Japan Increases Rhetoric Against South Korea

TOKYO ? Japan's top government officials and lawmakers are continuing to turn up the heat on two neighboring countries with claims on islands that Japan considers its own.

While calling on South Korea to respond to the territorial dispute in a wise and cautious manner, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's remarks at a Tokyo news conference Friday evening are likely to do little to ease rising diplomatic tensions with both Seoul and Beijing.

Noda tells reporters Japan will strengthen measures to secure its surrounding waters.

In a tough 10 minute opening statement, the Japanese prime minister asserted his country's territorial claims noting while it may be 61st in land size Japan's expansive maritime waters make it the world's sixth biggest sea power. When the depths of those waters are also taken into consideration, Noda asserts, Japan is number four.

Such boasts from a Japanese leader have been rare since the country's unconditional surrender in 1945. The defeat brought to an end the Pacific War and instantly eradicated Japan's half-century of brutal colonial expansionism.

Hours before Noda's news conference, South Korea lodged a formal diplomatic protest with Japan after both the prime minister and the foreign minister characterized South Korea's control of a disputed small island territory as an ?illegal occupation?

South Korea's protest calls ?unjustified? the Japanese claim to rocks nearly equidistant between the Korean peninsula and Japan's main island of Honshu.

Known internationally as the Liancourt Rocks, they cover a total area of less than one-fifth of a square kilometer. South Korea calls the territory Dokdo which the Japanese also claim them under the name of Takeshima.

South Korea's president has also raised Japanese emotions by using what the Japanese perceive as course language directed at Emperor Akihito.

Lee, earlier this month, said it would not be possible for the Japanese monarch to visit South Korea unless he offers a heartfelt apology for Japan's past colonization of the Korean peninsula. The South Korean president contended that a repeat of the Emperor's 1990 expression of ?deepest regrets? would not be adequate.

The escalation of domestic tensions is spilling into economic relations, as well.

Japanese finance minister Jun Azumi acknowledges the tensions are influencing decisions on whether Tokyo will extend a currency swap arrangement with Seoul as well as Japanese purchases of South Korean government debt.

In a symbolic but rare action, Japan's parliament Friday adopted resolutions calling South Korea's recent actions and a successful landing by Chinese activists on a Japanese-held island ?extremely regrettable.?

The Japan-China feud involves small islands in the East China Sea known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese.

In response to the landing by Hong Kong-based activists, the right-wing governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara, is requesting permission for the metropolitan government to sail to the islands. Past requests have been refused by the central government but Prime Minister Noda says no decision has yet been made on whether the Tokyo request will be granted.

Nuclear Decelerator: Last U.S. Particle Collider on Chopping Block

With the Tevatron in mothballs, the Brookhaven Laboratory collider now faces possible closure due to budget cutbacks

Until recently, the American particle collider was a thriving species spanning a variety of habitats from coast to coast. But now it finds itself on the endangered list.

Since 2008 the number of colliders in the U.S. has dwindled from four to one. And the last surviving member of the species, the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, N.Y., may soon fall victim to the same budgetary blight that has already felled so many other towering scientific facilities. Just last year the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) phased out the larger Tevatron collider at Fermilab in Illinois, citing fiscal constraints. The increasingly rare breed known as the collider is a particle accelerator in which two beams of high-energy particles intersect to collide head-on inside giant detectors, which allow physicists to sift through the wreckage for short-lived particles or evidence of new physical phenomena.

The RHIC collider is one of three major projects now under scrutiny as federal science agencies seek to reconcile their portfolios of physics facilities with tightening budgets. The DoE and the National Science Foundation have requested that a panel of nuclear physicists, chaired by Robert Tribble of Texas A&M University, advise the government on how to get the most science out of limited funds. It appears likely that at least one of the costly projects?either RHIC, the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Virginia or the planned Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) in Michigan?will fall victim to the cost-cutting. Any termination would cost hundreds of jobs and affect thousands of scientist users.

"The three of these things ? they can't all fit within the budgets that the DoE has been told to anticipate for the next five years or so," says Steven Vigdor, associate laboratory director for nuclear and particle physics at Brookhaven. "It's conceivable, but I think it's a long shot, that there's a compromise solution that doesn't involve terminating something."

