95% Searching for Sugar Man

All Critics (84) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (80) | Rotten (4)

The search for a long-lost pop icon has an unexpected payoff.

[A] moving, lyrical account ...

Director Malik Bendjelloul's engaging, cleverly structured documentary about the legendary folk singer Rodriguez is shaped like a mystery.

If you like music, a good mystery or, better yet, a combination of both, you won't be disappointed.

An electrifying illustration of music's power to inspire and change lives on both sides of the footlights.

Submitted for your approval: one Sixto Rodriguez, a Mexican-American singer/songwriter whom Rod Serling would surely embrace, in or out of the Twilight Zone.

This is not only the best documentary I've seen this year, it's one that shows other documentaries how to do it.

Searching for Sugar Man reminds us that a wise man knows lasting riches are never the result of record sales.

Searching for Sugar Man" is a saga about the power of music, living life on one's own terms and the joy of second chances.

Two fans, Stephen Segerman and Craig Bertholomew, made it their business to find out exactly what happened to the singer Rodriguez. And, "Searching for Sugar Man" is the fruits of their labor. The fruit is tasting pretty sweet.

It starts as a bittersweet parable about the cruelty of commerce, but the wonder of "Searching for Sugar Man" will not soon slip away.

You watch "Searching for Sugar Man" at first fascinated by the mystery - what happened to Rodriguez? Where did he go? Then you become infuriated by its revelations of financial injustice.

An unexpectedly fresh nonfiction tale that rustles up deep feelings of a life stolen -- part docu-mystery, part uplifting valentine about the universality and resonating power of music.

Generates immediate interest in a forgotten artist, permitting the delicate yet barbed tunes to guide the experience, returning a sense of excitement to a man who unfortunately missed out on the highlights of his career.

It isn't that Searching for Sugar Man's plot developments are gotcha!-like, but this documentary does boast some bowl-you-over reveals best experienced blind.

Ultimately, for Rodriguez, musical redemption transcends the greed and soul-sapping breaks he encountered.

Rodriguez's life story is only part of what makes "Searching for Sugar Man" such a revelation.

The man and his music are worth checking out, even if the movie is not.

Ultimately an ode to Rodriguez's artistic modesty and the power of his music-a rousing crowd-pleaser that asks you to save questions for another film.

A rousing and all-encompassing look at a man who becomes even more of a mystery after we've gotten to know him.

Self Improvement: The Best Way To Achieve Pre-eminence ...

Do you want to make your life better in one way or another? Improving your life helps you to become a better person and helps your life be more fulfilling. No matter what changes you want to make or what you want to improve upon, personal improvement is a journey that many people find themselves on. When you are ready to take yourself on the journey to become a better person, the tips in this article can help.

When it comes to personal development, the most important strategy is to learn how to set Goals. It is okay to have big, long-term goals, but it is critical that you break down these big goals into much smaller goals. Define what steps you need to make in order to reach your larger goal. These small steps are each individual goals. If you are living in poverty, for example, and desire money, the large goal would be to have the financial means to live a comfortable lifestyle. Decide what steps it will take to make money. You would need a high paying job, right. To get a high paying job you probably will need a good education. So, your first goal would be to get an education, the next goal would be to have an entry level job and then the third goal would be to move up to a higher paying position. Breaking down large goals into smaller goals is the key to success. Congratulate and praise your self for each small goal that you reach, no matter how small. Never forget that the longest journey begins with a single step.

Spend time volunteering in your community. Helping others is one of the best ways to grow spiritually and emotionally. You can learn a lot when you work in service of others and you will, at the same time, be doing your part to make the world a better place.

Stress is something that can turn you into a person that you do not enjoy being. In order to eliminate this behavior, you should work on learning how to manage your stress. Stress is a normal part of life. Some of it can be eliminated, but a lot of it you have to learn to live with. There are a few things you can do to eliminate stress. You can step away from it and breathe deeply. While you are doing this, try visualizing the behavior that you want to exhibit. You can also add more exercise into your life. Exercise is one of life?s natural stress relievers.

Reflect on your days. At the end of each day, sit down and take time to think about what things went right in your life. How did you react and what things did you do that you were proud of? Also, think about the things in your day that went wrong. How did you respond to these things? What changes could you have made? How will you respond next time? By taking time to reflect on your day, you can find good things that you did, as well as things you need to improve upon.

