THPRD plans delayed for field for disabled athletes at Somerset ...

Plans to build an outdoor field for athletes with disabilities at Somerset West Park ? the first of its kind in Oregon ? are moving slower than hoped, and full funding is not yet in place.

The Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District said in August that a master plan for the 6-acre park north of U.S. 26 would be presented to the public by the end of the year. It will probably be early 2013 before public meetings are held, said Bob Wayt, spokesman for the district.

The district authorized a $496,500 contract in October with architecture firm 2.ink Studio to design the park. Once the master plan is finalized, it could be brought to the district for approval in the spring.

Around $1.5 million has been allocated from the district?s 2008 bond measure to pay for the park upgrades, and the Tualatin Hills Park Foundation is expected to raise between $1.7 million and $2.1 million for the project, according to a September staff report. The full cost is estimated around $4.4 million, according to the report.

To cover the difference, the project could be built in phases, or bond money from other areas could be reallocated toward the park, the report said.

Once completed, the park will include a baseball field with dugouts, restrooms bleachers and seating areas that can accommodate people using wheelchairs, walkers and crutches. The site could also include other sports fields.

Kindness key to happiness and acceptance for children

Dec. 26, 2012 ? Children who make an effort to perform acts of kindness are happier and experience greater acceptance from their peers, suggests new research from the University of British Columbia and the University of California, Riverside.

Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, a professor in UBC's Faculty of Education, and co-author Kristin Layous, of the University of California, Riverside, say that increasing peer acceptance is key to preventing bullying.

In the study, published December 26 by PLOS ONE, researchers examined how to boost happiness in students aged 9 to 11 years. Four hundred students from Vancouver elementary schools were asked to report on their happiness and to identify which of their classmates they would like to work with on school activities. Half of the students were asked by their teachers to perform acts of kindness -- like sharing their lunch or giving their mom a hug when she felt stressed -- and half were asked to keep track of pleasant places they visited -- like the playground or a grandparent's house.

After four weeks, the students again reported on their happiness and identified classmates they would like to work with. While both groups said they were happier, kids that had performed acts of kindness selected higher numbers of classmates to work with on school activities.

"We show that kindness has some real benefits for the personal happiness of children but also for the classroom community," says Schonert-Reichl, also a researcher with the Human Early Learning Partnership at UBC.

According to Schonert-Reichl, bullying tends to increase in Grades 4 and 5. By simply asking students to think about how they can act kindly to those around them, "teachers can create a sense of connectedness in the classroom and reduce the likelihood of bullying."

Self-improvement, messing up your potential, and what I missed ...

"Releasing your potential is a very dangerous idea. You should stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up." ?- Dylan Moran

Self-improvement is a dirty word.

On one hand, it's a bit wanky and we think of it as quick fixes that don't really work. On the other, it threatens our sense of self with change or compromise.

I used to think greater self-confidence awaited on the other side. You know, once I was a better me.

The more successful people I've met, the more I've come to see it the other way around.

Here's what I've observed with some successful friends you may know, and their responses below:

Joel Gascoigne

I met Joel Gascoigne, the founder of Buffer, years ago when he was working on his previous startup. While we could speculate how he got Buffer as a startup to take off, he points to his habits as the foundation of his success. Seems he's constantly reading about habit-forming and experimenting with it in his own life. A year ago, he was creating new habits as a tool in his quest for better life-balance. Now, he's building on cemented habits, allowing him to evolve with his role as Buffer grows.

Notice how in this framing, it's not about specific or one-time gains? Exercise isn't to look better. Learning skills isn't to do something better. The emphasis is interesting - it's the small habits that get his attention. These lead to better life-balance, which enables him to do the right things. This leads to his personal growth and happiness.

Rob Fitzpatrick

Rob's known for taking serial founding to the next level. He's been actually doing Customer Development for longer than anyone I know, and does it in such a natural way that someone once called him The Dude Of Lean Startup. And the funny thing is that Rob generally seems to get good at stuff by hanging out in coffee shops, one of the reasons I love working with him.

