The answer is pretty simple: Yes they can but whenever you involve humans and emotions, most time things are never ?simple.? I know you?re probably thinking how? After all, a relationship involves 2 individuals being together and enjoying each other?s companionship within close proximity of each other right?

True, however some of the best relationships are not only from couples who live 10 minutes from each other, but maybe different states and even different countries away.

How do they ?survive? that relationship? I mean aren?t they worried that the other person would cheat on them? The bottom line ultimately comes down to this 5 letter word that gets tossed around often and some take for granted: trust.

In my opinion, the number one fear when it comes to a long distance relationship is the fact that they feel that the other person will cheat on them. This fear comes from personal insecurities and also from our wonderful friends and family who mean well when they want to advise us in our relationships but don?t realize that they?re ultimately planting a negative seed in our minds.

People need to realize that if a person is going to cheat, it doesn?t matter if they are 10 miles away or 10,000 miles away. You have husbands that live in the same house as their wives and still manage to cheat.

Well it all comes back to this 1 word: trust. How much do you trust your partner? How much do you trust yourself to remain faithful and lastly, how much do you trust in your relationship itself?

Long distance relationships take a lot of work. More work than a ?regular? relationship, which also may be another reason that turns people off about them. It?s taking the extra effort to make your relationship work is what many people don?t want; To be put in that position where they might have to adjust their schedule to fit talking to their partner on Skype or on the phone because they are in a different time zone. Or having to use up all their vacation time at work to go see their partner because they are in a different state or country.

Not to mention the amount of money spent on phone calls, plane/bus tickets, packages being sent cross country, etc. Yes, your expenses just got that much higher but at the end of the day, will it all be worth it? If you can truly find it in your heart to say yes, then why not go for it?

After all absence does make the heart grow fonder and you?ll come to love and appreciate your partner more the longer you two are apart anyway.

ScienceDaily (Mar. 21, 2012) ? Addressing a half-decade-old debate, engineers at Stanford have positively identified the presence of plasmons, the collective oscillations of electrons, in individual metal particles as small as one nanometer in diameter. The discovery could impact nanotechnology.

The physical phenomenon of plasmon resonances in small metal particles has been apparent for centuries. They are visible in the vibrant hues of the great stained-glass windows of the world. More recently, plasmon resonances have been used by engineers to develop new, light-activated cancer treatments and to enhance light absorption in photovoltaics and photocatalysis.

"The stained-glass windows of Notre Dame Cathedral and Stanford Chapel derive their color from metal nanoparticles embedded in the glass. When the windows are illuminated, the nanoparticles scatter specific colors depending on the particle's size and geometry " said Jennifer Dionne, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at Stanford and the senior author of a new paper on plasmon resonances to be published in the journal Nature.

In the study, the team of engineers report the direct observation of plasmon resonances in individual metal particles measuring down to one nanometer in diameter, just a few atoms across.

"Plasmon resonances at these scales are poorly understood," said Jonathan Scholl, a doctoral candidate in Dionne's lab and first author of the paper. "So, this class of quantum-sized metal nanoparticles has gone largely under-utilized. Exploring their size-dependent nature could open up some interesting applications at the nanoscale."

The research could lead to novel electronic or photonic devices based on excitation and detection of plasmons in these extremely small particles, the engineers said.

"Alternatively, there could be opportunities in catalysis, quantum optics, and bio-imaging and therapeutics," added Dionne.

Longstanding debate

The science of tiny metal particles has perplexed physicists and engineers for decades. As metallic particles near about 10 nanometers in diameter, classical physics breaks down. The particles begin to demonstrate unique physical and chemical properties that bulk counterparts of the very same materials do not. A nanoparticle of silver measuring a few atoms across, for instance, will respond to photons and electrons in ways profoundly different from a larger particle or slab of silver.

By clearly illustrating the details of this classical-to-quantum transition, Scholl and Dionne have pushed the field of plasmonics into a new realm that could have lasting consequences for catalytic processes such as artificial photosynthesis, for cancer research and treatment, and even quantum computing.