The RHIC collider, with a staff of about 750, could provide the biggest target for cost-cutters. Its operation costs the DoE roughly $170 million annually. But RHIC is also the only facility of the three that is currently in operation, and it seems to be hitting its peak, having recently been upgraded. RHIC rams protons or heavy nuclei from gold, copper or uranium atoms together at nearly light speed to investigate what produces the proton's spin as well as the universe's composition in the earliest instants after the big bang. The high-speed collisions of heavy ions produce a nearly frictionless fluid called a quark?gluon plasma, a hot bouillabaisse of the fundamental particles that form the heart of all atoms. Quark?gluon plasma was first produced at RHIC in 2005, and scientists there are now working to explore at which temperatures the quarks and gluons freeze out from their fluid state into protons and neutrons.

Like the other two facilities, RHIC comes highly recommended by nuclear physics advisory groups. A 2012 report by the National Research Council identified the completed RHIC upgrade, and an ongoing upgrade at Jefferson Lab, as strategic investments whose exploitation "should be an essential component of the U.S. nuclear science program for the next decade."

The Tribble panel operates under the auspices of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC), which provides guidance to the federal funding agencies. Tribble's subcommittee will meet in Maryland over four days in early September, during which time representatives of the various facilities will have an opportunity to lobby for their projects. "We and the other laboratories are taking this really seriously in the sense of a threat to our continued operation, and for FRIB to their continued construction," Vigdor says.

Solar panels should last at least 25 years, but efficiency does decrease over time, so if you are paying extra for this feature, make sure you are not paying too much. Solar power is much cheaper to install now than it was even a few years ago.
• Evaporative cooler: If you live in a hot and dry or less humid area, such as the western United States or southern Australia, then consider installing an evaporative cooler instead of an air conditioner. Unlike the latter which uses ozone-depleting chemicals to cool a room, the former uses only water and air. Evaporative coolers also consume four times less electricity.
• Sustainable timber: Use only timber from sources that do not contribute to deforestation for your furniture needs. Avoid any wood that comes from rainforests or old growth forests.? Use bamboo and sustainable growth wood, instead. These grow very quickly to replace the ones that have been cut. You can also use reused wood to save costs and trees. To make sure that timber is from sustainable sources, look for the Forest?Stewardship?Council?logo. Of course, an existing house does not require any new timber, so may be considered more sustainable than building new, in that sense.
• Green Certification: To make sure that you will use only sustainable building products, look for green certification on products from environmental organizations such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), National Australian?Built?Environment?Rating?System (NABERS), Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM, UK), Haute Qualit? Environnementale (HQE, France) and Deutsche Gesellschaft f?r Nachhaltiges Bauen (DGNB, Germany).

Sandra is worried that her cat Chia might have diabetes. Over the past month or so, she has noticed Chia at the water bowl with ever-increasing frequency, and the results of the water intake in his litter box. Having done research on the Internet, Sandra picked diabetes as the likely diagnosis for Chia's increased thirst.

Increased thirst when associated with increased urination is indeed a hallmark symptom for diabetes mellitus in cats, and dogs. But diabetes is not the only possible cause. In cats, renal disease also is a common cause of these symptoms. I want to emphasize that cats do not drink for fun or enjoyment. If there is an increase in water intake, there is an underlying reason. Chia will need to visit his veterinarian for a blood panel, urinalysis and a spot check of his blood sugar level. With these results, we can determine if he is a diabetic or if he has renal disease. While diabetes is manageable with insulin therapy, renal disease is managed in an entirely different way, depending on the extent of the disease at the time of diagnosis. Realize, of course, these are not the only possible causes for Chia's symptoms. They are, however, the two most likely possibilities. Let's assume Sandra is correct and Chia has diabetes. Blood work will show an elevated sugar level because Chia does not have enough insulin in his body to drive sugar in his blood into his cells, where it is used as an energy source. As the blood sugar elevates, it increases what is known as the oncotic pressure within the blood. This increased oncotic pressure is perceived by the brain and the brain tells the cat to drink more water, in essence trying to dilute the blood. This increased fluid within the blood is then filtered by the kidneys, which produce excess urine as a result. Treatment for diabetes involves the use of insulin to replace the lack of it from the pancreas. There are cases of diabetes that occur in hugely obese cats that can be controlled long term without insulin as long as the weight problem is addressed. Most cases, however, require insulin therapy. Insulin is given by injection, usually twice daily. This can be daunting for some caretakers. But with proper demonstration in technique, it can be quite simple. In fact, for the vast majority of people with diabetic pets I have dealt with over the years, insulin injections have become as routine as feeding their pets. Early in the course of therapy, we like to monitor the patient's response to the insulin by checking blood sugar values throughout the day. This will allow fine tuning of the dosing to fit the individual patient. I have many caretakers who even learn to check their cat's blood sugar. There are cats that will not allow insulin treatment and, as a result, successful treatment becomes unlikely. These cats face a grave prognosis. If Chia is diabetic and is amenable to insulin therapy, he'll have a good quality of life. (Jeff Kahler is a veterinarian in Modesto, Calif. Bipolar disorder and creativity are linked (but ... - Mental Health Hub

Does some fine madness yield great artists, writers, and scientists? The evidence is growing for a significant link between bipolar disorder and creative temperament and achievement.

