The Unique Estate Planning Program from JSK Associates | Women ...

July 23, 2012 by pl

Because of the volatility of today?s market, it comes as no surprise that even some financial institutions rely on bigger companies to support their needs during downtime. The problem with this kind of set up is the fact that everything could go tumbling down and both the company as well as the financial backer could find themselves having to declare bankruptcy.? When this happens, it is generally their clients who suffer the most. That being said, it is only normal that a client should look for a financial institution that can work on their own, one who does not need any financial backing from other companies. One of the few financial advisory firms that are able to meet this criterion is JSK Associates.

?

JSK Associates has been in the financial industry since the early part of the ?80s. Having been in the field that long, they have already seen what clicks with their clients and what they can do away with. One of the things that the company is proud of is the fact they are able to provide their clients utmost service without having to require financial backing from other institutions. Some of the services that they are able to provide include tax planning, estate planning, and asset management. Of these, it is the estate planning that many people are not keenly aware of.

?

In essence, estate planning involves the preparation and the organizing of how an estate would be disposed of should the owner be no longer around. JSK Associates provides one of the most comprehensive estate planning around.? Before resolving to do anything, JSK checks first what would be the tax implications of the various strategies that they would implement. JSK staff takes time to evaluate exposure to estate tax as well as explore the various options a client can have in order to ensure a smooth disposal without incurring too much expense.

?

With JSK as a person?s estate planner, he or she need not worry of ever something happens to him or her, or in case the person needs to travel and there would be no one left behind to take care of his properties. What?s more, certain programs can be combined in the estate planning program making the latter even more comprehensive. Some of these programs include Stand By trusts and nursing home insurance.

?

The JSK Associates Estate Planning program comes in two parts. The first part deals with the preparations that need to be done should a medical emergency happen to the person. The second part, on the other hand, deals more with the distribution of the estate, among other things, in case the estate owner dies.?

Solid Tips Anyone Can Use For Personal Finance ... - Credit Deal

Posted on Jul 23, 2012 in Credit Score | Comments Off

You can have a hard time in life if you do not have a good financial situation. If you are looking to improve your financial situation, try the ideas in this article.

You can save money by doing certain home improvements on your own. There are many classes on home improvement, as well as online videos. Use these to teach yourself.

Whatever difficult situation might arise, you should never risk losing your retirement savings to solve the problem. There are many alternative methods to improve your immediate situation. Destroying your future in order to repair your present is hardly logical.

It is never too late or too early to start getting your personal finances on track. By doing this, you will be much more prepared at 60 than if you didn?t start at all. A late start in good financial management is better than a non-existent one.

If you want your property to stay under control, pay attention to your cash flow. Also, be sure to track all of the money that you make and what bills are coming due on month?s close. Also, create a budget, which will allow for you to allot funds to certain areas.

If the timing is wrong for you, avoid selling. If you?re getting good money from a certain stock, leave it alone for a period of time. Carefully study your portfolio, and decide which stocks you should sell and which ones you should hold on to.

Turn your previous financial mishaps into a learning experience. Spending years paying off debt should be a lesson in and of itself. You should strive to avoid debt in your future. If you took years digging your way out of a hole, remember how you got there in the first place and avoid those mistakes. You can turn any negative experience into a positive lesson when it involves your personal finances. Take the lessons you have learned and apply them to your finances in the future, giving you an advantage moving forward.

Stay tuned to the news in order to be aware of the global market. Americans tend to ignore news from outside the U.S. but this is a mistake when trading currencies. Having a good knowledge of world financial markets is a great way to get started o0n making positive investments for your future.

There are ways to negotiate with debt collectors. Chances are that they bought your debt for a low price. Even if you only pay a little bit of the debt you owe, they profit. Take advantage of this to get rid of any old debt at a low price.

Thrift shopping is not for the financially challenged like it once was! You could save yourself a ton of money on great things such as designer clothing and shoes, household furnishings, books and more at any of these thrift-type stores. These stores are also great for kids, as they enjoy scouring the store for interesting finds. Shopping during the early part of the day will provide the most choices.