Take blogging for example. His blog The Startup Toolkit has been quite successful. ?"Figuring out blogging" was a coffee-shop project for Rob, like many other skills he picked up. He gave himself 2 weeks to write as many posts as he could, most of which were experiments of some sort. His subscriber rate jumped several orders of magnitude in those two weeks. Now, he's one of a small handful of bloggers whose posts have broken 1000 points on Hacker News.

Rob wants to figure things out. He makes time for picking up skills but does it organically and experientially, integrating his learning with his existing way of doing things.

Patrick Van Der Pijl

Patrick's the producer of Business Model Generation and the founder of Business Models Inc., a very successful business model innovation consultancy. Before that, Patrick had a great career with a major consultancy. A lot of people who leave high-paying jobs to go for it on their own terms, define themselves in opposition to their old job: "not consulting anymore" or "working for myself." I never heard anything like this from Patrick. He was looking for a better business model for consulting.

He found this better model and Business Models Inc. took off, freeing Patrick, both financially and to do work he loves. (The guy is always smiling!) I don't think this would have been possible if he had constrained himself along the lines of a "leaving consulting" identity.

Kevin Haluk

Kevin was my first co-founder, back when we were both teenagers. We went on to start 3 business together, including a leading IT provider that still operates today (although massively changed under his direction over a decade.) ?As kids, we were a talking point among our parents, teachers and even the local newspapers - a dynamic duo. I was studious and academic and he was a brilliant salesperson. His mom used to joke that I was the brains and he was the bullshit. But Kevin was more than a good salesman, he was the energy, curiosity and willingness to go for it that drove us forward.

Kevin knew his weaknesses and would defer to me readily when appropriate.?In retrospect, I can see it took a huge amount of self-confidence to seek out and trust people with complimentary skills, and to?press forward and figure things out as we went.

Identity, self-confidence and curiosity

In retrospect, I was the one lacking confidence so I focused on being and sounding right. I would study and analyse heavily before opening my mouth, and would try to be as articulate and persuasive as possible. ?But Kevin was more persuasive because he had the confidence to engage in conversation, and learn and improve as he went.

Experimentation is popular among entrepreneurs now - but worthy experiments are backed with a genuine curiosity and willingness to try something new.

Joel's view connecting habits with life-balance and success can be seen elsewhere. ?Duncan Banantyne tells it a similar way in his biography, and the pattern matches with Rob, Kevin and Patrick. Just like diets or exercise routines, you don't expect to see results right away, but anchoring new behaviours or perspectives lead to big improvements over time.?As you improve, your career catches up, but there's a lag.

Massive failures and rebounds are a common theme in entrepreneur biographies, but there's almost always something more than brute tenacity behind them. Look at Felix Dennis, Donald Trump or Richard Branson, and you'll see there's an attitude to perspective and behaviour that underlies their success, and that's what allowed them to break through brick walls.

In all these cases, their confidence and self-awareness allowed them to see self-improvement as part of the journey. The self-improvement itself seems to consistently be tied to some curiosity of how things work or how they could be. And when it comes to identity, I can see my friends are all better, smarter, faster (and in Joel's case, buffer) but they're still the same guy!

Self-improvement requires self-confidence as a starting point. Enough so you have a willingness to try, enough to be sure of your own identity and enough to be humbly aware of your own weaknesses.

Patrick Van Der Pijl:

I have not looked at it from that perspective before. Is self confidence something you're born with or can you develop it? Or do some people think you always need more? I remember one guy at my Business University Nyenrode when we were both studying for our MBA. He - the smartest ass of the class - "I like you Patrick. You are not the smartest in our team, but you always have a positive mindset and you make things work." I think that has also something to do with self confidence. It is about just making it work...

Kevin Haluk:

You taught me that you have to take care of the people around you. Because it's people that make us successful. I've been told that I should focus, so I do the opposite - and it seems to be working.

Joel Gascoigne:

Self improvement is certainly something I consciously work on. I love your observation that there is a lag, that is definitely true if I look back. I'm planning a few changes yet again to my routine and habits, so this is a nice reminder to push forward with the adjustments :-)

If you liked this, there are similar posts in Big Ideas that are worth a look.

Police officer among 2 fatally shot in Houston

HOUSTON (AP) ? A traffic stop turned into a fatal shooting on Christmas Eve when a gunman killed a police officer and bystander in the parking lot of a Houston body shop, police said.