People with bipolar disorder swing repeatedly from depression to euphoria and hyperactivity, or intensely irritable mood states. Sometimes likened to being on an emotional rollercoaster, each swing up then down affects one?s behaviour, energy levels, thought patterns and sleep.

Also known as manic-depressive illness, bipolar disorder is strongly genetically linked, passing down through each generation of an affected family. It is fairly common and very treatable with modern medicines and psychotherapy.

A seminal work in the field is Kay Redfield Jamison?s 1993 book Touched with Fire: Manic-depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament. The American psychologist combined current diagnostic criteria with biographical data, diaries, family trees and other historical information, to closely examine the lives of a sample of major 18th century British poets born between the years 1705 and 1805.

Jamison found a rate of bipolar disorder 30 times greater in these poets than is present in the general population. Jamison?s work also found that the periods psychiatrists call hypomania ? mild but not full-blown mania ? can also involve heightened creative thinking and expansiveness, high mental speed, cognitive flexibility, and ability to make original connections between otherwise disparate ideas, all elements underlying creativity.

Other studies by Jamison ? as published here and here ? established that a number of speech components occur in individuals when hypomanic: they are more likely to use alliteration, to rhyme, to use idiosyncratic words, and engage in a playful use of language.

When given drills, they can list synonyms or form word associations more rapidly than control groups. And so they rate highly on tests of creativity. Jamison?s 1989 study of 47 eminent British writers and artists ? selected on the basis of their having won at least one of several major prestigious prizes or awards in their fields ? found 38% of this group had been treated for a mood disorder, a category that includes depression as well as bipolar disorder.

Playing by numbers

Recent, large-scale studies provide additional scientific support to Jamison?s work. A whole-population cohort study of all individuals in the Swedish national school register showed that those who demonstrated excellent school performances were nearly four times as likely to develop bipolar disorder as those who exhibited only average performance.

Excellence in language or music was particularly correlated with an increased risk for developing bipolar disorder. Other recent large-scale studies have addressed a different pattern of association ? one between creative occupation and mental illness.

These studies found a clear over-representation of people with bipolar disorder (and their healthy siblings) in the most creative occupational categories, which included artists, musicians, writers and scientists.

Hypomanic moods

While large, population-based studies provide us with the scientific rigour to test the link between bipolar disorder and creativity, some of the more interesting studies have involved smaller-scale, reflexive approaches.

Here, writers and artists with personal experience of bipolar disorder have reflected on their own and their peers? creative processes, exploring how their mood states interact with their productivity.

In 2010, Stephanie Stone Horton reflexively traced her own and her colleagues? writing creativity and dysfunction as early career writers with bipolar disorder or depression.

Horton described how hypomanic moods often facilitate writing periods characterised by fluency, flair and persuasive power, whereas the periods of mild depression or euthymia (even moods between the extremes) may be better used for the editing and proofing.

Olivia Sagan explored the experiences of mentally ill, developing artists through longitudinal biographical interviews conducted with art students at two university sites.

Narratives involved complex stories in which participants considered their illness to be part of themselves, albeit one that they needed to ?manage?.

One of the details of the narratives was the hypervigilance of health and ill-health on a continuum which at times threatened to jeopardise the dearly won achievement of becoming an art student. Here, participants often talked about the potentially productive, but also potentially destabalising, role of hypomanic moods.

Drop the ?mad genius? tag

Let?s be clear. To argue for a link between bipolar disorder and creative achievement is not to argue that all, or even most, artists and writers automatically have a mental illness: indeed, most do not. To make such simplistic generalisations can reinforce the idea of the ?mad genius? and trivialise a serious medical condition that can end in suicide.

Yet the evidence to date suggests that a high number of artists and writers, far more than could be expected by chance, meet the diagnostic criteria for bipolar disorder.

What are the implications for treatment? First line medication for bipolar disorder, lithium, can cause cognitive dulling and slowing, and limit emotional and perceptual range for some individuals. This is especially significant for those working in creative fields such as artists and writers, who draw on their emotions for creating their work.