If you feel like a group approach is for you, do some research on a group you intend to join to make sure they are able to be successful in focusing on and eventually reaching their goals. You do not want to join a group who is off task for a majority of the time and is full of people who are not serious about reaching their goals.

Following the advice you?ve read in this article will help you to become a better person. Personal development is not easy, but it is extremely rewarding.

Do you want to find ways to improve yourself today? Then read more about short meaningful quotes or learn more about quotes about being a single mother now.

Bill Clinton gets $2 billion in pledges to tackle world's woes

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Healthcare for athletes with mental disabilities, organic know-how for Indian farmers and solar technology for isolated communities were among the pledges made at former U.S. President Bill Clinton's philanthropic summit, which ended on Tuesday.

With its theme of "Designing for Impact" and an emphasis on improving the lives of women and girls in the developing world, heads of states, business leaders and humanitarians at the eighth annual Clinton Global Initiative made 150 new pledges valued at about $2 billion to tackle some of the world's woes.

The three-day summit, scheduled when world leaders are in New York for the annual United Nations General Assembly, also featured appearances from U.S. President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney, as well as Egypt's new Islamist president, Mohamed Mursi.

"I am convinced that cooperation, not conflict, will define this century," Clinton said.

The meeting is largely a networking opportunity for some of the world's power brokers to exchange ideas and forge partnerships. It also offers a chance for successful companies to highlight projects that demonstrate social responsibility.

On the opening day, Clinton asked Wal-Mart CEO Michael Duke if the company would consider opening a store in the Libyan capital of Tripoli. Duke noted the company has opened stores in some of the world's more troubled cities, but politely declined the suggestion.

The summit was also a family affair. Clinton introduced his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who made remarks. And their daughter Chelsea, a board member, moderated a session called "The Case for Optimism in the 21st Century."

The idea for the summit came from Clinton's frustration with attending conferences while he was president that prompted no action. When the initiative began, corporations tended to show up and write checks to fund humanitarian programs. Now many see philanthropy in terms of investment opportunities.

The pledges will impact 22 million people, the Clinton initiative said. Some of the commitments took the form of donations.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, Suntech Power Holdings and the GlobalECHO Foundation teamed up to install $250,000 worth of solar panels worth $250,000 at a hospital that treats victims of sexual violence.

"When you hear the stories of what they're dealing with, you can't not help them," said Andrew Beebe, Suntech's chief commercial officer.

New Poll Shows Most Sportsmen Tend To Be Environmentally-Minded

By Bob Marshall

A new poll released today reaffirms what previous research has pointed out for years: America's sportsmen strongly favor environmental protections over industrial development, regardless of their political affiliation.

The election-year poll, conducted by Chesapeake Consulting for the National Wildlife Federation, clearly targeted opinions of sportsmen based on their political affiliation. Responses to key fish, wildlife and environmental issues were divided by Republican, Democrat or Independent voters.

While the responses from Democratic sportsmen closely tracked their party's support for those protections in Congress, Republican sportsmen clearly broke with the GOP's recent agenda of rolling back fish and wildlife protections and programs.

Previous polls have returned much the same results, consistently showing sportsmen are national leaders in concerns for environmental protections, as well as early advocates for addressing climate change.

Key findings include:

? They strongly favor restoring Clean Water Act protections to wetlands and waterways.

? They think protection of America?s public lands should be given a priority, even at the risk of limiting the amount of energy supplies.

? They believe global warming is currently occurring and we have a moral responsibility to confront it.

? They overwhelmingly believe the economy can be strengthened and jobs created by investing in renewable energy while reducing global warming pollution.

? They believe fines paid by BP for the Deepwater Horizon disaster should be used to ensure the recovery of fish and wildlife populations in the Gulf of Mexico.

Chesapeake Consulting said of the 800 regularly-voting sportsmen who took the telephone poll, 42 percent indicated they were Republican, 32 percent Independent, and 18 percent Democrat. Of these, 27 percent indicated they split their ticket when voting.

Fifty percent consider themselves conservative, including 22 percent who consider themselves very conservative.

Sixty percent said they vote in every election, with an additional 21 percent indicating they vote in almost all elections.

See the full results of the poll here at 11 a.m.

Spending Time With the Kids by Getting Out of the House | Dadding

store1 300x300 What Kids, Parenting, and Best Buy all Have in CommonI grew up in a neighborhood where my parents could let all of us kids out of the house and into the neighborhood without many fears of bad things happening. My sisters and I all had friends up and down that street and we all got along and we all spent most of our days outside.