To keep yourself financially stable, you have to look at your finances like a bank would. Although it can be time consuming, you have to develop an accurate picture of both your income and your expenses. When your expenses vary, estimate on the high end; if there is money left over when the week is done, save it.

Nobody wants to experience the process of losing their home. However, if it would help improve your financial situation, you should look long and hard at getting into a home with cheaper rent/payments. You do not want to be thrown out of your home for not paying your mortgage. Sometimes it?s a good idea be preemptive.

Find a checking account that works to your advantage. It is common for folks to cling to the same checking account they?ve always had, despite the costly fees their institution now charges. Find out the fees your bank charges you and try to switch to something that charges less, so you could save more money.

Cultivating your personal finance skills can help you be more confident and less stressed about your money. When you get your finances together, you reduce stress and have more time to focus on the important things that life has to offer.

- Just in case that you would wish to know more about quick personal loans or possibly personal unsecured loans We all recommend Credit Deal. Precisely the same money but simply much better deals.

Cavendish sprint win a warning to Olympic rivals

BRIVE-LA-GAILLARDE, France (AP) ? Britain's Mark Cavendish has given warning: he will not be denied Olympic gold.

With just seven days to go until the Olympic road race, the "Manx Missile" showed why he is second to none in a bunch sprint, winning the 18th stage of the Tour de France with a stunning burst of speed in the last 600 meters.

The rider from the Isle of Man has sacrificed personal glory during this year's Tour, accepting a smaller haul of stage wins to help teammate Bradley Wiggins become the first Briton to win cycling's premier event.

Worryingly for Cavendish's rivals, this has only increased his appetite for Olympic gold.

"I didn't get to sprint as much, it can make you hungry for sprints when you're used to winning five stages here every year," Cavendish said after bagging his second victory of the Tour in a leg that covered 138 hilly miles from Blagnac to Brive-la-Gaillarde in southwest France.

The win cemented the 27-year-old world champion's place as the bookmakers' favorite to capture the first British Olympic gold medal in the road race set for July 28.

The win in Friday's stage gave Cavendish confidence heading into the Olympics, which have been the sprinter's main focus all season.

"It's really important, especially in the fashion I did it," Cavendish said. "It was lumpy, with around 2,000 meters of climbing," he said, which is a lot for pure sprinters, but something he has trained for this year, dropping 9 pounds to prepare for the Olympic course's Box Hill climb.

"There were times I was suffering. It can really give me confidence I've come out of this Tour de France in good condition," Cavendish said.

Team Sky manager Dave Brailsford praised his star sprinter. "He just demonstrated once again why he is such an amazing rider and a genuine world champion," Brailsford said. "It's a good sign for Paris and London."

Cavendish's 22nd Tour de France victory came against some of the same sprinters he'll face in London, including second-place finisher Matt Goss of Australia and young Slovak sensation Peter Sagan, who finished third.

Another rider whom Cavendish aims to beat next week is Norwegian champion Edvald Boasson Hagen ? one of his teammates on Team Sky.

Cavendish was full of praise for the 25-year-old Norwegian, calling him "one of the favorites" for Olympic gold.

"He's fast enough if it's a small group he'll be able to contend there," Cavendish said.

One advantage Cavendish has over the Norwegian is that unlike Boasson Hagan, Cavendish rides on the same professional team with two of the other members of Britain's road racing team, Wiggins and Chris Froome.

"We'll have to see how well the Norwegian team jell together, they're all guys from different teams," Cavendish said.

Another of Cavendish's Olympic teammates, David Millar, said that Cavendish's win Friday was "important" for their motivation heading into the games.

"We're on different pro teams, but we're in the same Olympic team, so it's important for us," said Millar, who is racing the Tour for U.S. team Garmin Sharp.

The top of the standings didn't change. Wiggins leads Froome by 2 minutes, 5 seconds. Vincenzo Nibali of Italy is third, 2:41 behind. Defending champion Cadel Evans of Australia is sixth, 9:57 back.

The day's ride got off to a furious pace with riders looking for glory by pulling away. But the pack held close, never letting the breakaway get ahead by more than about 3? minutes.

In the finish, Wiggins, Cavendish and the Sky team made it look easy with an almost textbook sprint setup. With less than a mile to go, Wiggins took the head of the pack and chased down six breakaway riders, then peeled away.

