(AP) ? A violent storm formed over the prairie west of Oklahoma City late Friday afternoon, dropped a tornado in a suburb and rolled into the state capital as viewers brave enough to remain above ground watched on statewide television. State troopers reported a number of injuries.

Storm chasers with cameras in their car transmitted video showing a number of funnels dropping from the supercell thunderstorm as it passed south of El Reno and into Oklahoma City just south of downtown. Police urged motorists to leave the crosstown Interstate 40 and seek a safe place.

The scene was eerily like that from last week, when blackened skies generated a top-of-the-scale EF5 storm with 210 mph winds, killing 24 people at Moore, on Oklahoma City's south side. Friday's storms were moving just to the north of Moore and appeared not to be as strong as last week's storm.

"They're just tooling around right now. They're starting to dissipate a little bit," said Nick Mosley, who works at the Love's Travel Stop in El Reno. Motorists packed the store as the storm approached.

At Will Rogers World Airport southwest of Oklahoma City, passengers were directed into underground tunnels and inbound and outbound flights were canceled.

Damage was reported in Canadian County, immediately to the west of the capital city, and television cameras showed debris falling from the sky and power transformers being knocked out by high winds.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said a number of motorists were injured and that a few were missing. Numerous vehicles were damaged, leaving motorists stranded on the sides of roads, Trooper Betsy Randolph said.

As the storm bore down on suburban Oklahoma City, Adrian Lillard, 28, of The Village, went to the basement of her mother's office building with a friend, her nieces, nephews and two dogs.

"My brother's house was in Moore, so it makes you take more immediate action," Lillard said while her young nieces played on a blanket on the floor of the parking garage. "We brought toys and snacks to try our best to keep them comfortable."

Well before Oklahoma's first thunderstorms fired up at late afternoon, the Storm Prediction Center in Norman was already forecasting a violent evening. From the Texas border to near Joplin, Mo., residents were told to keep an eye to the sky and an ear out for sirens.

Forecasters warned of a "particularly dangerous situation," with ominous language about strong tornadoes and hail the size of grapefruits ? 4 inches in diameter.

Bad weather was also expected in parts of southeastern Kansas and southwestern Missouri. Tornado warnings were posted for remote areas of far southeastern Kansas and in the prairie well west of Oklahoma City, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Flooding will be a concern in the mid-Mississippi River Valley through the weekend.

Flash flooding and tornadoes killed three people in Arkansas late Thursday and Friday. Three others were missing in floods that followed 6 inches of rain in the rugged Ouachita Mountains near Y City, 125 miles west of Little Rock.

The Fourche La Fave River rose 24 feet overnight, temporarily swamping the U.S. 71 bridge in Scott County.

"The water just comes off that hill like someone is pouring a bucket in there," said Danny Straessle, a spokesman for the Arkansas Department of Highway and Transportation.

Scott County Sheriff Cody Carpenter died while trying to check on local residents during the storm and wildlife officer Joel Campora and two others are missing. They had traveled up Mill Creek by boat.

"Other deputies heard a loud crash," said Bill Hollenbeck, the sheriff of neighboring Sebastian County. "They thought that the bridge had actually collapsed. Looking into it further, the house had imploded as a directly result of rising waters from Mill Creek."

A man died after strong winds toppled a tree onto his car in Tull, just west of Little Rock, late Thursday. Authorities also are attributing the death of a woman in Scott County to flooding. Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe declared six counties as disaster areas.

Most tornadoes in the United States are relatively small, but the one that hit Moore on May 20 was a top-of-the scale EF5 with winds at 210 mph. Of the 60 EF5 tornadoes to hit since 1950, Oklahoma and Alabama have been hit the most ? seven times each. Moore has been hit twice ? last week and in 1999.

This spring's tornado season got a late start, with unusually cool weather keeping funnel clouds at bay until mid-May. The season usually starts in March and then ramps up for the next couple of months.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The stock market rose Thursday after a pair of lackluster economic reports raised expectations that the Federal Reserve will continue to boost the economy with its stimulus program.

Unemployment claims rose and an initial estimate of first-quarter economic growth was revised slightly lower. That suggests the U.S. economy may still need some time to recover from its funk and that the Fed will keep up its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases.