That doesn?t seem to be the case anymore. We can let Addie loose out into the circle and occasionally we let her walk two houses further to one of her friend?s houses, but for most of the time we have to be with Addie and Vivi when they want out of the house. Just as it is important that Casey get out of the house on occasion, it is probably even more important that our kids get out of the house as well. For both their sakes?and my sake.

Here?s what I have noticed during my stints as a temporary single parent over the past year. Taking the kids, especially Vivi, to the park or even just to the store makes parenting much easier. Sure, there?s the initial packing everything into a diaper bag and loading the kids into the car, which can be a nightmare for parents like me who don?t do the packing and loading thing all that often, but the rewards far outweigh that burden.

Deciding whether to pack up the kids or to sit at home trying to find activities is a pretty easy decision for me, because spending a full day one-on-one with just Vivi can be pretty difficult. The baby (alright, she?s a toddler but I don?t like admitting it) doesn?t like to play with her toys and she gets bored pretty easily, and there?s only so much Sesame Street that she can watch before I feel guilty for plopping her in front of the TV. There are all kinds of easy places that I can take this little one that aren?t even baby or kid oriented that will keep her fascinated and entertained. Using the afternoon to go to a local Best Buy without any real purpose other than to let Vivi play with all the cellphones has been a great way to keep Vivi entertained and to give me some relief from trying to constantly entertain her. Plus, I get to daydream about the TV I have been promising myself for the last three years that I will eventually buy and put in my family?s loft (or my bedroom).

I?ve also taken the kid to Walmart so we can take a walk down the Oreo Cookie aisle followed by a little stop in the toy aisles. It has always worked like a charm and Vivi comes away entertained and I usually end up with Oreo Cookies, that?s what we call a win/win. (Unless those Oreo Cookies are the new Candy Corn Oreos, those aren?t nearly as good as I expected them to be.)

The Best Buy strategy hasn?t always worked with Addie however, because she isn?t interested in playing with all the cellphones at Best Buy. She already knows the cellphones at the store aren?t toys and she doesn?t care about the latest and greatest in TV land. In fact, she hates going to what she calls the ?daddy store.? When that happens I just adjust and we take a trip to a pet shop, the Humane Society, or a Halloween store. Addie gets some time out of the house and away from the TV, and I get to decide which mask I?m going to secretly buy so I can scare the crap out of Addie when I wake her up for school on Halloween morning.

Long-term outcomes after RP as first-line therapy for men with cT3 ...

Posted on by Sitemaster

We have no data from randomized trials on the relative effectiveness of surgery compared to radiation therapy in the treatment of men initially diagnosed with clinical stage T3NxM0 prostate cancer. However, we do now have data from > 800 men treated with radical prostatectomy (RP) and followed for up to 23 years at the Mayo Clinic.

Mitchell et al. conducted a retrospective analysis of data on the thousands of men treated by radical prostatectomy at the Mayo Clinic between 1987 and 1997. Based on that analysis, they offer the following information:

  • 843 men were treated by first-line radical prostatectomy alone after a diagnosis of clinical stage T3NxM0 disease.
  • Average (median) post-surgical follow-up was 14.3 years (range 0.1 to 23.5 years).
  • 223/843 patients (26.5 percent) were found to have pathological T2N0M0 disease post-surgery.
  • At an estimated follow-up of 20 years (based on Kaplan-Meier methodology)
    • Local recurrence-free survival for all patients was 76 percent.
    • Systemic progression-free survival for all patients was 72 percent.
    • Prostate cancer-specific survival for all men 81 percent.
  • On multivariate analysis, an increased risk for prostate cancer-specific mortality was evident in men with
    • Higher pathological Gleason scores (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.8)
    • Non-diploid chromatin content (HR = 1.8)
    • Positive surgical margins (HR = 2.1)
    • Seminal vesicle invasion (HR = 2.1)
  • A more recent year of surgery was associated with a decreased risk of cancer-specific mortality (HR = 0.88).

Mitchell et al. conclude that:

  • ?RP affords accurate pathological staging and may be associated with durable cancer control for cT3 prostate cancer, with 20 years of follow-up.?
  • ?RP as part of a multimodal treatment strategy therefore remains a viable treatment option for patients with cT3 tumors.?