"Particles at this scale are more sensitive and more reactive than bulk materials," said Dionne. "But we haven't been able to take full advantage of their optical and electronic properties without a complete picture of the science. This paper provides the foundation for new avenues of nanotechnology entering the 100-to-10,000 atom regime."

Noble metals

In recent years, engineers have paid particular attention to nanoparticles of the noble metals: silver, gold, palladium, platinum and so forth. These metals are well known to support localized surface plasmon resonances in larger particles. Plasmons are the collective oscillation of electrons at the metal surface in response to light or an electric field.

Additionally, other important physical properties can be driven when plasmons are constrained in extremely small spaces, like the nanoparticles Dionne and Scholl studied, a phenomenon known as quantum confinement.

Depending on the shape and size of the particle, therefore, quantum confinement can dominate a particle's electronic and optical response. This research allows scientists, for the first time, to directly correlate a quantum-sized plasmonic particle's geometry -- its shape and size -- with its plasmon resonances.

Standing to benefit

Nanotechnology stands to benefit from this new understanding. Medical science, for instance, has devised a way to use nanoparticles excited by light to burn away cancer cells, a process known as photothermal ablation. Metal nanoparticles are affixed with molecular appendages called ligands that attach exclusively to chemical receptors on cancerous cells. When irradiated with infrared light, the plasmons begin to resonate and the metal nanoparticles heat up, burning away the cancerous cells while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue unaffected. The use of smaller nanoparticles in these therapies might improve their accuracy and the effectiveness, particularly since they can be more easily integrated into cells.

There is great promise for such small nanoparticles in catalysis, as well. The greater surface-area-to-volume ratios offered by atomic-scale nanoparticles could could significantly improve catalyic rates and efficiencies and provide advances in water-splitting and artificial photosynthesis, yielding clean and renewable energy sources from artificial fuels.

Aiding and abetting

The researchers' ability to observe plasmons in particles of such small size was abetted by the powerful, multi-million dollar environmental scanning transmission electron microscope (E-STEM) installed recently at Stanford's Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering, one of just a handful of such microscopes in the world.

E-STEM imaging was used in conjunction with electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) -- a research technique that measures the change in an electron's energy as it passes through a material -- to determine the shape and behavior of individual nanoparticles. Combined, STEM and EELS allowed the team to address many of the ambiguities of previous investigations.

"With this new microscope, we can resolve individual atoms within the nanoparticle," said Dionne, "and we can directly observe these particles' quantum plasmon resonances."

Ai Leen Koh, a research scientist at the Stanford Nanocharacterization Laboratory, and co-author of the paper, noted: "Even though plasmons can be probed using both light and electrons, electron excitation is advantageous in that it allows us to image the nanoparticle down to the atomic level and study its plasmon resonances at the same time."

Scholl added, "Someday, we might use this microscope to watch reactions in progress to better understand and optimize them."

Elegant and versatile

The researchers concluded by explaining the physics of their discovery through an elegant and versatile analytical model based on well-known quantum mechanical principles.

"Technically speaking, we've created a relatively simple, computationally light model that describes plasmonic systems where classical theories have failed," said Scholl.

"This paper represents fundamental research. We have clarified what was an ambiguous scientific understanding and, for the first time, directly correlated a particle's geometry with its plasmonic resonance for quantum-sized particles," summarized Dionne. "And this could have some very interesting, and very promising, implications and applications."

New York Times Co said on Tuesday it will halve the number of free articles readers can view on its NYTimes.com site.

Starting in April visitors to the website will be able to read up to 10 free articles a month, down from 20 free articles previously. The change comes one year after launching the paid digital subscription, which now has 454,000 paid subscribers.

The Times, like other U.S. newspaper publishers, has been struggling with sinking advertising sales and dwindling print subscribers and has focused on improving its digital strategy to replace the lost revenue.

The company started 2012 without a CEO or a digital boss after former CEO Janet Robinson and former digital head Martin Nisenholtz retired.