The confrontation followed a chase that began shortly before 9 a.m. Monday when the suspect sped off in his car rather than pull over as an officer had requested, Houston police spokesman John Cannon said. As the suspect fled, he sideswiped a white truck, which also took off after him, he said.

The suspect, identified by Cannon as Harlem Harold Lewis, 21, and the white truck eventually pulled into a nearby Maaco body shop, where Bellaire police Cpl. Jimmie Norman approached the vehicle. Cannon said an argument apparently erupted, and the suspect pulled out a .380 caliber handgun and shot Norman.

"The saddest thing is that the officer, who is deceased, didn't have the opportunity to pull his weapon and defend himself," Cannon said. "It happened that fast."

He said a man then walked out of the body shop, and the suspect shot him.

Other officers arrived at the scene and found Norman lying on the ground and the suspect next to him, holding a gun, Cannon said.

"They are immediately fired upon, and those two officers then returned fire," he said.

The suspect was shot but fled on foot, Cannon said. He hid under a parked truck, but officers followed a trail of blood and arrested him.

"This suspect murdered a police officer and murdered an innocent bystander," Cannon said.

He said Lewis was expected to be charged later Monday with capital murder of a police officer and murder for the death of the bystander.

Norman, 53, worked for the Bellaire Police Department for 23 years and was the first of its officers to be shot in the line of duty, Bellaire police spokesman Robert Beran said.

"We're devastated by his loss. We're devastated by what this has done to his family," Bellaire Police Chief Byron Holloway told reporters at a news conference.

The identity of the bystander has not yet been released.

The parking lot of the body shop remained cordoned off with yellow police tape hours after the shootings. Officers milled around, collecting evidence and discussing the incident. The owners of a nearby auto parts store closed up early for Christmas, although other stores in the strip mall remained open as people rushed in for last-minute holiday errands.

Stephanie Pacheco, who works at the auto parts store, said she saw the officer get out of his patrol car in the parking lot next door and approach the driver. The officer opened the suspect's car door and tried to pull him out, she told the Houston Chronicle.

That's when the suspect opened fire, she said. The officer fell down, and the suspect continued firing shots in other directions, Pacheco said.

"This is senseless, ridiculous and needs to stop," Pacheco said. "I'm tired of seeing people die. It's a sad thing."

The bystander was shot at close range and died at the scene, Cannon said. It wasn't clear why the man stepped outside the body shop or whether he was an employee or a customer, he added. Norman was rushed to a hospital and died there.

The suspect was in critical but stable condition at a Houston hospital. Cannon said he is expected to survive.

Houston and Bellaire police and the Harris County District Attorney's office are investigating.

How to cope with a slow connection away from home

23 hrs.

Q. ?I'm going home for the holidays, and my parents have a very slow connection. Do you have any tips for getting my work done effectively when everything's moving slower than molasses??

Separate your Internet-heavy work and postpone it?
A.?
Before you start making tweaks to your browser and computer, it's a good idea to take stock of what work you have and separate it into two categories. GigaOM explains:

Divide your tasks into bandwidth-heavy and bandwidth-light. Evaluate your routine web tasks and see which ones you can do with a slow connection, and which ones require a faster, more reliable one. This is especially important if your mobile Internet provider charges based on bandwidth usage instead of time. Aliza Sherman did something similar in a previous post, to help her work around bandwidth limits.

This is particularly useful if you know you're going to be stuck on a slow connection, but even if you get yourself in a bind, you can still do some re-prioritization quickly. If you have some Internet-heavy tasks that can't wait, you should delegate them to someone else if you can???heck, even offer to pick up some of your co-workers' Internet-light load if they can help you out.

Tweak your browser for low-speed connections
Chances are, your browser isn't exactly primed for slow Internet speeds. So, we recommend grabbing a second browser that you can tweak to work better with slow connections. Opera is a great choice, because it has a Turbo Mode that optimizes the Web for faster loading, but no matter what, there are a number of tweaks you can make to speed up your browser, like:

With these few tweaks in place, you should find things run a little smoother and you won't be stuck waiting for pages quite as long.

Use mobile, HTML or other low-footprint sites
These days, a lot of websites load up their pages with junk that isn't really a problem when you have a normal high-speed connection, but can really bog things down when your connection is limited. Some of them have alternatives in place.?