However, they are also careful to note that external beam radiation therapy in combination with androgen deprivation therapy offers 10-year progression-free survival among about 88 percent of men when given as first-line therapy for men initially diagnosed with cT3 disease. The combination of radiation therapy and ADT may well (therefore) be the most appropriate form of treatment for older men initially diagnosed with cT3 disease.

The bottom line is that for those men with what may be the earliest stages of cT3 disease on diagnosis (and who may therefore turn out to have pT2 disease post-surgery) ? and particularly for younger men who may be able to recover well after radical prostatectomy ? surgery is still a very appropriate form of first-line treatment that can always be followed later with adjuvant or salvage radiation therapy (with or without ADT, as necessary). Careful patient selection and a thorough discussion of the risks and benefits of such an approach are clearly key factors in the application of such a clinical strategy.

Bone marrow holds secrets for treating colitis and Crohn's

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Michigan State University researchers have unlocked secrets in bone marrow that could lead to improved treatments for colitis and Crohn's disease.

The results, featured in the current issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of the Sciences, show that the havoc inflammatory bowel diseases wreaks on the digestive tract is mirrored in bone marrow. Early indications also show that the disorders of the gut could potentially be treated through the bone marrow, said Pam Fraker, MSU University Distinguished Professor of biochemistry and molecular biology.

"It's possible that if we could reduce bone marrow's ability to produce inflammatory cells that we could reduce the severity of colitis and Crohn's disease," said Fraker, who co-authored the study with MSU colleagues Laura McCabe, professor of physiology and radiology, and Mark Trottier, research specialist. "This could limit the damage that the disease causes and reduce the number of patients needing surgery."

Colitis and Crohn's affect more than a million people in the United States, including a growing number of children. There are no preventive treatments; however, steroids are often prescribed to reduce the diseases' pain and inflammation. The side effect of this course is tissue damage, which could lead to surgery and additional complications.

Watching a young patient suffer through the pain of severe colitis bolstered Fraker's need to research this devastating disease.

"She was very frail, sick, addicted to narcotics to numb her pain and had several intestinal surgeries to no avail," Fraker said. "This became a huge motivator for me as it drove home how little real help is available to these patients."

Fraker focused on bone marrow, which is a large, highly active and responsive tissue. When colitis was induced in mice, she was surprised by the significant and swift changes that occurred in their bone marrow. The symptoms of colitis, such as swelling, anemia and unhealthy increases in monocytes and neutrophils, (cells that fight infection but exacerbate the excessive swelling in intestines) were reflected in the bone marrow.

The bone marrow's reactions actually fan the flames of the inflammatory bowel diseases rather than help cure it. When bone marrow amps up production of monocytes and neutrophils, it does it at the expense of making lymphocytes and red blood cells, keys to immune defense.

The research was funded in part by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation.

Chaldean Church Bombed in North Iraq

Posted GMT 9-22-2012 17:10:5

Kirkuk, Iraq -- At least 150 young people, joined by other faithful, spent today in prayer and fasting to overcome violence, after a bomb exploded in front of the Chaldean cathedral.

On Sunday, September 16 (see photo), a bomb hidden in a bag exploded at 20.45 at the door of the Cathedral of Kirkuk, while Benedict XVI concluded his visit to Lebanon. The Chaldean archbishop, Msgr. Louis Sako, was in Beirut to receive from the pope's hands the apostolic exhortation Ecclesia in Medio Oriente. The Pope's visit to Lebanon coincided with widespread tension in the Islamic world, resulting from an anti-Islam film, deemed blasphemous against Muhammad.

The explosion in front of the Chaldean cathedral caused only material damage. Since September 21 was appointed an International Day of Peace, a group of young people launched day of fasting on Saturday, a holiday in Iraq, asking for peace in the city of Kirkuk and across the country. The day also had moments of prayer. Speaking to young people, the archbishop said the Church in Iraq, is according to the word's of St Paul: "... afflicted, but not crushed" (2 Cor 4:8). And he praised the idea of combining prayer and fasting, according to the teaching of the Gospel, in which Jesus says that some demons "can not be driven out except by prayer and fasting" (cf. Matthew 17:20). The 150 young people, together with other believers ended the day by participating in the Eucharist together.

WHY IT MATTERS: Global warming

The issue:

People love to talk about the weather, especially when it's strange like the mercifully ended summer of 2012. This year the nation's weather has been hotter and more extreme than ever, federal records show. Yet there are two people who aren't talking about it, and they both happen to be running for president.