Chairman and Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr., who is also interim chief executive, said on February 2 The New York Times was in the early stages of searching for an executive with digital and brand-building experience to help guide its long-term growth strategy.

The focus on an improved digital strategy helped circulation revenue grow 5 percent to $241.6 million in the fourth quarter, The Times said.

Haha.. I got lost!

I was looking for a place called LG2 Auto Station in the middle of Congressional Avenue Extention. ?It was a very hot day, thank goodness I was headed for a tea place. ?I was pretty much almost the last person to arrive at the NAI CHA bloggers preview, food and drink tasting.

The program immediately started after I arrived with Ms. Anne Bernardo, Mr. Larry Castillo (LGZ Auto Station) and Ms. Josephine Floresca (NaiCha) greeting the participants and giving a brief orientation about NaiCha and how it started.

NaiCha Milk tea first started selling its ice blended milk tea with gummy jelly pearls in December of 2010 at its main store located across Royal Duty Free mall with top selection of fresh tea leaves like black and oolong tea as its main ingredients.

I am a tea drinker, actually I am now writing this post drinking Heladiv?s pure ceylon tea. ?I enjoy a good tea like I enjoy blogging. ?And getting the opportunity to taste all the flavors of NaiCha?s Milk Tea is going to be a worthwhile experience for me. ?And I was right, NaiCha?s tea drinks are worth the travel from Paco to Congressional on hot and humid Saturday afternoon.

An explosives expert works on a World War II bomb discovered on a building site in Marseille's harbor.

French officials evacuated 1,500 residents from their homes in Marseille, in the south of France, on Sunday after discovering a live bomb that was placed there by Germans during World War II, LaProvence.com reported. ?

The bomb was discovered by builders working on a retirement home construction site, The Riviera Times reported. The bomb, wrapped with a cable and pillows to absorb any potential shock, was gently lifted for fear that it might explode.

Neutralizing the bomb took 40 minutes. Deactivating the bomb was a delicate process, one that LaProvence.com detailed in a minute-by-minute account.

The massive bomb, which took up the better part of a moving truck, was transported Sunday afternoon to Canjuers military camp, where it will be destroyed, LaProvence.com reported.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Charges against an American soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians are expected to be filed within a week and if the case goes to court the trial will be held in the United States, said a legal expert with the U.S. military familiar with the investigation.

Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales is suspected of leaving a U.S. base in southern Afghanistan, entering homes and gunning down nine children, four men and three women before dawn on March 11. Bales, a 38-year-old married father of two from Lake Tapps, Washington, is currently being held at a U.S. military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

The shootings have further strained ties between the U.S. government and President Hamid Karzai who has accused the U.S. military of not cooperating with a delegation he appointed to investigate the killings in Panjwai district of Kandahar province. The Afghan investigative team also is not convinced that one soldier could have single-handedly left his base, walked to two villages, shot and killed 16 civilians and set fire to some of their bodies.

Syed Mohammad Azeen, a tribal elder from Balandi village, said Sunday in Kandahar that he and other villagers believe more than a dozen soldiers were involved. Other villagers said they saw 16 to 20 U.S. troops in the villages. It's unclear whether the soldiers the villagers saw were part of a search party that left the base to look for Bales, who was reported missing.

Allegations that 16 to 20 people were involved in the killings are "completely false," according to a U.S. official familiar with the case, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation.

Karzai seemed to endorse the skepticism about the U.S. account of a single shooter when he met with relatives of the victims in Kabul on Friday in a meeting covered by the news media. He recounted a story from one of the families about women and children being killed in four different rooms of a house, dragged into one room and lit on fire.

"That, one man cannot do," said Karzai.

Many other officials and villagers have said it seemed impossible for a single soldier to carry out the attacks in both villages ? one 1 kilometer north of the base and the other 1.5 kilometers south of the base. But the timeline is unclear. Some villagers have said the attacks, which they claim started around 2:30 a.m., occurred at separate times over an hour. Others have said attacks occurred simultaneously in the two villages.