The Sky train motored ahead and Cavendish, showing he's perhaps the world's most explosive rider, whirred around the remaining escapees in the last few hundred yards to win by a couple of bike lengths.

The final big showdown comes Saturday, a 33-mile time trial from Bonneval to Chartres. Riders will leave one-by-one down a ramp in the race against the clock in reverse order of the standings.

The race's top 10 has essentially been frozen for the entire second half of the Tour. The time gaps are such that little is likely to be changed after Saturday's time trial. However, one shift could be a higher placing for young U.S. rider Tejay van Garderen.

The Montana native, who finished a strong fourth place in the race's first time trial, needs to make up 2:38 to overtake Jurgen Van Den Broeck in the overall standings.

Van Garderen beat Van Den Broeck by 2:03 in the shorter time trial earlier in the race, meaning a strong ride could lift the American into fourth place on the Champs-Elysees.

Scared about colonoscopy - Health, Fitness, and Sports

I'm having a colonoscopy next week to investigate bleeding. However I'm pretty scared due to a number of things. I've never been sedated before and I can't say it is an experience I'm looking forward to at all. I don't like the feeling of a loss of control or the feeling of lowered consciousness. I'm scared that the procedure might be a bit traumatic for me.
I am also scared of the risk of the procedure. Apparently sometimes the endoscope can pierce the walls of the intestine and can cause infection and might need surgical intervention.

I am also scared that they may find some polyps or something a bit nasty.

Has anybody here had a colonoscopy before? Is it really as traumatic as it sounds?

People kept telling me the worst part was the prep (that nasty stuff that makes you go poo all night long).
I laughed at them - I have to deal with nearly the same thing one to three times a month (physical birth defect).

I DID turn down the head-drugs. I read too much about Versed (which is what they use here) that scared the hell out of me. It's a PRE hypnotic - which means it doesn't block pain, but rather makes you forget everything that happens in the next two hours... NO THANKS. My memory is about the only thing I have going for me, and I don't want it mucked around with.

The actual procedure went fine. Very little discomfort. I got another amusement when the doc looked at my rear end and didn't know how to insert the tube (but I had experienced the same issue when I'd had a barium enema long ago so not surprised at all) - so I had to do it. Being one in 5,000 is occassionally fun. [Edit: not fun inserting the tube, but rather fun mocking the doctors' and nurses reactions - "Oh My Gawd! Um, I Mean.. So Sorry! I've Never Seen....." ]

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. If you felt comfortable with the doctor in the interview, go for it. Get it done. If you've ever had a bowel MRI or a barium enema, you've been through worse. For me at least (and remember I dodged the drugs) the colonoscopy was disturbing, invasive, but not terribly uncomfortable or painful.

And it was fun to watch the monitor.

Having had bowel cancer a few years ago I am a frequent flyer in the Colonoscopy Club. I agree the preparation is worse than the event itself. I manage to crack jokes in the waiting room because my surgery left me with a colostomy - no nerves, and a ready-made inspection route (sorry TMI!). As an Aspie I react oddly with drugs so try to avoid them - the sedation (aka 'Milk of Amnesia') doesn't have any effect on me, while general anaesthesia leaves me with hallucinations for days.

If they find polyps (I had one last time), they usually remove them there and then during the process - completely painless and instant. Mishaps in the procedure needing surgery to put them right are so rare as to be not worth worrying about.

Watching the monitor isn't everybody's taste (though more entertaining than daytime TV?). My report included photos of scenic highlights en route - I asked the surgeon what to do with the pictures, and he suggested turning them into Christmas cards....!

All the best, and I hope the result is clear.

Hey Chris. One of the things I'm particularly worried about is the adverse affects of the drugs they use to alter my consciousness. I'm fearful of sedation because I don't like the loss of control/or memory loss associated with it.
I also made a pact with myself that I'd never take benzos because of the adverse side effects of the drugs. In particular you mention with general anaesthesia and hallucinations? Is this a common side effect of the drug? I extremely hope the drugs they give me don't make me become a little schizo for a few days.