___

Where they stand:

In 2009, President Barack Obama proposed a bill that would have capped power plant carbon dioxide emissions and allowed trading of credits for the right to emit greenhouse gases, but the measure died in Congress. An international treaty effort failed. Obama since has taken a different approach, treating carbon dioxide as a pollutant under the law. He doubled auto fuel economy standards, which will increase the cost of cars but save drivers money at the pump. He's put billions of stimulus dollars into cleaner energy.

Mitt Romney's view of climate change has varied. In his book "No Apology," he wrote, "I believe that climate change is occurring" and "human activity is a contributing factor." But on the campaign trail last year he said, "We don't know what's causing climate change on this planet." He has criticized Obama's treatment of coal power plants and opposes treating carbon dioxide as a pollutant and the capping of carbon dioxide emissions, but favors spending money on clean technology. Romney says some actions to curb emissions could hurt an already struggling economy.

___

Why it matters:

It's worsening. In the U.S. July was the hottest month ever recorded and this year is on track to be the nation's warmest. Climate scientists say it's a combination of natural drought and man-made global warming. Each decade since the 1970s has been nearly one-third of a degree warmer than the previous one.

Sea levels are rising while Arctic sea ice was at a record low in September. U.S. public health officials are partially blaming unusually hot and dry weather for an outbreak of the deadly West Nile virus that is on pace to be the worst ever. Scientists blame global warming for more frequent weather disasters, with the World Health Organization saying: "Climatic changes already are estimated to cause over 150,000 deaths annually." Others put the toll lower.

Emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels are trapping more of the sun's heat on Earth. One study showed that 97 percent of the scientists who publish about climate in peer-reviewed journals say global warming is man-made. So do just about every major science society and institution that has weighed in.

But limiting carbon dioxide emissions from coal and oil would be costly, with billions of dollars in changes to the U.S. economy only a starting point. Similarly the price of not doing anything is extraordinarily high because of costly and deadly extreme weather. People will pay either way in taxes, energy prices, insurance premiums, disaster relief, food prices, water bills and changes to our environment that are hard to put a price tag on, says MIT economist Henry Jacoby.

A NASA study this year found the most extreme type of weather, which statistically should happen on less than 0.3 percent of the Earth at any given time, is now more common. Until recently, the most extreme year was in 1941 when extremes covered 2.7 percent of the globe. From 2006 to 2011 about 10 percent of the globe had that extreme weather, with a peak of 20 percent, the study said. That was before this year's record extremes started.

The issue of man-made global warming is "totally missing" from the campaign between Obama and Romney, says Jacoby. It should be talked about, he says, because "we're running a serious risk of passing a much-damaged planet to our descendants."

Weird News: Should Housewives Earn A Salary? | YourTango

housewife
If only he paid me for this...

A proposed law in India would make husbands pay their wives for homemaking.

It's long been said that hiring a person (or people) to cook, clean, nanny/teach a kid to read, pay household bills, shop and have sex would cost a pretty penny. And seemingly, only super villains and Brangelinas have the kind of foresight and cash to hire those several people. However, dear friends, a house spouse (let us not give husbands who work from the home short thrift) does all of these jobs and is NOT on anyone's payroll.

That may change soon on the opposite side of Earth, as an Indian governmental department (the Union Women and Child Development Ministry) is drafting legislation that would make it mandatory for a husband to dole out a fixed percentage of his salary to his wife to compensate her for her homemaking efforts. Indeed, the position of wife, mother and housekeeper will henceforth be referred to as a "home engineer" and could earn her something to the tune of 10-20 percent of the husband's check.

Our buds at Care2.com address, or at the very least reference the existence of, the myriad of logistical issues and unintended consequences of this seemingly noble effort. Indeed, they ask if the scheme is "ingenious or insulting," assuming that it's a binary situation. Perhaps the term "noble effort" is somewhat patronizing. Perhaps the term "patronizing" is condescending. Perhaps the term "condescending" is overwrought. Perhaps I'm over-thinking this.

Another country that some people might consider "male-dominated" has begun using legislation to implement a being-nicer-to-your-wife ethos. In Japan, a man's pension was once off-limits as divorce winnings, but recent reforms have changed that presumption and will possibly make those ineffectual dudes a little kinder. Since "for free" connotes "for granted," and "getting what you pay for" is at the least a global truism, maybe this will foster some greater appreciation between the sexes in India.?