In an attempt to prove there was only one perpetrator involved in the shootings, the U.S. military has shown Afghan officials footage from a surveillance video that shows a soldier walking up to the base, laying down his weapon and raising his arms in surrender.

Karzai said Friday that the video, which was shot by an aerial blimp above the base, was "not convincing" and accused the U.S. of not cooperating with Afghan investigators.

The legal expert, who also spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the case, insisted that there had been good cooperation between U.S. and Afghan investigative teams and that Afghan officials had provided important evidence for the case.

The military denied the Afghan team's request to interview Bales because that would have violated his rights as an accused in the case, the U.S. official said.

The expert also said that U.S. officials were discussing the best way to compensate the relatives of the victims and those wounded.

Military officials have said that there were no operations being conducted in the immediate area around the time of the pre-dawn killings. Helicopter noises that villagers heard could have been Medevac choppers called in to evacuate five Afghan civilians injured in the shootings, the official said.

Three of the injured who were flown to Kandahar Air Field were under 10, the official said. It was the second time that one of the children had been treated at the air field for a gunshot wound, the official said.

Villagers from the area also have alleged that women were sexually assaulted during the rampage.

The U.S. official said there was no evidence at this time that any of the women were raped.

Azeen, the trial elder, agreed, saying "Whoever is saying that should be ashamed."

The legal expert said charges were still being decided and that the location for any trial had not yet been determined. If the suspect is brought to trial, it is possible that Afghan witnesses and victims would be flown to the United States to participate, he said.

He declined to disclose details about the investigation, which is being conducted by the Army Criminal Investigation Division.

Army Brig. Gen. Lewis Boone, director of public affairs for the U.S.-led coalition and American forces in Afghanistan, called the shooting spree a "terrible and horrendous act," but said the U.S. military could not jeopardize the case by disclosing details of the investigation.

"I cannot over emphasize enough how important it is in the U.S. judicial system that the facts of the case, the evidence and the circumstances are safeguarded to ensure proper judicial process," Boone said. "Whether you are an Afghan or an American, I think you'll agree that the most important thing at the end of the day is that justice be done."

In Washington, Afghanistan's ambassador to the United States said Sunday that he believes the alleged shooter will be brought to justice.

But Eklil Hakimi indicated that relations between the two nations have been frayed by the shootings and violent protests across Afghanistan that broke out after Qurans were burned at a U.S. military base. The two nations also are engaged in tense negotiations on a strategic partnership agreement that will govern the U.S. footprint in the country after most combat forces pull out by the end of 2014.

The ambassador told CNN's "State of the Union" that Afghanistan was working to define its relationship with the U.S. for the years to come, but acknowledged that "down the road, it's a bumpy road."

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's Treasury chief says he is planning to loosen restrictions on Sunday trading during this summer's London Olympics.

By law, large stores in England and Wales can only open for six hours on Sundays, but Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne says restrictions will be lifted during the Olympic and Paralympic games.

He said Sunday that with hundreds of thousands of people visiting Britain for the sports extravaganza, "it would be a great shame ... if the country had a 'closed for business' sign on it."

Opposition Labour Party treasury spokesman Ed Balls says he wouldn't want to see the change become permanent.

The 2012 London Olympics run July 27-Aug. 12 and the Paralympics Aug. 29-Sept. 9.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A founder of the Roc-A-Fella record label has pleaded guilty in New York to marijuana distribution charges.

Kareem Burke entered the plea Thursday in federal court in Manhattan. Burke started the hip-hop label with Jay-Z and Damon Dash in the 1990s. The 38-year-old was arrested in October 2010 along with more than 50 other people in raids targeting a wholesale marijuana ring in New York and Florida.

Authorities seized nearly $2 million and more than 360 pounds of marijuana in the probe. The government said a raid on Burke's residence in North Bergen, N.J., produced the remains of a marijuana growing operation and $15,000 in cash.

Burke faces five to six years in prison at a May 18 sentencing.