Well, in all honesty, having a lower colonoscopy sucks. No way to sugar coat it. I've been through them a number of times. As others have mentioned, the prep is awful. The enemas I received just before the treatment for final clearing might be worse. And being knocked out, isn't to bad, but recovering from the medication can take awhile. You fart a good deal afterwards too. The doctor fills your gut full of air. The procedure does have risks as you note. My mom has a friend, who has a sister that last year had a colonoscopy, and her intestines where pierced. She was in a bad way for a good long while. She recovered though.

With all that said, if you are having bleeding, best to have it checked out. Hopfully it is only a minor issue. If it is cancer, then good to catch it as early as possible. Best of luck.

For a laugh thought you might enjoy this classic article by Dave Barry. It humorously describes his colonoscopy experience.

July 20, 2012 ? We've compiled some of the most thought-provoking commentaries from around the Web. Catch up on the conversation with bloggers from National Women's Law Center, Slate and more.

PREGNANCY IN THE WORKPLACE: "'Working Maternity Leaves' Aren't the Solution," Liz Watson, National Women's Law Center's "Womenstake": The news that new Yahoo! CEO Melissa Mayer plans to work during her maternity leave "could suggest to many that these days any woman who wants to can easily balance the demands of work and family," Watson writes. She points out that only 11% of employees in the U.S. receive paid family leave and fewer than half of workers are eligible for unpaid family leave. She adds that some women "find themselves forced out of their jobs even sooner -- during pregnancy," which underscores the need to enact the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, a bill to require employers to provide reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers (Watson, "Womenstake," NWLC, 7/18).

What others are saying about pregnancy in the workplace:

~ "What Does Marissa Mayer's Pregnancy Mean for Other Pregnant Women?" Jessica Grose, Slate's "XX Factor."

~ "Woo hoo for Yahoo for Making Pregnant Marissa Mayer its New CEO," Melinda Henneberger, Washington Post's "She The People."

~ "Marissa Mayer Becomes First Ever Pregnant CEO of Fortune 500 Company," Annie-Rose Strasser, ThinkProgress.

~ "How the Zero Weeks of Paid Maternity Leave in the U.S. Compare Globally," Amanda Peterson Beadle, Care2.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN: "Veteran Bikes To End Epidemic of Military Sexual Assault," Nancy Parrish, Huffington Post blogs: Retired U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Colleen Bushnell and four military service members on July 15 began a 4,000-mile bike ride from Washington state to the District of Columbia to raise awareness for survivors of military sexual assault. DOD estimates that more than 19,000 service members were raped or sexually assaulted in 2010, but only 13.5% reported the incidents. Of those who reported the crimes, three-fourths said they would not do so again, according to Parrish, who notes, "Victims often face retaliation for reporting the crime" (Parrish, Huffington Post blogs, 7/17).

What others are saying about violence against women:

~ "Violence Exists. Women Exist. The Violence Against Women Act Should Too." Women Campaign Forum's "Women and Politics."

~ "Preacher: Women Need a Dress Code To Prevent Assault," Amy Boughner, Care2.

~ "'Nice Guys' Contribute to Rape Culture," Ben Atherton-Zeman, Ms. Magazine blog.

CHALLENGE TO ACA CONTRACEPTIVE COVERAGE: "One Down and 23 To Go: Judge Tosses Baseless Challenge to Birth Control Coverage," Sarah Lipton-Lubet/Brigitte Amiri, American Civil Liberties Union's "Washington Markup": A federal court "properly rejected [the] ridiculous argument" by a few attorneys general that the Obama administration's contraception coverage rules would burden state governments by "forcing droves of new citizens on to the Medicaid rolls" if their employers dropped coverage, Lipton-Lubet and Amiri write, noting that "individuals with jobs generally don't financially qualify for Medicaid." The court also rejected the states' religious liberties claims, they add, concluding that religious freedom "doesn't give one group the right to impose its beliefs on others by denying employees access to critical health services" (Lipton-Lubet/Amiri, "Washington Markup," ACLU, 7/18).

What others are saying about the challenge to ACA contraceptive coverage:

~ "Federal Judge Throws Out Lawsuit Against Obama Administration's Contraception Mandate," Tara Culp-Ressler, ThinkProgress.