"The big worry that's been hitting the market lately, that the Fed might step back prematurely, might be fading a little today on the idea that the economy does need a bit more support," Jeff Kleintop, chief market strategist at LPL Financial, said.

The rise in the Standard & Poor's 500 index was led by banking and insurance stocks, which gained 1.1 percent. Among individual bank stocks, Bank of America rose to its highest in more than two years. JPMorgan also climbed.

Banks and other stocks that stand to benefit the most from an improving economy have surged this week, a change from earlier in the year when investors favored dividend-rich stocks like utilities. Now investors are selling dividend-rich stocks and buying so-called growth stocks. The S&P's financial index is up 2.1 percent this week; its utilities index is down 2.5 percent.

Even after this week's gain, by one measure bank stocks are still less expensive than the broader market. The price-to-earnings ratio for financial companies is 14.4 for banks and insurers, compared with 16.2 for all companies in the S&P 500 index, according to FactSet.

Banks are also attractive to investors because they have the capacity to increase their dividends from the current low levels, having bolstered their cash reserves after the financial crisis, Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist at RDM Financial, said.

"Banks appear to be on the mend," said Sheldon.

Bank of America rose 35 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $13.87. JPMorgan gained 95 cents, or 1.7 percent, $55.62 and Morgan Stanley rose 84 cents, or 3.4 percent, to $25.82.

Stocks also got a boost from deal news.

NV Energy surged $4.34, or 23 percent, to $23.62, leading a broad advance in utility companies, after a company owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway agreed to pay a premium of 23 percent to buy the Nevada-based power provider.

Clearwire, a wireless network operator, surged $1.02 cents, or 29 percent, to $4.50 after satellite TV operator Dish Network raised its bid for the company to $6.9 billion.

In economic news, the number of Americans seeking unemployment aid rose last week, a sign layoffs have increased, the Labor Department said Thursday. Claims for unemployment aid rose 10,000 last week to 354,000. The government also lowered its estimate for U.S. economic growth in the first three months of the year to 2.4 percent from 2.5 percent.

The S&P 500 rose in early trading, climbing as much as 13.55 points, or 0.8 percent, by late afternoon. The index then gave up some of its gain in the last hour of trading to end up just 6.05 points, or 0.4 percent, at 1,654.41.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 21.73 points, or 0.1 percent, at 15,324.53 points. The Nasdaq composite index rose 23.78 points, or 0.7 percent, to 3,491.30.

Trading has been choppy on Wall Street this week as investors wrestle with the question of whether the Fed will ease its economic stimulus. Minutes released last week from the Fed's last policy meeting showed that some central bank officials favored slowing the purchases as early as next month, if the economy improves enough. The program has been a major factor supporting a rally in stocks by encouraging investors to buy riskier assets.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 106 points Tuesday, then fell by the same amount Wednesday, leading some market watchers to ask whether the rally that has pushed the Dow and S&P 500 index to record levels may be fizzling out.

While the prospect of a change in Fed strategy is unsettling investors, ultimately, they should welcome the end of the Fed's stimulus because it means that the economy is strong enough to stand on its own two feet, JJ Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade, said.

"It's the vote of confidence," Kinahan said. "It should mean that the overall economy is healthy."

Phone companies and the makers of consumer staples were the biggest decliners, dropping 1 percent and 0.4 percent respectively. These so-called defensive stocks that pay rich dividends have fallen out of favor this month after investors pushed their prices higher at the start of the year.

Stock investors have had a good year so far. The Dow is 16.9 percent higher and has set record closing highs on nine days in May. The S&P 500 index is up 16 percent and is on track to rise for a seventh straight month, its longest winning streak since 2009.

In commodities trading, oil rose 48 cents to $93.61 a barrel. Gold rose $20.20, or 1.5 percent, to $1,411.50 an ounce. The dollar fell against the euro and the Japanese yen.

In government bond trading, the yield on the 10-year note was unchanged at 2.12 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? EMC, a data storage equipment maker, rose $1.27, or 5.4 percent, to $24.93 after the company said it will ramp up its stock buyback program and begin paying a quarterly dividend.