What do you think of taking a mandatory percentage out of a worker's (any gender) salary to pay an at-home spouse?

Tasting Like Chicken

120907_FOOD_Chicken

At least once a week, someone tells me that some food other than chicken ?tastes like chicken.? People throw the analogy around constantly. Virtually any meat that is pale in color, firm in texture, and lacking a strong flavor is subjected to the chicken comparison.

Why chicken? It?s probably at least in part because most of us haven?t eaten very many types of meat. The meat universe of a typical American carnivore is limited to chicken, turkey, beef, pork, and perhaps lamb. That?s a pretty narrow selection in a world that includes more than 10,000 species of birds?let alone the rest of the vertebrate world. (And saying that things ?taste like chicken,? it appears, is a distinctly American habit.)

The range of species I?ve heard compared to chicken, flavor-wise, is very broad across the evolutionary spectrum: various birds, of course, but also snakes, lizards, small mammals, certain fish. Which made me wonder: Can we trace the taste of chicken back down the evolutionary tree to a common ancestor? What was the first creature in evolutionary history that tasted like chicken? And for how long in the Earth?s history has life been tasting like chicken? Something had to come first, and I don?t think it was either the chicken or the egg.

In order to answer this question, we need to start with chickens and work our way back through the evolutionary family tree.

Does chicken taste like chicken? Don?t laugh?this is an important question. Even lifelong chicken eaters usually have a very narrow experience because the birds sold in grocery stores are usually one of a very few breeds that have been designed to grow a lot of breast meat very quickly in factory-farm settings. A Plymouth roasting hen slaughtered for market at 7 weeks does not make for the same eating experience as a 2-year-old Rhode Island Red. I once ate a bantam rooster that tasted more like iguana than a grocery store chicken.

I posed a question for a group of friends on Facebook, asking them whether they thought Cornish game hens taste like chicken. Some of the respondents were adamant that the little birds have their own flavor and texture that hardly resembles chicken. What I didn?t mention when I asked the question was the fact that Cornish game hens are simply ordinary chickens slaughtered at a younger age. Our idea of what chicken tastes like seems to be as informed by our expectations as by our palate.

A consensus has emerged in the scientific community that chickens and other birds are probably the direct descendants of dinosaurs. I have lost many good nights of sleep wondering what various species of dinosaurs tasted like, but the fact is that we don?t have any left to eat. Other than birds, the closest living relatives that we have to eat are the crocodilians, which date back to at least 250 million years ago.

I have eaten alligators on several occasions and have found that they can have a lot in common with chicken. Like chickens, their muscles are primarily light meat, which is made of muscle fibers that are well-suited for short-term bursts of speed and power. Tail meat tends to be somewhat tough (except in a very young animal), while the limbs are more tender. The best alligator meat I have ever eaten was in a bar on the Gulf Coast of Florida, where the bartender brought out a tray of ?gator wings.? These alligator limbs had been prepared identically to conventional Buffalo wings, and they tasted exactly like enormous Buffalo wings, with the most noticeable difference being that the bones were less delicate. I figure this similarity dates the taste of chicken back at least 250 million years right there. (This is assuming, of course, that the crocodilians of yesteryear didn?t taste terribly dissimilar from the alligators of today.)

Looking back even further on the evolutionary tree, modern reptiles are related to chickens through a group of animals known as diapsids, which originated around 300 million years ago. Modern snakes and lizards are both descended from the diapsids?and as it happens, I have had the pleasure of eating a nice assortment of them: black spiny-tailed iguanas, green iguanas, and various snakes. What all of them had in common was a taste and a color after cooking that was like chicken, coupled with a texture reminiscent of crab meat. You wouldn?t mistake the texture of snake for chicken, but run it through a meat-grinder, and you wouldn?t know the difference.

Another group of animals related to diapsids are the testudines: turtles and tortoises. Their exact evolutionary origins are murky, but what?s clear is that they taste like chicken. Raw snapping turtle meat is multicolored, with individual chunks mottled either red or white. But cooked, snapping turtle is indistinguishable from chicken to most palates. My 8-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son have enjoyed battered, deep-fried ?turtle tenders,? and they have deemed the meat identical to chicken. (I agree.) If it passes the taste test of a fussy 8-year-old, it probably really does taste like chicken. (Maybe the ranch dressing helped.)