It is not surprising then that some artists and writers with bipolar disorder choose not to take medications. But unless an individual has a mild expression of bipolar disorder, the consequences of the condition (suicide, for example) nearly always argue for active treatment.

More research is need to understand not only how mood experiences interact with creative processes and artistic production, but to learn how mood episodes shape decisions about whether or not to accept treatment and if so, the treatment choices.

We also need to learn more about how people with bipolar disorder can best be supported to make the most of their lives, with the highest degree of satisfaction in their achievements.

Society benefits from the achievements of its talented writers, artists, and scientists with mental illness, yet those affected don?t always judge their moments of brilliance to be worth the accompanying pain and distress, and don?t always place their personal wellbeing and adherence to taking medication ahead of the potential to express their creativity.

Japan hints at economic action in South Korea island feud

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan said on Tuesday it was considering taking measures beyond diplomatic action in its feud with South Korea over a group of disputed islands, suggesting Tokyo may take the unusual step of extending the stand-off into the economic arena.

Finance Minister Jun Azumi suggested last Friday that Japan could roll back an emergency currency swap arrangement agreed last year and expiring in October.

Japanese media has also speculated that Tokyo could abort a plan to buy South Korean government bonds, a step agreed as part of financial and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Japan's cabinet on Tuesday held a meeting to discuss a response to what Japan considered a provocative visit of South Korea's president to disputed islands earlier this month.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura said Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told his cabinet to consider additional measures to deal with the conflict, beyond usual diplomatic channels.

"Prime Minister Noda instructed ministers to prepare peaceful solution in accordance with an international law, strengthen information policy ... and consider possible additional measures," Fujimura told reporters.

Azumi would not comment on the swap deal on Tuesday and other ministers said the issue was not even discussed.

The islands, known as Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima in Japan, lie equidistant from the two mainlands and are believed to contain frozen natural gas deposits potentially worth billions of dollars.

Japan recalled its ambassador to South Korea after Lee became the first South Korean leader to set foot on the islands.

Azumi last week called off his trip to Seoul scheduled for this week and the government postponed two other ministerial-level meetings between the two countries originally planned for the end of the month.

Tokyo has said it will take the long-running islands territorial dispute to the International Court of Justice.

But it would be unusual for Japan to play the economic card in disputes with its neighbors.

"They are talking about it but I am not sure they will carry through the threats. Talk is cheap," said Koichi Nakano, Sophia University professor and political commentator.

Japan's ruling Democrats, under voter pressure and likely to lose the next election, seemed to have over reacted to media criticism that they were too soft in disputes with Japan's neighbors, said Nakano.

The spat with South Korea coincides with a stand-off between Japan and China over another island chain, which sparked major anti-Japanese protests in China last week.

Tokyo has stressed the dispute with Beijing over the islands, known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China, should not hurt ties between Asia's two biggest economies.

Despite ever-closer economic ties, memories of Japanese militarism run deep in China and South Korea and overlap with present day rivalry over markets, economic and diplomatic influence and natural resources.

27 percent of S. African miners return to work

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? A spokeswoman for Lonmin's PR company says that only some 27 percent of workers returned to work Monday morning despite a warning that those on strike would face dismissal. Police shot dead dozens of striking miners near the Lonmin platinum mine in South Africa last week.

Sue Vey, spokeswoman for the Lonmin PR company Inzalo, said on Monday its unknown how many of the returning workers had taken part in the strike that began on Aug. 10.

Lonmin says 3,000 of its rock drill operations must to return to work or face dismissal. The company also urged its other 25,000 workers and 10,000 contractors, who have been away due to the violence, to return.

On Monday morning, Lonmin shares were down some 4 percent.

For two days in Wilmington, an event called "Brides Against Breast Cancer" showed off thousands of designer gowns sold at half-price.

It sold 13 dresses in total, and all the proceeds go to support breast cancer patients and their families.

Brides said it's a disease that touches everyone's life.

"I think almost everyone you know, knows someone. So, it's definitely a cause everyone needs to continue to fight for," said bride Diandre Decaro.

Brides Against Breast Cancer holds its next sale in Raleigh, September 19, 20 and 21.

Saturday Sports Wrap: Rams win Governor's Cup; St. Louis and KC pick up baseball wins

St. Louis, Mo.- The annual braggin' rights NFL pre-season game between Missouri's two NFL teams known as the "Governor's Cup" went to the Rams on Saturday night.? Sam Bradfor's 21 yard pass to Lance Kendricks capped an 80-yard opening drive for St. Louis, and the Rams never trailed from there in a 31-17 victory.

