Mitt Romney let his guard down a little bit on Tuesday, when he told the Des Moines Register that he wouldn't pursue any abortion legislation if elected to the nation's highest office. "There's no legislation with regards to abortion that I'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda," said the Republican candidate. The paper qualified these remarks a bit, explaining that Romney "would reinstate the so-called Mexico City policy that bans U.S. foreign aid dollars from being used to do abortions" by executive order.

RELATED: Mitt the Moderate: An Alternate Campaign History

Maybe "let his guard down" isn't the right way to describe Romney's less-than-a-month-to-go rhetoric. "Tried to win more votes" is an obvious alternative -- at least that's what the Obama camp thinks. "It's troubling that Mitt Romney is so willing to play politics with such important issues. But we know the truth about where he stands on a woman's right to choose -- he's said he'd be delighted to sign a bill banning all abortions, and called?Roe v. Wade?'one of the?darkest moments in Supreme Court history' while pledging to appoint Supreme Court justices who will overturn it," said Lis Smith, a campaign spokesperson for Obama. "Women simply can't trust him."

RELATED: Paul Ryan Has a New Abortion Stance

Well, that's pretty aggressive. But based on Romney's record, a gut check is in order. The fact of the matter is that Romney's bounced back and forth on this issue a number of times. "To be sure, he has flip-flopped on the issue, earning?a Full Flop?on PolitiFact's Flip-O-Meter," says The Tampa Bay Times. As NPR points out, Romney is pretty famous for championing abortion rights laws while governor of Massachusetts. But as The Wall Street Journal points out, Romney has also "vowed to eliminate federal funds for Planned Parenthood clinics."?

RELATED: Romney Says He's as Consistent as a Human Can Be

As Romney himself made clear to the Des Moines Register, however, a president doesn't need silly laws to change policy. Plus, just because he wouldn't put abortion legislation on his agenda doesn't mean he would support types of legislation that are about abortion but don't specifically use the word "abortion". Take it away, Romney campaign. "Governor Romney would of course support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life," Romney spokesperson Andrea Saul told??told the National Review?after the Des Moines Register published its article.?

Glad we cleared that up.

93% Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

All Critics (42) | Top Critics (17) | Fresh (39) | Rotten (3)

A highly entertaining and colorful portrait of a unique woman.

The visual emphasis in The Eye Has to Travel is on the pages of the magazines Vreeland dominated, and as such it's a sleek eyeful.

Vivid, delicious trip through the heyday of fashion mags is a must for followers of clothes, print design, and high society.

Vreeland comes across in the movie as something of a cross between Auntie Mame and Godzilla. She was a true original in a world where knock-offs abounded.

The film, written and directed by Vreeland's granddaughter-in-law, mainly rests on the strength of its subject.

Makes a compelling case for the late Diana Vreeland as the 20th century's pre-eminent tastemaker, not to mention one of its most extravagant personalities.

[A] warm portrait of the world's first true fashion maven.

It can be hard to keep up at points -- not with the plot, but with the amount of inspiration that Diana can still strew over an audience.

As a biographical documentary, Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel is complete and satisfying. As a leading character, Mrs. Vreeland is entirely entertaining.

Vreeland's attention to detail, her love of new and exciting images, her devotion to and ability to identify, that ethereal thing called style, come across loudly and clearly.

With her lacquered black hair and Kabuki-like face, one-time 'ugly duckling' Vreeland was her own work of art and, as the film reminds us, she was one of the most important and amusing self-made works of art of her century.

[An] entertaining bit of hagiography ...

An entertaining and visually apt, if less than deeply probing, portrait of an imperishable fashion icon.

In an age where documentaries are becoming the place to go for those interested in investing their time & money in the company of thoughtful and watchable subjects, The Eye Has to Travel is yet another welcome addition to that list.

It's informative and not uncritical, touching as it does in an affectionate manner on her authoritarian personality and her somewhat cavalier attitude towards matters of fact and the history of fashion.

Fashion aficionados aren't the only viewers who can appreciate this energetic documentary about the life of Vreeland.