ACCESS TO CONTRACEPTION: "It's Time To Recommit to Family Planning in the United States," Joan Malin, RH Reality Check: "Even as the United States reclaims its leadership role in global health and development, a radicalized U.S. House of Representatives is working to curtail reproductive rights here at home, and state governments are aggressively dismantling family-planning programs on which millions of Americans depend," writes Malin of Planned Parenthood of New York City. "It's time to set aside politics and recommit ourselves -- as a city, a state and a nation -- to family planning and sexual health," she continues, adding, "If the global community can revive them in 2012, so can we" (Malin, RH Reality Check, 7/19).

What others are saying about access to contraception:

D.C. ABORTION BAN MARKUP: "Open Letter to Representative Trent Franks: What Caring About Women and Babies Really Looks Like," Bria Murray, RH Reality Check: Murray, who became pregnant as a result of rape, asks a number of questions of Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), who authored a bill (HR 3803) that would ban abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy in the District of Columbia. They include how he can claim to care about babies and women when he continually supports policies that harm them. She asks how he can "claim to care about pregnant people and the babies they are carrying when you voted to deny federal funding to Planned Parenthood, the very organization that helped empower me to keep my baby?" She continues, "The answer is you can't, Representative Franks, and that is why you must do your best to support all options a person could possibly make regarding an unintended pregnancy, even if you do not agree with it" (Murray, RH Reality Check, 7/19).

What others are saying about the D.C. abortion ban markup:

~ "Abortion in D.C.," Juliet Lapidos, New York Times' "Taking Note."

CRISIS PREGNANCY CENTERS: "In Maryland, Free Speech Protects the Right of Crisis Pregnancy Centers To Lie to Women: An Analysis of the Baltimore CPC Case," Imani Gandy, RH Reality Check: Responding to a ruling that struck down a Baltimore ordinance (FID 09-0406) requiring crisis pregnancy centers to post signs saying they do not provide abortions or birth control, Gandy writes that the ruling "paved the way to allow religion to trump common sense and women's health concerns." She adds, "As with reproductive health issues in politics generally, the health of women is treated as some sort of academic or religious inquiry, rather than the life-and-death matter that it is" (Gandy, RH Reality Check, 7/17).

Phone Service Providers: The Best Way to Pick the Best For Your Business

Today, communication is significantly better because of company phone service providers and modern day technology. Company owners, managers and workers are constantly given more choices for interaction in the form of mobile devices, landlines and Internet-based tools. The success of any company lies in the open communication between clients and companies. This is why picking the best service provider for your business phone system is really a must.

Starting the Search

You can find many telecommunications companies that offer advanced phone services. What you have to do is find the provider that could respond to the demands of your enterprise. Because of the internet, it is possible to look up service providers in a snap. Just open a Web browser, use a search engine, type the keyword and start the online search. You'll automatically get hundreds of results for phone service providers. Create a shortlist based on your company's size, type of operation and its targets. Once you have shortlisted prospects, investigate further. To obtain candid comments about various service providers read online discussions and visit consumer forums. Also also look into the packages given and their corresponding prices. Read up on features, short- and long-term choices as well as feedback on quality of service.

Things to take into account

Before signing up for phone services, the internet should be the first thing you need to take into account. To compete with the company bigwigs, opt for a cloud-based telephone system powered by businesses VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). Your business should have access to a reputable Internet connection. Most phone service providers these days provide Internet-based services to make business communications quicker.

Also take into account the kind of phone system that the provider intends to set up for your firm. The easy and quick interface of the VoIP telephone system is the reason why many business enterprises prefer to use it. It's also easy to set up and integrate with other business solutions. Moreover, it's more inexpensive and easier to maintain than a traditional telephone system.

Take into account the number of your personnel as well as your spending budget. Many phone service providers can offer you a complete call and fax management scheme for a low annual fee. Bear in mind that cheap is not always practical, just as expensive isn't always effective. Before subscribing to a service provider, be sure that you will get value for your hard-earned money.

It can be a big challenge to choose from a sea of service providers. It's easy to be swayed by fancy ads and even fancier packages. You need to prepare to make your search less complicated. List down the frequent modes of communication in your workplace.