? Big Lots, a discount store chain, fell $3.45, or 9 percent, to $34.93 after the company reported a 21 percent drop in quarterly income and lowered its full-year revenue forecast.

? First Solar rose $3.39, or 6.5 percent, to $55.15 after the company's stock was upgraded to "buy" from "neutral" by Goldman Sachs. The investment bank says the solar energy's company's earnings may rise more than Wall Street forecasts and that it might buy other companies or its own stock as it generates more cash.

Insurance Premium Reductions ? Follow Up #2 ? Workers ...

Following WorkCover NSW?s recent announcement of industry rate reductions (see the original article here, and our follow-up here), further details of changes made to the Scheme for small employers have now been made available.

WorkCover states that the changes are intended to decrease administration and create savings for smaller businesses, while increasing focus on injured workers, and providing small employers with more incentive for proactive claims management.

These changes will be effective for policies renewing 30 June 2013 onwards, and please note that all of these changes relate ONLY to small employers.

Changes include:

  • Small Employer Definition ? The small employer limit has been increased from $10,000 to include employers with an annualised Basic Tariff Premium (BTP) of less than or equal to $30,000. This means that premiums of employers with an annualised BTP of $30,000 or less will not be impacted by claims cots. BTP is calculated by multiplying your wage roll by the WorkCover set rate for your industry.
  • Renewal Premium ? Agents will no longer ask small employers to provide a declaration of estimated wages. The 2013/2014 premium will be based on the current year?s estimate. From 2014/2015 onward, the renewal premium for small employers will be calculated on the actual wages, plus a determined adjustment factor such as the CPI (Consumer Price Index). If actual wages are not submitted, the renewal premium will be determined using the estimated wages plus 30%. If wages are expected to differ by 25% or more from the renewal figure, the agent can be advised and the premium amended.
  • Adjustment Premium ? The timeframe to submit the declaration of actual wages has been increased from two months after the end of the insurance period, to four months. If the declaration is not received within six months, the premium will be nil adjusted.
  • 5% Premium Discount ? If the annual premium is paid in full by the due date, the early payment discount is now 5% instead of 3%.
  • Employer Safety Incentive (ESI) ? Each policy year if all injured workers? return to full time pre-injury duties with 4 weeks of the date of injury a 10% reduction in premium will be given by WorkCover. This discount will be automatically applied, and will only be removed if the employer doesn?t meet the conditions during the year.
  • Return to Work Incentive (RTWI) ? If the employer doesn?t meet the conditions for the ESI (above), they can still get a 10% discount if every worker injured during the policy period returns to work within 13 weeks from the date of injury. The RTWI is applicable only if the employer is no longer eligible for the ESI.
  • Renewal Dates ? A small employer?s policy will be adjusted to align to the end of the calendar month prior to the current renewal date, if it does not already align to a calendar month end. E.g. a 29 September policy will be shortened to expire on 31 August.

If you have any questions or would like further information about these changes, please contact Caleb Kleinig at WCD on (02) 8745 2020.

Facebook Post About M Spa Salon's Poor Treatment Of Mom And Son With Autism Goes Viral

A Michigan family's trip to a salon on Saturday has caused an Internet firestorm after another salon patron posted about a conversation she witnessed on Facebook.

Vanessa Hunt wrote that she was getting a manicure when a mom (later identified as Ashley Bays) and her 2-and-a-half-year-old son, Grayson, came in for the boy's haircut. He was crying and Hunt recalled that her son reacted the same when he had his first haircut. Hunt wrote, in part:

All of a sudden a lady stormed into the portion of the spa we were sitting in and proceeded to give the mom a severe tongue lashing and explained how inappropriate her son's behavior was. It got silent in the room besides the woman ranting to the mother. It was seriously painful to watch seeing as I have been there more than once myself and it's very hard when your child is having a tantrum in public. The last thing you need is a woman yelling at you for it. At the conclusion of this woman's tantrum to the mother the mother said through tears, "I'm so sorry, he's autistic".

Bays left the salon, crying, and the hairstylist finished Grayson's haircut outside. Hunt went outside to comfort the mom and son.

MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette reports that the woman who allegedly yelled at Bays was the salon's owner, Michelle Mott. Bays told the paper that she had been a customer of that salon for years and had never experienced such poor treatment. "I understand if she doesn?t want children in the salon, but she could have handled it a lot differently. She could have pulled us to the side. She was very insensitive that he does have special needs,? she said.

Hunts Facebook post ended:

Please share this post if you find it as horrific and distasteful as I do. To the mom of the little boy out there, you are an amazing mother and your son is as cute as a button. I know you'll never forget this experience nor will I. I hope for his sake he does not remember it down the road. God bless you!

Since the status went up on Sunday night, it has been shared almost 30,000 times and has prompted a huge response. More than one salon has publicly offered free haircuts for Bays and her son and a page to boycott the M Spa Salon has been created. Hunt and Bays say that they had nothing to do with the creation of that page. Since Monday, the owner of the page has posted several messages -- some shaming the salon but some about autism in general.

Over on the salon's Yelp page, commenters are unanimously "disgusted". One reviewer identified as "N.N", however, faults both Bays and the salon for their actions -- N.N. claims that a high-end salon is no place for a child.

Both women told MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette that they did not expect this incident or one Facebook post to cause such backlash but they are glad that the message has struck a chord. "I think people need to be aware that things like this happen all the time,? Hunt said.

According to the news source, Mott is expected to make a statement but has not done so yet.

Confessions Of A Maximum Security Prison Guard - Careers Articles

prison guard outside open cell doorBy Paul Szoldra

Life behind bars is a challenge for prisoners serving time, but they aren't the only ones in maximum security prisons dealing with stress. Corrections officers responsible for overseeing prisons work in one of the most stressful and hazardous jobs in the U.S. -- topping the list of occupations with some of the highest nonfatal on-the-job injuries.

One Ohio CO took to the popular Reddit networking site to answer questions in an "Ask-Me-Anything" format, offering a very interesting (and somewhat disturbing) look at the life of a prison gatekeeper.

Some answers have been slightly edited for clarity.

On whether he has ever been afraid for his life while on the job:

I once denied access to chow 5 minutes too early and had 70 irate inmates standing in front of me pounding their fists. I called for backup, but at that moment I feared for my life due to their sheer strength in numbers.

I once was clocking out and was told by my supervisor that there was a riot planned in the block I was working that day and they planned to take a CO hostage. Thanks a lot, boss.

More: 10 Most Dangerous Jobs In The U.S.

On the dangers that officers face outside of work:

My wife and I have a code phrase. If we are out and about and I say "time to find socks," and quickly walk away -- that means I've spotted a former inmate that could possibly wish harm on me and my family. The life of my family and my life are threatened every day, followed by "I get out in xxx days." It only takes one to follow up.

He went on to say he's run into former inmates twice, but they ended "without incident." He also noted that "time to find socks" was not the actual code he uses.

On some of the unique weapons prisoners are able to create:

I see a lot of straightened, sharpened bed springs. A razor blade melted into a toothbrush handle. Tightly rolled paper and elastic band from a pair of underwear can be used to make a lethal bow and arrow.

More: Confessions Of A Prison Doctor

On what was the most disturbing contraband item ever discovered at his facility:

Cell phones are HORRIBLE. Gang leaders can quickly communicate and coordinate with other inmates at other institutions. Riots, murders ... Things like that. I've found steroids. Freakishly strong, insubordinate inmates that refuse to [do] anything you ask are dangerous. Especially when it becomes physical.

On how prisoners can possibly get such an item:

Staff bring in phones and in return are paid on the street by inmates' families.

I've heard [smugglers can be paid] $1500 for a smart phone. But I've never fully investigated. I value my career and livelihood of my family [too much] to do something impulsive like that.

On the importance of respect in prison:

The older gang leaders are respected by staff if they give the respect. They don't have to lift a finger on the compound. Their soldiers get them food, clothes, press their clothing, do all their work really. Older inmates that are respectable are called "convicts." A young gang banger is an "inmate."

More: A New Career Option For Ex-Cons: White-Collar Jail-Prep Tutor

On how prisoners find out about convicted child molesters and rapists:

When they call their families, they have the family member look up the inmate by name or number on the state offender search Web page where charges are listed. Child molesters normally have a very distinguishing look to them.