Netflix CEO to step down from Microsoft's board

(AP Photo/Paul Sakuma)

(AP) ? Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is leaving Microsoft's board of directors next month, giving him more time to focus on the myriad of challenges facing Netflix's video subscription service.

The departure announced Tuesday comes 5 1/2 years after Hastings joined Microsoft's board.

Hastings' connection with the world's largest software maker proved fruitful for Netflix Inc.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 video game console became one of the first Internet-connected devices that could be plugged into a television set so selections from Netflix's library of movies and old TV series could be streamed into subscribers' households. Analysts credit the Xbox and other video game consoles for helping Netflix attract millions more subscribers during the past four years.

"Reed has been a terrific board member, and his insights and experience have really helped guide us through a critical period of transformation for both Microsoft and the industry," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a statement.

When Hastings steps down from the board at Microsoft's annual meeting on Nov. 28, the company will appoint a new lead independent director. Hastings has filled that role since December 2010. The position requires coordinating meetings with other board members with no direct ties to Microsoft and steering communications with major shareholders.

Microsoft Corp. paid Hastings $265,000 in cash and stock during the company's past fiscal year, which ended in June, according to documents filed Tuesday.

Hastings, 51, also owns about 226,000 shares of Microsoft stock currently worth $6.6 million.

The decision to quit Microsoft's board appears to be driven by Hastings' desire to restore Netflix's luster on Wall Street. The Los Gatos, Calif., video company's stock closed Tuesday at $65.53, more than 75 percent below its peak of nearly $305 more than a year ago.

In a statement, Hastings said he wants to devote time to Netflix and his long-running efforts to create better schools in California. He remains on the boards of Netflix and online social networking leader Facebook Inc., which he joined last year.

A backlash followed Hastings' abrupt decision last summer to start charging separately for the company's DVD-by-mail plan and the service that streams video through the Xbox and a variety of other Internet-connected devices. The change resulted in a price increase of as much as 60 percent for Netflix subscribers who wanted to keep getting both DVDs and Internet video from the company.

Hordes of subscribers lambasted Hastings and Netflix, resulting in mass cancellations that alarmed investors. Although the furor over the price increase has diminished, investors remain worried about Netflix's dwindling profits as it shoulders rising costs for online video licensing fees and an international expansion. Intensifying competition from Amazon.com Inc. and other companies offering various ways to stream Internet video also are dragging down Netflix's stock.

Analysts have periodically wondered whether Microsoft might be interested in launching its own video service on the Xbox in an attempt to become a more influential force in living rooms. Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Wash., also could tie a video service to smartphones and tablets running on its Windows operating system.

Tool blocks Internet users who lack empathy

1 day

A free tool offered by a civil rights group promises to?keep websites free of spam, bots and humans who hate free and equal citizenship regardless of race, color, sex, religion, national origin?or disability. The unfortunate?result:?An alternate-universe analog to a?Cosmo quiz titled ?Are You a Psychopath?? Or maybe the Voight-Kampff test of ?Blade Runner? fame.

Civil Rights CAPTCHA, developed by Civil Rights Defenders, turns those squiggly letters and numbers you must correctly input to gain website access (CAPTCHAs) into three possible responses to an emotionally?charged question about human rights. The user must?choose the ?correct? emotional response from the set of three randomly-generated words supplied. It?s not enough to prove you?re human. You must also prove your humanity. ?

For example:

Civil Rights CAPTCHA was timed to debut just ahead of a now-cancelled?gay and transgender march in Serbia. So, many of the auto-generated responses on the tool?s live example are gay rights-related.

Another example:

Civil Rights Defenders, however, cover other human rights issues the group deals with in?Sweden,?Eastern Europe,?Western Balkans,?Central Asia and Southeast Asia. So there questions reflecting other concerns as well.