Benefits Up for Grabs

By using modern cost-effective solutions of service providers, it is possible to save a lot of money. Pick a provider with convenient and efficient services. This way, you can do more in less time. You can boost workplace productivity while giving better customer service. This helps establish sturdy professional networks and customer loyalty. Some features to look out for are call forwarding, conference calling, caller ID and online fax.

Picking among the best business phone service providers will be a breeze as long as you know what you want and need for your business.

What Do Obama and Romney Know About Science? And Why It Matters

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.en

Image: League of Women Voters

Scientific American is partnering with the folks at ScienceDebate.org and more than a dozen leading science and engineering organizations to try to inject more discussion about critical science issues into the U.S. presidential election campaign this year. As part of that effort, we will be asking the two main presidential candidates?Barack Obama and Mitt Romney?to respond to 14 questions (listed below) on some of the biggest scientific and technological challenges facing the U.S. in the near future. We will grade the candidates? answers in the November magazine issue of Scientific American?as well as give you the opportunity to provide your own assessments (or take issue with ours) on the web.

Why is Scientific American taking this step? If you look beyond the made-up controversies that seem to dominate political discussion these days to the real issues?the real challenges, threats and opportunities that the U.S. faces today, tomorrow and for the rest of the century?you?ll find that most of them require a better grasp of some key scientific question or research field. Sometimes the link is obvious?as with global climate change. Other times it becomes clear only upon reflection?as with creating new avenues of economic innovation (just what do you think has fueled a substantial amount of the growth in the US economy for the past sixty years?)

The point is, as informed citizens, we need to know how the presidential candidates expect to address the basic scientific issues that are so vital to our country?s and our planet?s future?and that their policies will be based on sound science. The best showcase for such a discussion would be a live debate between the candidates dedicated entirely to scientific issues.

As a starting point, more than a dozen scientific and engineering organizations?ranging from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to the Union of Concerned Scientists?have come up with what they see as the top science questions facing the US in 2012. The questions are now being sent to the presidential campaigns. In addition, Scientific American will contact key leaders in Congress who play major roles in determining how scientific knowledge is translated into policy with a subset of these questions that are most applicable to the legislative branch of government for their response.

So take a look at the following questions (also available at ScienceDebate.org/questions.html) and let us know via your comments what you think of both the questions and whether you would like to see the presidential candidates? take part in a debate devoted to the scientific issues that underlie key economic, foreign policy and education issues.

1. Innovation and the Economy. Science and technology have been responsible for over half of the growth of the U.S. economy since WWII, when the federal government first prioritized peacetime science mobilization. But several recent reports question America?s continued leadership in these vital areas. What policies will best ensure that America remains a world leader in innovation?

2. Climate Change. The Earth?s climate is changing and there is concern about the potentially adverse effects of these changes on life on the planet. What is your position on cap-and-trade, carbon taxes, and other policies proposed to address global climate change?and what steps can we take to improve our ability to tackle challenges like climate change that cross national boundaries?

3. Research and the Future. Federally funded research has helped to produce America?s major postwar economies and to ensure our national security, but today the UK, Singapore, China, and Korea are making competitive investments in research.? Given that the next Congress will face spending constraints, what priority would you give to investment in research in your upcoming budgets?

4. Pandemics and Biosecurity. Recent experiments show how Avian flu may become transmissible among mammals. In an era of constant and rapid international travel, what steps should the United States take to protect our population from emerging diseases, global pandemics and/or deliberate biological attacks?

5. Education. Increasingly, the global economy is driven by science, technology, engineering and math, but a recent comparison of 15-year-olds in 65 countries found that average science scores among U.S. students ranked 23rd, while average U.S. math scores ranked 31st.? In your view, why have American students fallen behind over the last three decades, and what role should the federal government play to better prepare students of all ages for the science and technology-driven global economy?

6. Energy. Many policymakers and scientists say energy security and sustainability are major problems facing the United States this century. What policies would you support to meet the demand for energy while ensuring an economically and environmentally sustainable future?

7. Food. Thanks to science and technology, the United States has the world?s most productive and diverse agricultural sector, yet many Americans are increasingly concerned about the health and safety of our food.? The use of hormones, antibiotics and pesticides, as well as animal diseases and even terrorism pose risks.? What steps would you take to ensure the health, safety and productivity of America?s food supply?