He agreed that inmates generally despise rapists and child molesters, saying "they are preyed upon and extorted very much."

On how to survive your first day in the joint:

Mean what you say and say what you mean. If you tell a guy you will get him something, get it for him. If you tell a guy you're gonna slam him if he doesn't go back to his cell, well ... get busy.

On whether he ever feels pity towards any of the inmates:

It does break my heart when I see an inmate holding his kids in the visit room. Those children did nothing to have their father taken away. A father is a protector and a mentor. Those children are missing all of that.

Police: Kenya arrested 1 of London attackers

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? An anti-terrorism police official in Kenya says one of the suspects who killed a British soldier on a London street in a savage attack was arrested in November 2010 near the East African country's border with Somalia.

Anti-terrorism unit head Boniface Mwaniki said Sunday that Michael Adebolajo was believed to have been preparing to train and fight with the al-Qaida-linked Somali militant group al-Shabab. He said Adebolajo was arrested with five others, and later deported.

Adebolajo was identified by hard-line Muslim leaders as one of two suspects in the killing of British soldier Lee Rigby this week.

Mwaniki also denied accusations that Adebolajo had been abused while in custody in Kenya.

Rights groups say Kenya often deports foreigners they suspect of involvement with terrorism, even without legal proof.

Americans gathered at memorials, museums and monuments and the president laid a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery to honor fallen service members on Memorial Day, as combat in Afghanistan approaches 12 years and the ranks of World War II veterans dwindle.

"Let us not forget as we gather here today that our nation is still at war," President Barack Obama said after laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

"When they give their lives, they are still being laid to rest in cemeteries in quiet corners across our country, including here in Arlington," he said. He told the stories of three soldiers who had died. Each had been devoted to their mission and were praised by others for saving lives.

Earlier in the morning, he and first lady Michelle Obama hosted a breakfast at the White House with "Gold Star" families of service members who have been killed.

Another wreath-laying ceremony was at Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island in New York City. The park is a tribute to President Roosevelt's famous speech calling for all people to enjoy freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined military leaders and others at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in Manhattan. He later encouraged New Yorkers to celebrate the day and the good weather but also "remember the sacrifice that was made so that we could be here."

At the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, about 20 bicyclists clustered around veteran and museum volunteer Tom Blakey. The paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division jumped at Normandy on D-Day ? June 6, 1944 ? and in May 1945 helped liberate the work camp at Wobbelin in northwest Germany.

"Most of us wondered why we were there, killing people and being killed," he said. "We didn't do anything to deserve it. When we got to that camp and saw what was there, the lights came on."

The cycling group makes regular weekend training runs, and on Monday started a Memorial Day ride about seven miles away at the national cemetery in Chalmette, where the Battle of New Orleans ? the last in the War of 1812 ? was fought.

"I'm glad I took this ride to hear a personal story," Scott Gumina, 41, said. "Hearing one man's account of his personal experience was pretty impressive to me."

In South Sioux City, Neb., a statue honoring a Navy dog handler was unveiled in his hometown. The statue of John Douangdara (dwung-DEHR'-ah) and his dog, Bart, is part of a five-acre dog park that's named for Douangdara. Petty Officer 1st Class Douangdara died along with 29 other Americans in August 2011 when a military helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan.

Across much of New England, several days of heavy rain gave way to sunny skies for parades in towns large and small.

In Portland, Maine, kids and even pets displayed the Stars and Stripes as veterans, youth groups law enforcement officials and civic organizations paraded to Monument Square to the tunes of a marching band, sirens from a police car and the rumble of motorcycles.

"It's a very important day, not only for the Veteran of Foreign Wars but every veteran organization, every branch of the service, and every patriot in general ? every American. This day is hugely significant and should never be forgotten," said David Olson, 66, of Portland, the VFW's state senior vice commander.

For some veterans, it was a somber event.

Richard Traiser, a Marine injured when his tank came under attack in Vietnam, helped deliver a three-volley salute with the Marine Corps League.

Memorial Day gives those who served an opportunity to get together and remember friends who didn't make it.