For example:

And:

The "correct"?answers should be obvious to anyone whose ever?endured a?bastardized version of the Myers-Briggs?Type Indicator required at many a place of employment to ensure sure you're not the type to make off with the company water cooler. And the questions are more than a little bit leading.?You don't need to be able to find Kosovo on a map to get?that the expected?answer to the question "Two people are tortured in detention. How does that make you feel" is "miserable," and not "hungry" or smart," the other options given in the CAPTCHA.

Further, a civil rights group endorsing such group think in exchange for privilege?? even a small one, such as website access, is straight-up ironic, as well as?unsettling.

So what?s the point?

Civil Rights Defenders says, in part, the point is this:

With over 200 million CAPTCHAs being solved every day, we hope that by catching a tiny amount of those interactions we can help promote and empower our partners - brave human rights defenders, who often put themselves at great risk through their engagement for other people?s rights.?

It?s noble in concept. If human rights organizations are the majority utilizing Civil Rights CAPTCHA on their websites, it?s also?a the choir preaching to the choir.?

The one case for Civil Rights CAPTCHA is education.

Oppressed citizens in?Serbia and Kosovo are well aware of their circumstances. But as referenced earlier, more than a few United States citizens would be hard-pressed to find Serbia and Kosovo on the map. Get Facebook (where forced group think is a way of life) to institute Civil Rights CAPTCHA on its U.S. servers. Then,?instead of, being asked to identify our?friends in random pictures of their pets when Facebook suspects we're?impostors,?maybe we?ll learn something.?

Helen A.S. Popkin goes blah blah blah about the Internet. Join her, won't you, on Twitter?and/or?Facebook. Also,?Google+.

Are You at Risk of Injury from a Hail Storm ...

Hail Storm July 2006 VViolent weather can happen almost anywhere, and perhaps there?s no weather element that?s more dangerous than hail. Hail stones come in sizes that range from as small as a pea to as large as a baseball, and even a short hail storm can lead to physical injuries, property damage and more.

Physical Injuries from Hail

If you are outside during a hail storm, be careful ? you may be at risk for severe injuries. While most hail is small, it is not the size that can cause injuries. The concern with smaller pieces of hail is that they arrive in large numbers, essentially raining down sheets of hard ice chunks. If you are unfortunate enough to be caught outdoors in a hail storm, you may end up with cuts, bruises and even broken bones. Additionally, hail can pose a threat to your eyes if you are not wearing vision protection.

Structural Damage Leads to Injuries

While hail can cause physical damage to the body, that is not the only danger. In fact, hail can damage structures, such as homes or businesses, leading to unsafe conditions and the further possibility for injury. When hail damages a structure?s roofing, small cracks and leaks can begin occurring, often leading to larger ones as time goes by. Once water has had a chance to infiltrate a structure?s wood foundations, rot can set in and cause the entire structure to be at risk of a collapse. Many times, hail creates such a small amount of damage during the actual storm that homeowners and business owners do not even realize the potential for future damage exists until it?s too late. This is when you run the risk of being denied insurance claims as a result of such damage.

Our?Phoenix hail damage attorney warns that insurance companies may deem that the damage to your home or business was pre-existing before the hail storm ever took place. If your property was damaged and you or someone else was injured as a result, contacting an experience attorney can help you resolve all of these issues.

Other Concerns

Hail can also cause injuries in other ways, including making the ground slippery. Hail stones on roadways and walkways can lead to dangerous slips and falls as well as vehicle accidents. Slips and falls that occur as a result of hail stones being on a walkway can lead to severe trauma, including internal organ damage, brain damage and more. Additionally, if you are driving on a roadway that has hail stones on it, your vehicle?s tires may not be able to grip the road, and at that point, your steering will become useless. Because of the loss of driver control, vehicles involved in hail-related accidents often suffer extensive damage.

If You Have Been Injured

If you have suffered injuries because of hail and your injuries could have been prevented by someone else, you may be entitled to compensation from that person or entity. To find out more information on how you can seek out that compensation, most people recommend contacting a personal injury lawyer. A personal injury lawyer can examine the specifics of your case and injuries, and he or she can then recommend a course of action to remedy the situation.