Gmail, for example, has a handy HTML version that you can use to cut down on the crap when you need to get into your email quicker. You can also see if a specific site has a mobile version, designed for smartphones. Most mobile sites will only load if you're actually on a mobile device, though, so you'll want to change your browser's user agent to make sites recognize you as a smartphone.

Work outside your browser whenever possible
The?more you stay in your browser, the longer you'll be waiting for pages to load. Travel website Gadling recommends transferring as much of that work outside your browser as possible. For example, if you write on a blog or do any work in Google Docs, transfer that to a desktop app like Microsoft Office or LibreOffice for the time being. Heck, you can even compose an email in Notepad while you wait for it to load???don't waste any time watching a progress bar when you could be doing something else.

When you do have to work in your browser, try not to put too much stress on it. Open one tab at a time, so you aren't trying to load a bunch of pages at once (since it'll take them longer, and you can only read one at a time). Close tabs you aren't using often, as they can often take up bandwidth even if you aren't looking at them.

Turn off bandwidth-sucking background apps?
With all the focus on your browser, you may forget that other apps like Dropbox might be taking up precious bandwidth in the background. Close any and all of those you don't need to do your work, or put them into offline mode so they aren't constantly checking if they need to sync. Some apps may require some foresight for this to work: Notational Velocity and ResophNotes will work fine without a connection, for example, but Evernote will require you to go into its settings and download your notebooks before it'll work in offline mode.

When all else fails, find better Wi-Fi?
No one wants to rush around all day trying to find better Internet, but if what you're using is just too slow, look elsewhere. Free Wi-Fi is everywhere, and if at first you don't succeed, find a faster hotspot. You won't be able to do this all day if you have work to get done, but you should be able to find something that's somewhat workable for the time being.

Survivor says principal, others saved her in U.S. school rampage

NEWTOWN, Connecticut (Reuters) - A survivor of the elementary school massacre in Connecticut that killed 26 people said on Sunday the principal and two staff members had saved her and others' lives by warning that a gunman was in the building.

Becky Virgalla, a reading consultant at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, said she was in a meeting with Principal Dawn Hochsprung, school psychologist Mary Sherlach and other colleagues when the shooter broke into the building on December 14.

Hochsprung, Sherlach and lead teacher Natalie Hammond "went out in the hall to check out the noise that we didn't know that was gunshots at first," Virgalla told Reuters Television at a memorial where the names of the victims were written on wooden angels.

"The three of them were shot and they yelled back 'shooter, stay put.' And they saved my life and the life of four others who were at that meeting," she said.

The gunman, Adam Lanza, 20, shot dead 26 people at the school, including 20 young children, in the second-worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

Before attacking the school with a military-style assault rifle, Lanza shot and killed his mother at their home. He killed himself after the assault at the school.

Hochsprung, 47, and Sherlach, 56, were killed, and Hammond was wounded. Investigators have not disclosed a motive for Lanza's attack.

Virgalla had some advice for parents and teachers: make sure your doors lock from the inside.

"Ours did not and teachers had to go out. You can't be out in a hall when a shooter is present in your school. Just that simple thing could make a difference in time and safety of the children," she said.

The attack has galvanized the gun control debate in the United States, where the Constitution protects possession of firearms. President Barack Obama is expected to propose steps next month to tighten gun laws.

The head of the U.S. gun lobby, the National Rifle Association, defended his call for armed guards in all schools despite withering criticism of the group's response to the Newtown massacre.

Tips To Consider When Marketing Your Business Online | Jim ...

Mistakes Are Costing You! Learn To Stop?Making ALL 189 Of Them!

Struggling With WordPress? 100+ Step-By-Step Videos Now Available!

When you market and sell merchandise online, it is called web marketing or Online marketing. It can be complicated if you are new to Website marketing, but luckily for you there is a whole of host valuable information to help you get started in your Internet marketing venture.

You must determine what audience you want to reach; then you must figure out how to go about attracting that audience to your website. Now that you know who your target audience is, it will be easy to find the information that will encourage them to access your site time and again.