8. Fresh Water. Less than one percent of the world?s water is liquid fresh water, and scientific studies suggest that a majority of U.S. and global fresh water is now at risk because of increasing consumption, evaporation and pollution.? What steps, if any, should the federal government take to secure clean, abundant fresh water for all Americans?

9. The Internet. The Internet plays a central role in both our economy and our society.? What role, if any, should the federal government play in managing the Internet to ensure its robust social, scientific, and economic role?

10. Ocean Health. Scientists estimate that 75 percent of the world?s fisheries are in serious decline, habitats like coral reefs are threatened, and large areas of ocean and coastlines are polluted. What role should the federal government play domestically and through foreign policy to protect the environmental health and economic vitality of the oceans?

11. Science in Public Policy. We live in an era when science and technology affect every aspect of life and society, and so must be included in well-informed public policy decisions.? How will you ensure that policy and regulatory decisions are fully informed by the best available scientific and technical information, and that the public is able to evaluate the basis of these policy decisions?

12. Space. The United States is currently in a major discussion over our national goals in space.? What should America?s space exploration and utilization goals be in the 21st century and what steps should the government take to help achieve them?

13. Critical Natural Resources. Supply shortages of natural resources affect economic growth, quality of life, and national security; for example, China currently produces 97% of rare earth elements needed for advanced electronics.?? What steps should the federal government take to ensure the quality and availability of critical natural resources?

14. Vaccination and Public Health. Vaccination campaigns against preventable diseases such as measles, polio and whooping cough depend on widespread participation to be effective, but in some communities vaccination rates have fallen off sharply. What actions would you support to enforce vaccinations in the interest of public health, and in what circumstances should exemptions be allowed?

RIVERSIDE: Rufus Wainwright, Blues Traveler top Fox music lineup ...

Posted on | July 19, 2012 | Comments

Rufus Wainwright has been announced as one of the artists playing the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside this fall. (AP PHOTO)

The Fox Performing Arts Center has announced its fall season for 2012 and a couple of shows for 2013 and we?re seeing some newer acts come through the area as well as some returning ones. Fielding has a story with the full lineup of entertainment, but I wanted to take minute and look at the music.

The biggest highlight of the season in my mind is Rufus Wainwright, who comes to the Fox on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Wainwright has played venues as diverse as Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. I think he is exactly the kind of artist who should play the Fox. He has a devoted following, his music will shine in a theater setting and I think the Fox?s sound system will serve him well.

His concert also has a shot at luring those out-of-towners that the city of Riverside touted the Fox would bring since Wainwright?s only remotely close date at this point is Tuesday, Oct. 9 in Santa Barbara.

Blues Traveler is playing the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside.

Another one of the highlights is a night I shall call ?Harmonica Fever.? In reality, the Fox is calling it ?A Big Night of Blues and Rock.? Headlining the show will be Fox newbie Blues Traveler, who will bring harmonicas and ?Run Around? Riverside on Thursday Sept. 20. They will be supported by Fox vets the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Riverside?s own Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers.

I think that bill is diverse enough to attract a mix of blues and rock fans. I wonder if you can bring your own harmonica in for this date.

Then, Three Dog Night is playing Friday, Sept. 28 and the group famous for hits like ?Joy to the World? and ?Mama Told Me Not to Come? will complete its trifecta of Northern I.E. theatres. They played both the Lewis Family Playhouse in Rancho Cucamonga and the California Theatre of the Performing Arts in San Bernardino in the past. The group also played the city of Beaumont?s July 4th celebration in 2011.

On Friday, Oct. 19, ?This is the ?60s? takes over. It?s being billed as ?A Live Multimedia Musical Experience.? That makes me think it may be along the lines of ?Rain? and Jason Bonham?s Led Zeppelin Experience.

We?ll continue to time travel when ?90s band Tonic plays Saturday, Nov. 3. The press release promises a special co-headliner for the show to be announced later, too. My first guess would be Blues Traveler, but they?re already on the bill. Has anyone seen Third Eye Blind around? What about Marcy Playground? They would be a good match. You know Tonic from the hit ?If You Could Only See? and the 2012 Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival.