"I think about them a lot, especially the people I lost in my platoon," Traiser said. "I don't dwell on it in a morbid way, but it's on your mind."

In Connecticut, a Waterford man who was killed in the Vietnam War was honored with a hometown park area named for him. Arnold E. Holm Jr., nicknamed "Dusty," was killed when his helicopter was shot down on June 11, 1972.

In suburban Boston, veterans gathered in a park to mark Memorial Day this year rather than hold a parade because of failing health and dwindling numbers. The city of Beverly called off its parade because so few veterans would be able to march. The parade has been a fixture in the town since the Civil War.

In Atlanta, a dedication of the History Center's redone Veterans Park was scheduled for early evening. Soil from major battlefields will be scattered by veterans around the park's flagpole.

The holiday weekend also marked the traditional start of the U.S. vacation season. AAA, one of the nation's largest leisure travel agencies, expected 31.2 million Americans to hit the road over the weekend, virtually the same number as last year. Gas prices were about the same as last year, up 1 cent to a national average of $3.65 a gallon Friday.

At the American Airpower Museum on Long Island, N.Y., a program honored Women Air Service Pilots, or WASPs, who tested and ferried completed aircraft from factories to bases during World War II. Thirty-eight died during the war, including Alice Lovejoy of Scarsdale, N.Y., who was killed on Sept. 13, 1944, in a midair collision over Texas.

"It's very important that we recognize not only their contribution to American history, but women's history," said Julia Lauria-Blum, curator of the WASP exhibit at the museum. "These women really blazed a path; they were pioneers for women's aviation. And most important, they gave their lives serving their country and must be honored like anyone else on Memorial Day."

Dot Earth Blog: Where Will They Go When There's No More Room in Arlington

[This is a modified re-post (I'm enroute to the Arctic and offline for a bit).]

I wrote a song in the early 2000?s called ?Arlington,? which partly retells the remarkable history of the nation?s last resting place for its fallen defenders but also notes that the cemetery has been running short of space.

I?m recording my first album and have posted a near-final mix of a new version of the song on Soundcloud in honor of Memorial Day, and to get feedback on the tune:

At the heart of the chorus is a question: ?Where will they go when there?s no more room in Arlington??

I first posted a version of this song here in 2008. It?s worth revisiting periodically as a way of reflecting on the seemingly endless chain of sacrifices, generation by generation, in defense of freedom and nationhood.

Is it possible that a day will come when warfare will be history, instead of news ? when there?ll be a memorial day not only for those who sacrificed, but for war itself?

There?s a long line of argument pointing to an eventual end to war, in part due to the increased connectedness and interdependence of human societies for whom it was once easier to identify someone else on the planet as the ?other? ? and thus a threat. Those making the case include?Steven Pinker, Matt Ridley and, most recently,?John Horgan in ?The End of War.?

To some extent the roots of such thinking extend back at least to Darwin. In a 2008 piece called ?Darwin and Havel?s Unified Planet Theory,? I cited Darwin?s articulation of this notion in ?The Descent of Man,? first published in 1871:

As man advances in civilization, and small tribes are united into larger communities, the simplest reason would tell each individual that he ought to extend his social instincts and sympathies to all the members of the same nation, though personally unknown to him. This point being once reached, there is only an artificial barrier to prevent his sympathies extending to the men of all nations and races.

As I?ve been asserting lately, with the buildout of the ?Knowosphere,? we may be poised to surmount that barrier. Or not.

We now have the tools and capacity to build a connected, informed, empathic, collaborative world ? or to build walls and live in isolated bubbles.

My guess, no surprise, is that we?ll long inhabit a hybrid planet, with the trends largely toward more peaceful coexistence, and with losses in martial clashes ? especially as a percentage of the global population ? continuing to shrink.

But the bugles ? brass or digital ? will continue to play several dozen times a day at Arlington for a very long time to come.

NYC lawsuit alleging Favre sent racy texts settled

NEW YORK (AP) ? A lawsuit filed by two massage therapists who sued retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre over claims he sent racy text messages has been settled, a lawyer for the women said Friday.