It may cost money to buy a domain name that you are happy with. Many of the good domain names are already taken, so you may not be able to get one that matches your company name. You can get any domain name you want if you have over a thousand dollars to spend. You should definitely weigh the pros and cons of this investment.

TIP! You can build a client list by using a squeeze page. Squeeze pages prompt visitors to provide their email.

Joining forces with a charity can help your business, increase your visibility and help the charity also. Choose a charity and give a set percent of your profits to that charity. This will give you free publicity, create good will and benefit your business and the charity. You can partner with more than a singular charity to give your costumer base a chance to choose which to support.

Be certain to make use of textual emphasis techniques as you plan your site?s layout. Tools like bold, italics, and underline are ways to make a word more important than the surrounding words. This can improve clarity and direct the focus of the reader.

Many people respond to titles. Don?t be afraid to let it be known that you are indeed the head honcho. Try labeling yourself as ?CEO? or ?President? of your business.

TIP! Current content is very important on your website. When people come to your website and see information that is dated, they think that the business is not performing and may be leery of initiating contact with you.

Don?t throw in the towel if you experience a few bumps on the road. Even if you are close to giving up do not do it! You may be so close to the prize. If you are designing a website, make sure you have done your research and are confident about the direction you are taking it in. At times, this can take a lot of effort. Keep your focus on your end result and realize that your hard work will pay off.

Let customers rate and review your products, and allow them to explain the reasons for their ratings. Providing honest feedback from consumers will help new potential customers have confidence in purchasing your products.

Remember your specific goals and stick with them. Determine the type of articles you wish to write and which directory you will be submitting them to. Directories have article requirements that you should be aware of. Write with these guidelines in mind to have the best submissions.

TIP! Make sure your customer can easily find a page on your website that accurately presents content about your product or service before they buy. This will allow them to feel educated about their potential purchase.

Change your headlines and add relevant content often. Keep a record of how those changes affect the traffic generated on your site. After you?ve found a tone that is particularly effective for your products and your customers, start employing it regularly and make all of your content consistent. This will pay off in the future with increased customer visits.

The key to any Online marketing campaign is knowing what works and doesn?t work for your competition. If you are aware of what they are selling and know you can do something a bit better, then you can be very profitable and surpass them in sales. This is a key component in Internet promotion.

Here is a great tip for successful website marketing. Make your landing page simple with a clear objective. Here you should focus on selling. They should know what they are selling when they get to that page. If they have to look around on your site for the information they want, they will likely leave more quickly.

TIP! It can be challenging to choose which direction to lead your business in and design the accompanying website. Start out broad and list interests and niches that are important to you.

Make sure you utilize social media. Facebook fan pages give clients as well as customers a place to give feedback that anyone can view. Twitter can allow you to communicate informally with your customers.

Now that you?ve learned a little more about marketing your business online, you should be able to formulate a plan. With successful Website marketing, you can sell goods and services to people from all over the world.

For cheap travel, avoid souvenirs

A truly special souvenir doesn?t need to cost very much, and the best ones are rarely found in an overpriced souvenir shop, Hamm writes.

By Trent Hamm,?Guest blogger / December 19, 2012

For me,?the best souvenirs are the memories.?I don?t really need physical things to recall my vacations, as I?ll just look at the digital pictures and my mind fills in the blanks.

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Of course, many people like to bring home physical items to remember their vacations by. Sarah takes this route with her souvenirs. She likes to have a physical object to remind her of where she once traveled.

It would be easy for Sarah to find a souvenir in a shop somewhere, but let?s be honest ? most of those souvenirs are drastically overpriced and often not very useful. Who wants to pay $20 for an ordinary t-shirt or something silly like that?

Instead, when she looks for a souvenir, she looks for something atypical, either something free or something without markup.?

Networking can benefit your business | Public Relations Sydney

Networking is like being your own personal billboard! It?s great for building business contacts, finding new clients, making connections in your industry and promoting your business.

Networking isn?t just about turning up to events; it?s about creating relationships and connections with other people. You never know who you might meet at an event that can help you or your business in some way.?

Here are some ways that networking can benefit your business.

It?s a great marketing tool
Networking is a great marketing tool for businesses with a tight budget. Networking events give you direct access to a room full of influential people in your industry. Simply by talking to these people you are essentially advertising to potential customers.