The Chiefs first possession ended with receiver Jonthan Baldwin fumbling after a catch at his own 31, leading to another Bradford TD toss that made it 14-0.

Kansas City finally got its first score in the second quarter when Payton Hillis went over from a yard out to cap an 80-yard drive.? Springfield, MO- The Corpus Christi Hooks erupted in offensive bunches against the Cardinals for a 12-4 victory.

In the top of the first inning, the Hooks got off to a fast start as Jon Singleton hit a two-run home run to left field.

The Cardinals answered in the bottom of the inning. Oscar Taveras grounded into a fielder's choice scoring Kolten Wong from third base. Xavier Scruggs added a two-run home run to give Springfield a 3-2 lead after one inning.

The lead didn't last.

Corpus Christi scored six runs off starter Scott McGregor in the second inning. The inning started with three straight runners reaching base on one walk and two singles. Hooks starter Matt Heidenreich then hit a sacrifice fly to left field for the first run and out.

Another run scored as McGregor hit Andy Simunic with the bases loaded. Singleton then came up and hit a ball to first base. Scruggs fielded it and looked to second, but threw back to first. However, McGregor wasn't covering first and two runs scored on an error.

A batter later, Jake Goebbert hit an RBI groundout to second for the Hooks' fifth run. Bobby Borchering then singled in the sixth and final run of the inning.

McGregor (5-2) lasted only an inning and two-thirds in the game. The start was his shortest on the season. The righty allowed eight runs, five earned, on only four hits. He also allowed three walks and a hit batsman. This is the second start in a row against the Hooks that McGregor has given up five earned runs. He pitched against them in Corpus Christi during his previous start on Aug. 12.

Four more runs came across the plate for the Hooks in the top of the sixth. Jacob Goebbert singled in a run for his second RBI of the game. The next batter, Austin Wates, hit a three-run home run, putting Corpus Christi up 12-3. The four runs were split evenly off Springfield relievers Chase Reid and Kevin Thomas.

Heidenreich (2-1) pitched sixth innings for Corpus Christi. He allowed three unearned runs on six hits and three strikeouts. He battled in and out of trouble all night long. The second was the only inning he allowed a base runner.

In the bottom of the eighth, Springfield added a run to cut the deficit to eight runs. Taveras hit an RBI double to center field scoring Wong from second base.

Springfield will continue their three-game series with the Corpus Christi Hooks tomorrow night at 6:08pm. The Cardinals will have Richard Castillo on the mound against Paul Clemens of the Hooks.

Lufthansa, Fraport sue union over February strikes

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - German airline Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) and airport operator Fraport (FRAG.DE) are suing German trade union GdF over a series of strikes by airfield workers at Frankfurt airport in February, the companies said on Sunday.

The strikes by apron staff, who guide planes in and out of parking positions at the airport, resulted in the cancellation of around 1,800 flights, costing Lufthansa tens of millions of euros in lost revenue and leading Fraport to cut its guidance for passenger number growth.

The two companies said they had filed a complaint with a court in Frankfurt last week, but declined to give the amount of damages being demanded.

German magazine Spiegel, which said the German air traffic controllers' authority DFS and airlines Air Berlin (AB1.DE) and Condor (TCG.L) had also filed complaints, said the total amount being demanded in compensation was 10 million euros ($12.3 million).

Condor, DFS and Air Berlin were not immediately available for comment.

The legal action comes after Lufthansa, Air Berlin and Ryanair (RYA.I) failed last week in a bid to claim 3.3 million euros from the GdF, which mostly represents air traffic control staff, over threatened strikes by tower staff last summer.

Margolis Named Sr Managing Director of NGKF Capital Group

Newmark Grubb Knight Frank's Capital Group appointed Michael Margolis, CPA as a senior managing director in its Philadelphia office. Margolis has 30 years of experience in the institutional market with owners in the Philadelphia and surrounding areas. His client list included names like BPG Properties, Liberty Property Trust, Brandywine Realty Trust and many other top firms.

He previously worked at Grubb & Ellis and also served as president of investment sales with Professional Realty Advisors for the past four years. Before that Margolis held the office of director of acquisitions at Patriot Equities.

HFF Hires Thomas

Jeffrey Thomas will lead the net-lease investment team at HFF as senior managing director in Orange County. In this position, he will grow the net-lease investment sales platform nationally.