Lawyer David Jaroslawicz wouldn't comment on the terms of the settlement, saying only that the case had been "resolved and discontinued."

Christina Scavo and Shannon O'Toole had alleged in a lawsuit seeking unspecified damages that in 2008, while Favre was playing for the New York Jets, they lost their part-time jobs with the team after complaining that he sent sexually suggestive texts to another therapist.

During the 2008 preseason, the lawsuit alleged, the three-time NFL MVP sent another woman a text message asking to get together with her and Scavo, followed by another text saying, "I guess I have bad intentions."

After Scavo's husband asked Favre to apologize, she and O'Toole lost gigs with the Jets, the lawsuit said.

A lawyer for Favre didn't immediately respond to a call for comment Friday but has denied the allegations in the past, arguing in court papers that if the therapists lost work Favre wasn't responsible for it. A lawyer for the Jets also didn't immediately respond to a call seeking comment Friday.

The therapists' lawsuit was filed five days after the NFL fined Favre $50,000 for not being forthright in an investigation into allegations that he sent bawdy text messages and photos to former Jets game hostess Jenn Sterger when they both worked for the team. During that investigation, media reports claimed Favre also had pursued massage therapists, but the NFL said it was unable to get enough information to decide whether the reports were substantiated.

The Jets have said O'Toole and Scavo worked for the team for a combined total of five days over two years, making $2,300 in all, and were never guaranteed ongoing work. The team wasn't told about the women's concerns and simply turned to other massage therapists after its training facility moved in 2008, its officials and lawyers have said in court filings.

Favre retired from the NFL in 2010, after playing for 20 seasons, mostly with the Green Bay Packers. He began his career with the Atlanta Falcons and ended it with the Minnesota Vikings.

(AP) ? A pair of rockets slammed into a car dealership and a residential building in strongholds of Lebanon's Hezbollah militia in southern Beirut on Sunday, wounding four people and raising fears that Syria's civil war is increasingly moving to Lebanon.

Lebanon's sectarian divide mirrors that of Syria, and Lebanese armed factions have taken sides in their neighbor's civil war.

There was no claim of responsibility for Sunday's attack. However, a Syrian rebel commander threatened earlier this week to strike against Hezbollah strongholds in retaliation for the militia's military support for Syrian President Bashar Assad. Hezbollah is a Shiite Muslim group, while most of the rebels are Sunnis.

Street fighting between rival Lebanese groups has been relatively common since the end of the country's 15-year civil war in 1990, but rocket or artillery attacks on Beirut neighborhoods are rare.

The rockets struck hours after Hezbollah's leader, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, vowed to help propel Assad to victory in Syria's civil war and warned that the Syrian leader's overthrow would give rise to extremists.

One rocket struck a car dealership in the Mar Mikhael district on the southern edge of the capital, wounding four Syrian workers and damaging two cars, according to Lebanese security officials and witnesses.

Another rocket hit the second floor of an apartment building in the Chiyah district, about two kilometers (one mile) away. It damaged the facade and a door leading to a living room, but no one was wounded.

A security official said rocket launchers were found in woods in a predominantly Christian and Druse area in suburbs southeast of Beirut. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

An ongoing battle in the Syrian town of Qusair on the Lebanese border has laid bare Hezbollah's growing role in the Syrian conflict. The Iranian-backed militia and Syrian troops launched an offensive against the town last weekend. After dozens of Hezbollah fighters were killed in Qusair over the past week and buried in large funerals in Lebanon, Hezbollah could no longer play down its involvement.

Col. Abdul-Jabbar al-Aqidi, commander of the Syrian rebels' Military Council in Aleppo, appeared in a video this week while apparently en route to Qusair, in which he threatened to strike in Beirut's southern suburbs in retaliation for Hezbollah's involvement in Syria.

"We used to say before, 'We are coming Bashar.' Now we say, 'We are coming Bashar and we are coming Hassan Nasrallah,'" he said, in reference to Hezbollah's leader.

"We will strike at your strongholds in Dahiyeh, God willing," he said, using the Lebanese name for Hezbollah's power center in southern Beirut. The video was still online on Youtube on Sunday.