By having a conversation with other people at the event you can determine if they have a need for your business or services. The more people who are aware of your business means a greater number of people will contact you when the need arises.?

The cost of the event may be expensive but it is usually cheaper than hiring an advertising agency to promote your business.

Gaining new contacts
At networking events you might meet many like-minded people in various stages of their career. By talking to these people you can gain practical advice or inspiration to achieve your own goals.

Start creating connections with people at these events by asking for their business card and contacting them after the event.

Networking can be time consuming but extremely worthwhile when you make new connections or even begin a new friendship.

Educational experience
Some networking events may feel like a waste of time but you can learn something from every experience. For example you might learn a new tip or discover the type of networking events that are best for your business.

You can also learn new trends in the business community or even share your own knowledge with others.

Here are some tips to help you network at events:?

  • Network with potential clients: You should attend networking events that your potential clients or customers would attend. For example if your target market is small businesses, then participate in networking events for small business owners. Sometimes your local chamber of commerce will run these events.
  • Network with people in your industry: You can join industry specific networking groups, which are often run by the professional association you may belong to.
  • Go alone: To make the most of each networking event you should attend the event alone. That way you will be encouraged to talk to new people instead of the friends or colleagues that came with you. If you do bring a friend, split up and try to talk to different people. At the end of the event you can catch up with your friend and learn about the people they met.?
  • Make the first move: Don?t wait for someone to approach you at a networking event. Make the first move and introduce yourself to someone. Start by approaching a group of three or more people having a discussion. Often it?s easier to join a discussion with a larger group of people then approaching a discussion between two people.
  • Listen: Networking is about listening. Take the time to listen to other people and ask them about their business. That way you can determine if they have a need for your business or services.

Networking is one of the most important marketing tools for yourself and your business. You can never have too many contacts, so start attending events and making connections in your industry.

How has networking helped your business?

Instagram responds to outrage, tweaks privacy policy

8 hrs.

Instagram, faced with thousands of angry users upset by news that the popular app would let advertisers pick and choose among user-posted photos for ads, reversed course and?said late Tuesday it won't allow that.

The proposed change to the old-timey, photo-sharing service' privacy policy was announced Monday, with Instagram saying users had until Jan. 16 to voice their views. They didn't need that much time. It took way less than 24 hours.

"One of the main reasons these documents don?t take effect immediately, but instead 30 days from now, is that we wanted to make sure you had an opportunity to raise any concerns. You?ve done that and are doing that, and that will help us provide the clarity you deserve," said Kevin Systrom, Instagram co-founder, in a blog post?Tuesday.

"Instagram users own their content and Instagram does not claim any ownership rights over your photos. Nothing about this has changed."

Systrom also said that "the language we proposed also raised question about whether your photos can be part of an advertisement. We do not have plans for anything like this and because of that we?re going to remove the language that raised the question."

Privacy advocates and users were interpreting the dense legalese of Instagram's?proposed new policy?as permission for Instagram to use all?publicly?shared images like its stockpile of stock photos, farming out your bathroom mirror self-portraits, or whatever, to?advertisers?willing to pay. (Pay Facebook via Instagram ? not pay you and/or the photographer. Facebook recently bought Instagram.)

"Really,?Instagram? Purchased for $1B in inflated FB stock and you're going to start selling members' pictures? Street Artists best?leave?now," read one tweet of warning, as #BoycottInstagram began trending on Twitter.

"I came late to?Instagram, but I will?leave?early," noted another.

For what it's worth, Instagram wasn't claiming it owned your "Content" (with a capital "C"). It was just apparently?going to sell it like it did. As the original?new user agreement read:

Instagram does not claim ownership of any Content that you post on or through the Service. Instead, you hereby grant to Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license to use the Content that you post on or through the Service, except that you can control who can view certain of your Content and activities on the Service as described in the Service's Privacy Policy, available here:?http://instagram.com/legal/privacy/.

Users were given the option of deleting their accounts by Jan. 16.?After that, Instagram had said,?it's a done deal,?with no way to opt out. Also, photos that were?posted prior to Jan. 16 were to be?eligible for licensing by Instagram for?an amount of time not specified in the new privacy policy.?