Thomas has more than 15 years of experience in commercial real estate. Prior to taking his new position, he worked as senior vice president at CBRE, focusing on net lease sales. He also worked as senior product manager at Loopnet.com.

Hanrahan Joins Wood Partners as SVP of Asset Mgmt

Wood Partners tapped 25-year industry veteran Robert Hanrahan as senior vice president of asset management to help oversee the firm's growing multifamily portfolio.

Based in the firm's Atlanta office, Hanrahan will develop business strategy for Wood?s portfolio, supervise and train asset managers, and take a lead role in communication with investors across the portfolio.

Prior to joining Wood Partners, he was the vice president of RREEF?s asset management team overseeing 17 multifamily and mixed-use properties valued at approximately $1 billion. He also managed portfolios for Colonial Properties, The Habitat Company, Tishman Midwest, and FiField Cos.

Toming Joins HFF Austin Office

Rhonda Toming joined HFF in Austin as a managing director. Toming will manage primarily office and industrial investment sales for HFF in the central Texas.

She has nearly three decades of commercial real estate experience. Toming's experience includes all types of financial and investment sales brokerage. She previously at worked as an investment sales broker at Oxford Commercial and Fischer Financial.

Presti Promoted at Forest City

Forest City Enterprises, the Cleveland-based owner, developer and manager of real estate, promoted Geralyn Presti to executive vice president, general counsel and secretary. Since 2002, Presti has been the general counsel for the company.

A recipient of numerous awards, she has been elected to the Society of Benchers by the board of the CWRU Law School as well as selected as a 2007 Rainmaker by the Northern Ohio Live magazine.

Presti received her bachelor's degree from The Ohio University and a joint Master of Social Science Administration and Juris Doctor from Case Western University.

Harmar Thompson joined LCOR as the senior vice president of development. He will be based in the real estate investment, development and management firm's Bethesda, MD, office.

Thompson will pursue new opportunities in both multifamily and commercial areas. He has more than 15 years of experience in the commercial real estate industry directing acquisitions, development and asset management activities across the East Coast. Thompson was previously at Lowe Enterprise Real Estate Group, where he was responsible for directing the strategy and implementation of the East Coast portfolio.

Podolsky Northstar Names 3 New Principals

Podolsky Northstar CORFAC International named three new principals to the firm: (pictured from left to right) Steven Tick, SIOR, Melissa Podolsky, RPA and Adam Tarantur.

Tick has more than 25 years of experience in the brokerage and redevelopment industry. He joined Podolsky Northstar in 1995, and previously served as senior vice president in the brokerage division. Tick is also a member of Society of Industrial and Office Realtors and the Association of Industrial Real Estate Brokers.

Melissa Podolsky joined the team at Podolsky Northstar in 2004. She served as senior vice president of the property management team. Podolsky is also a licensed Illinois real estate broker, assisting with tenant representation brokerage assignments and tenant renewals.

Tarantur joined the firm in 2005 after graduating from the University of Wisconsin - Madison School of Business in Real Estate & Urban Land Economics. During his six years at the firm, he has become a senior vice president of the company's brokerage division and member of the company's board.

Studley Promotes 3 in Strategic Portfolio Solutions Group

Studley promoted (pictured from left to right) Kelly Evans, Ryan Rawls and Sheena Stone in its strategic portfolio solutions group in Atlanta.

Evans, a certified project management professional, was named managing director. Previously a director, Evans leads and manages a 5 million square-foot portfolio on the company?s SPS Business Intelligence Portal, which shows a graphical view of client portfolios.

Rawls, a CPA, was promoted from assistant director to director. With a finance background, Rawls provides financial analysis, transaction management and strategic consulting to his clients.

Stone was promoted from manager of business development to director of business development. Stone manages the marketing as well as secures some of the accounts for the SPS group. An active CoreNet Global member, she has experience in corporate real estate proposal, presentation and message development.

Bertovich Joins Premier Development Partners

Premier specializes in commercial real estate development, interior and exterior construction, site and building infrastructure and asset value creation.

Pilchick Joins Eastern Union CRE

Avi Pilchick has joined Eastern Union Commercial Real Estate, one of America?s highest-transacting, privately-owned mortgage companies, as its chief operating officer in New York City.

Pilchick?s role at Eastern Union will be to strengthen corporate influences, policies, and procedures; and to make sure that brokers have the information, tools, and staff needed to complete their jobs.

Pilchick was previously a senior executive with a Pennsylvania-based real estate vendor, building out and running the customer service division. Under Pilchick the company expanded and was ultimately sold to a venture capital firm.