Hezbollah lawmaker Ali Ammar said the incident targeted coexistence between the Lebanese and claimed the U.S. and Israel want to return Lebanon to the years of civil war. "They want to throw Lebanon backward into the traps of civil wars that we left behind," he told reporters. "We will not go backward."

Interior Minister Marwan Charbel blamed "saboteurs" and said: "We hope what is happening in Syria does not move to Lebanon."

Nasrallah's speech Saturday offered the clearest public confirmation yet that the militia is directly involved in Syria's war. Nasrallah's remarks were also the first since Hezbollah fighters have pushed to the front lines of Qusair.

In his televised address, he said Hezbollah members are fighting in Syria against Islamic radicals who pose a danger to Lebanon, and pledged that his group will not allow Syrian militants to control areas along the Lebanese border. He pledged that Hezbollah will turn the tide of the conflict in Assad's favor, and stay as long as necessary to do so.

"We will continue this road until the end, we will take the responsibility and we will make all the sacrifices," he said. "We will be victorious."

Lebanese Sunnis sympathetic to the Syrian opposition have also been fighting in Syria alongside the rebels. Nasrallah urged both sides to fight for their side in Syria "and leave Lebanon out of it."

The fighting next door has repeatedly spilled over the border. For the past week, Assad's opponents and supporters have been clashing in the Lebanese port city of Tripoli, using mortars, grenades and machine guns to attack densely populated areas.

Syria's main opposition group, the Syrian National Council, slammed Nasrallah's speech as an "an attempt to pit the Lebanese people against their Syrian brothers and sisters who have revolted against the brutal dictator."

In a statement Sunday, it said his speech "has the potential for serious ramifications in the region."

"It explicitly declares Iranian interests as superior to the basic, inherent rights of people across the region," the statement said.

6 People Saved By Their Enemies

www.cracked.com:

We all have at least one enemy we'd love to see crawl on their knees to beg for our help, only for us to say no and laugh at their misery.

Some of the most powerful people in the world have found themselves in this exact situation ... and when the time came to tell off their rivals, they instead turned around and said, "Sure thing, buddy, let me help you with that."

Like the time when Hitler saved a jew.

That may be set to change, thanks in part to a global movie star, "the Russian actor of French origin" Gerard Depardieu, who was granted Russian citizenship by President Vladimir Putin last January after he ditched his native France in a huff over high taxes.

Mr. Depardieu, who has become a vocal booster of his new homeland, is currently making a movie in Moscow and its repeatedly war-ravaged southern republic of Chechnya. It's a fairly standard blood-and-guts thriller called "Biryuza" (Turqoise) ? a tale of tragedy, betrayal, lots and lots of mayhem and, finally, sweet bloody revenge.

But Depardieu and the film's producers are making it clear that this movie's backdrop will be graphically different from the sad, impoverished land so often depicted by Hollywood. It will be set amid the glittering skyscrapers and swank nightclubs of Putin-era Moscow and the risen-from-the-ashes boulevards and modern apartment blocks?of postwar Chechnya. And it will feature many noble Russian ??and Chechen ??characters, as well as the usual gangsters.

With his co-star, British actress Liz Hurley, and director Philippe Martinez in tow, Depardieu faced journalists at a press conference in the Chechen capital, Grozny,?on Wednesday?to explain why he chose Chechnya to make a violent vengeance-themed movie.

"I followed everything that happened here and saw a city totally rebuilt and very sympathetic people," he said. "I saw more love and friendship than hate here."

But, perhaps also in the Putin-era spirit, anyone with questions about human rights abuses or the arbitrary one-man rule of Depardieu's "very close friend," pro-Moscow Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov, was made to feel extremely unwelcome.

Asked by a journalist whether there were any parallels to be found in the fictional Depardieu's character's murderous revenge streak that culminates in Chechnya, and the real-life assassinations of Mr. Kadyrov's political foes that have been documented by human rights monitors, the film's director Mr. Martinez exploded in fury, according to the Independent.

"I have to tell you I?m a bit ashamed that you are asking that question," he is quoted as saying. "Gerard Depardieu and Elizabeth Hurley are making a movie in Chechnya! And you?re asking questions of a political nature! I don?t even want to answer."