As one Twitter user puts it, "I wish I had the strength to?leave?Instagram?... but I can't do it. No matter how badly it treats me."

Then again, at least some were seeing the bright side of staying: "I can understand why some people won't leave Instagram. Imagine the thrill of seeing your sandwich on somebody's billboard!"

Helen A.S. Popkin?goes?blah blah blah about Internet privacy, then asks you to follow her?on?Twitter?and/or?Facebook.?Also,?Google+.

Cy ya later: Mets trade Dickey to Blue Jays

NEW YORK (AP) ? Cy ya later.

R.A. Dickey and his nasty knuckleball are headed north of the border.

After weeks of speculation and then a weekend spent ironing out the last few details, the New York Mets finally traded the NL Cy Young Award winner to the Toronto Blue Jays in a seven-player swap Monday.

Toronto acquired the 38-year-old Dickey and catchers Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas. The Mets got top catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud and veteran catcher John Buck, plus minor league right-hander Noah Syndergaard and outfielder Wuilmer Becerra.

Earlier in the day, Dickey and the busy Blue Jays agreed to a new contract, clearing the way for New York to send him to a team that's spending a lot of money trying to join baseball's elite.

General manager Sandy Alderson said the Mets didn't completely decide to trade Dickey until they saw the final package that Toronto offered.

"This was a complicated deal," Alderson said on a conference call.

Dickey broke the news even before the teams did.

A few minutes ahead of the trade announcement, he tweeted his thanks to Mets fans and added he was all set to pitch for the Blue Jays.

"Now that it's official, I want to say that I don't have the words to express how grateful I am to you for the steadfast support," Dickey posted on Twitter. "Thank you for making me feel wanted."

"Looking forward to a new chapter with the Jays," he wrote.

Dickey was already signed for $5.25 million next year. His new contract adds two more seasons for $25 million ? he will get $12 million in both 2014 and 2015, plus there's a club option for 2016 at $12 million with a $1 million buyout.

Toronto has now acquired All-Stars Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, Melky Cabrera and Dickey since the season ended.

"We're just so close to contention," Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos said. "It's not just about one season. This allows us to put what we feel is a contending team together for an extended run, for a three- to five-year period."

Dickey needed to pass a physical before the teams announced the deal. He became the fourth pitcher to win the Cy Young and be traded before the next season, joining David Cone, Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens.

Alderson said the Mets' preference going into the offseason was to sign Dickey to a multiyear deal. But as the winter meetings approached in early December, Alderson said Dickey's value "in a possible trade was also sky-rocketing. At some point, those lines crossed."

Several teams made runs at a deal for Dickey, with Texas and the Los Angeles Angels among those in the mix. Alderson said while some clubs popped in and out of trade talks, Toronto's interest remained steady.

The Blue Jays have missed the playoffs since winning their second straight World Series crown in 1993, and have boldly moved to reshape a team that went 73-89 last season in the rugged AL East.

Dickey was 20-6 with a 2.73 ERA last season, capping his rapid rise from the majors' scrap heap to an ace pitcher. He did it by perfecting a way to throw his floater faster than previous knuckleballers, and tossing it with exceptional control.

"It was an extraordinary privilege for us to be part of his career," Alderson said. "The final chapter has not been written."

Dickey joins a stellar Toronto rotation that includes Johnson, Buehrle and returning starters Ricky Romero and Brandon Morrow.

"We clearly are convinced this can be a front-line starter for us," Anthopoulos said. "I don't think he gets the credit or the respect he deserves because of his age, and because of what he does throw. And I understand because it's so rare.

"But there's so much overwhelming data and evidence that points to him continuing to have this success."

Thole gives the Blue Jays a catcher who is familiar with handling Dickey's knuckleball, and Anthopoulos said that relationship was a key to the deal.

"R.A. is too important to our chances to take a chance and have a tryout camp to see if someone can catch him," he said.

Despite a big spot in the rotation to fill minus Dickey, Alderson said the Mets were not giving up on next season.

"We certainly are not punting on 2013," he said.

Alderson called d'Arnaud, who turns 24 in February, the top catching prospect in the minors and predicted he could contribute on the major league level next year. He hit .333 at Triple-A Las Vegas with 16 homers and 52 RBIs before tearing a knee ligament trying to break up a double play in June.