On Friday, Nov. 9, we?ll get returning act America with openers the Little River Band. All that?s missing is Firefall.

On Sunday, Nov. 18, it?s a folk bonanza with Judy Collins and Roger McGuinn, of Byrds fame. Now?s a good time for a blog singalong break.

To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)

Moving on, we?re getting another show on Friday Nov. 30 that?s super secret right now because of contract negotiations, according to the Fox?s press release. We?ll get the announcement in early September, but it?s being billed as ?A Spectacular ?80s Rock Show.?

My guesses: Pat Benatar and/or The Go-Go?s. In my wildest dreams I want it to be Duran Duran. Who do you think it will be?

And we have two shows for the 2013 calendar, too. It?s classic rock-tastic.

Dennis DeYoung brings ?The Music of Styx Live in Concert? to the Fox on Friday, March 1. I have four words to say about this: ?Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto.?

Then, Foreigner, who has played everywhere from area casinos to Ontario?s Citizens Business Bank Arena, will perform on Saturday, April 20. Yes, that means I will get to write about ?Aqua Teen Hunger Force? and the Foreigner belt again.

Tickets for the shows will start to go on sale Friday, Aug. 3. You can pick them up at the Fox Box Office or on Ticketmaster.

So tell us, what do you think of the lineup? Are there any shows you want to see? Do you think it appeals to more audiences than previous seasons?

Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation Awards $5000 to ...

Keep Southeast Ohio Beautiful and the Lowe?s Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF) today announced a major gift in support of Keep Southeast Ohio Beautiful mission to engage individuals in local community improvement and environmental projects.

The Lowe?s/Keep America Beautiful Community Improvement Grant of $5,000 is one of 120 merit-based grants awarded nationally to support grassroots community improvement projects ranging from community gardens and tree plantings to litter and debris cleanups, recycling programs, park and playground restorations and beautification efforts.

Locally, the grant for $5,000 will provide funding for Rural Action?s Monday Creek Restoration Project, one of several partners that make up the Keep Southeast Ohio Beautiful collaborative. The grant will assist local residents and groups in projects that support the revitalization of New Straitsville?s Main Street. Three green spaces along Main Street will be improved. In the community garden, an edible and native plant rain garden will be installed to control stormwater runoff and provide an edible landscape for the community to utilize. Fruiting trees will be planted in the community park. At Robinson?s Cave, replacement of the crumbling footpath bridge will give a safe path across the stream to the cave and historical markers already on the site.

?We are happy to see one of the Keep Southeast Ohio Beautiful partners benefiting from one of the many grant opportunities offered by Keep America Beautiful,? said Gary Chancey, affiliate spokesperson.

Since joining the Keep Southeast Ohio Beautiful collaborative, the Monday Creek Restoration Project and the Appalachia Ohio Zero Waste Initiative, both programs of the Trimble, Ohio based Rural Action have been actively engaged in Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup (GAC) events. Together, the partnership strengthens our efforts to address illegal dumping, recycling and community greening initiatives.
The grant program is being supported by Lowe?s company-wide volunteerism effort, Lowe?s Heroes. This initiative offers Lowe?s employees the opportunity to work on a project in their own neighborhood, helping to make their communities better places to live, work and play.

?Keep America Beautiful is proud of the positive impact that Keep Southeast Ohio Beautiful project will have in the New Straitsville community,? said Keep America Beautiful President and CEO Matt McKenna. ?We are truly grateful to Lowe?s Charitable and Educational Foundation for its support and leadership that is being demonstrated in community sustainability.?

Alaska Town Elects Cat as Mayor Tourism Improves

cat-stubbs-mayor-1200.jpgPosted by Tina

A small town in Alaska decided a few years back that Stubbs the cat would do a better job as mayor than any of the other candidates. He won his post as a write-in candidate 15 years ago and has been mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska ever since. With a thousand friends on Facebook Mayor Stubbs is becoming quite the tourist attraction for this small Alaskan village at the foot of Mount McKinley and is said to have increased tourism and sales for local business. No word on his position on plastic bags.

Hmmm...a furry write in candidate or two might work wonders in the Chico City Council...any thoughts, citizens?