Popular with Mets fans, Dickey perturbed team management when he spoke about his contract situation last week during a club event at Citi Field for children displaced from their schools by Superstorm Sandy.

Dickey said he enjoyed playing for the Mets and added it would be "disappointing" if he went through his option year without a new deal and became a free agent.

"If that's the decision that they make, I feel like it would be unfortunate because it probably is going to mean that I'm not going to be back," Dickey said then. "And that would be sad."

Buck was an All-Star with Toronto in 2010. The 32-year-old hit .192 with 12 homers and 41 RBIs for Miami last season, then was part of the blockbuster trade between the Marlins and Blue Jays.

The 20-year-old Syndergaard went 8-5 with a 2.60 ERA for Class-A Lansing. The 18-year-old Becerra hit .250 with four RBIs in 11 games in the rookie Gulf Coast League.

Thole, 26, hit .234 with one homer and 21 RBIs in 104 games this year. The 29-year-old Nickeas split last season between the Mets and Triple-A Buffalo. He batted .174 with one homer and 13 RBIs for New York.

Fight to Know: California Voters Turn Down Label Requirements for Genetically Modified Products

Proposition 37, requiring the labeling of genetically modified foods, was defeated in a close election, but other anti-GM efforts continue

tomato and syringe FOOD FIGHT: Proposition 37, defeated by a narrow margin this past Election Day, called on food-makers to label products containing genetically modified ingredients--and to not label such foods as "natural." Image: Hemera Collection/Thinkstock

Dear EarthTalk: What was Proposition 37 in California that concerns the labeling of genetically modified foods and that was just voted down in that state?? Peter Tremaine, Euclid, Ohio

Many healthy food advocates were disheartened on Election Day when Californians rejected Proposition 37, which would have required the labeling of genetically modified (GM) foods across the state. GM foods have had genes from other plants or animals inserted into their genetic code to optimize for one or another trait, such as resistance to pests, better taste or longer shelf life, and are controversial because scientists don?t know the ramifications of mixing genetic codes on such a widespread scale.

While it was close, those against the so-called ?California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act? prevailed, with 53.1 percent of the vote. The proposition called on food manufacturers to label foods containing GM ingredients on the front or back of the packaging with the phrase ?partially produced with genetic engineering??and not to label or advertise such foods as ?natural.? Proponents developed the proposition in lieu of federal action requiring labeling of GM foods?as exists in 50 other countries.

Proponents of the bill raised some $9 million and garnered some 46.9 percent of the vote, indicating that upwards of four million Californians fear the potential effects of GM foods and are in favor of greater transparency on the part of the food industry. But such efforts weren?t enough to overcome aggressive marketing by so-called Big Food companies including Monsanto, Coca-Cola, ConAgra, Nestle and Kraft, who poured some $45 million into the ?No on 37? campaign.

Backers of the proposition are crying foul. Public health lawyer Michele Simon reports that some of the companies involved in defeating the bill engaged in lying, scare tactics, misrepresentation and various dirty tricks ?to protect their profits and keep California voters uninformed about their food choices.?

?The No campaign listed four organizations in the official state document mailed to voters as concluding that ?biotech foods are safe?,? she says. ?One of them, the American Council on Science and Health, is a notorious industry front group that only sounds legit. Another, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, actually has no position and complained about being listed?? The other two groups, the National Academy of Sciences and the World Health Organization, have more nuanced positions...than just ?safe.?

Simon also criticizes Big Food for its claims about high food costs, ?shakedown lawsuits? and ?special interest exemptions? if the law passed: ?While each of these claims is easily debunked, being outspent on ad dollars makes it hard to compete, especially when all you can really say is, ?that?s not true?.?

The battle over GM labeling in California may be over for now, but the war rages on nationally. Just Label It, a nonprofit started by Stonyfield Farm magnate Gary Hirshberg, is trying to persuade the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to require GM food labeling nationally. Readers can help by signing the campaign?s online petition. Beyond that, Just Label It recommends eating more fresh vegetables and unprocessed foods (the vast majority of processed foods in the U.S. contain either GM corn or soy) and looking for the USDA Organic label, which precludes any foods containing GM ingredients.
